Joe Reihsen at THE HOLE and Brianna Bass at LATCHKEY GALLERY
Ойын-сауық
James Kalm was slipping and sliding around Tribeca and the bottom of the Lower East Side when he noticed a couple of synergistic exhibitions that deal with the idea of contemporary abstraction. “Zombie Figuration” has subsumed much of the recent art conversation, and pushed a lot of commercial discourse towards a totalitarian submission. Eccentric Abstraction, hopefully, seems to be staking a claim on parts of our current aesthetic. Joe Reihsen with “Microclimates” presents a series of works playing off the “natural” versus the “intentional.” Laying chunky oil paint parts over stained and poured acrylic, the artist metaphorically, portrays the tension between intent and nature.
Brianna Bass in this exhibition titled “Scattering the Constant” shows a series of paintings derived from a mathematical and coloristic system. However, despite the scientific rigor of the system, glitches, and tweaks, make the work of the human hand obvious. This program was recorded September 21, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Glad you were able to make it back!
Thank you Kate!!!!
Nice to see you are making new videos James, I am catching up with all your old vids too! Your channel has opened up my senses to the work going on in New York, notice there are a lot of galleries in New York much more than here in Melbourne...you are so lucky. Keep up the great work James, becoming a big fan of your channel and not to forget.... thank you Kate!!!
really enjoyed the Reihsen works - so nice to see natural history paintings getting some attention. Thank you Kate!
I enjoy both. I loved the rust colors of Reihsen, very autumnal.
Thank you Kate! ❤
Yes , more paw prints please! 🎥❤❤
First painter reminds me a lot of Jean Arp and Schwitters; Brianna's work astounds me. I imagine Albers would enjoy it.

Yep. Brianna is a Yalie. I came out a bit before her. Anoka Faruqee was one of her professors.
A glutt to say the least !!!!! Thanks Kate !!
Thank you for coming! Love how you carry the gaze around the work. Looking forward to seeing Joe’s show in person this week!

Congrats on the show. Like I said in the vid, I popped in at your show last year(?) and noted that the work is very intreaguing, and I'll have to keep an eye on it. Good Luck and thanks for your comments...JK
Very controlled style for both artists, uni-directional compositions. My God who would spend the time and patience for the second set of art.
Another great visit to two galleries. Your knowledge always makes me look up artists and learn more about the art scene in NYC. Thank you and Kate.
Brianna Bass reminds me of Carlos Cruz-Diez, maybe because I was looking at his work in the local MFA yesterday.
Trudy Benson and your 1st report of Her work is in my top 10 Kalm Reports ......of all time.
I've been enjoying these video's for several years; never complained before, but I find the camera-work in this one a little...unsettling/jarring. I really like Joe's work.
Thanks for the video! Bass's work is also reminiscent of Richard Paul Lohse - a Swiss artist.

I just did a quick google search of Richard Paul Lohse. He looks to be part of the great Swiss abstract/graphic design school that Max Bill is part of...(?)...JK

I like the back-and-forth we get from something like a digital subject but rendered lovingly by hand. My computer screen is having fun with these paintings, too!@@jameskalm

cool man. so excellent!
Thanks Kate!
Hey J.K, a passing thought ....have you seen any special-beautiful-handmade work in the abstract space. Maybe that has something to do with it too. Namaste Kate !
Riehsen’s Art reminds me of minimalist Nicolas de Stael and Brian Rutenberg, with background of Julian Schnabel. Bass’ work is definitely Albers with Giza pyramids…
after all that work, did they put Brianna Bass in a straight jacket and wisk her off to a mental institution?!

Some artists find this kind of slow, systematic painting very meditative...Just sayin'...JK
