Joe is also known as a Monk Parakeet. He is a species of parrot which originates from the temperate to subtropical areas of Argentina and the surrounding countries in South America.
Joe, like all Quaker Parrots, is a highly intelligent, social bird. Those kept as pets routinely develop large vocabularies. They are able to learn scores of words and phrases. Due to this early speaking ability, the Quaker Parrot is overtaking the cockatiel as the favorite bird to teach to talk.
A quaker parrot's diet should ideally consist of a basic food mix of equal parts of a good seed mix and a high-quality pellet food.
Also essential to good nutritional health is a daily fresh supply of vegetables, such as lettuce; grated carrot is a favorite among many birds and a quaker parrot is no exception. Fresh or dried fruits are also a good idea, stay away from fruits with artificial colors added as these can build up in their system and cause problems later. Joe loves carrot, apples and dried fruit.
If you find an injured or sick native animal please contact your local wildlife rescue group. These volunteers are trained to care for native species.
