Charline von Heyl at PETZEL
Ойын-сауық
James Kalm, despite his best laid plans, and intentions, still has to compete with “real life”. Setting off with the notion of taking a leisurely Saturday afternoon tour through the latest Charline von Heyl exhibition, Kalm heads out from his Red Hook studio. But before your correspondent can even get across the East River, he’s informed by a platoon of New York City Police Department officers that the Brooklyn Bridge is the scene of rowdy protests. Your reporter turns back, and makes a time-consuming detour across the Manhattan Bridge. Thus, by the time he gets to Chelsea, he’s left with a mere twenty minutes to explore the von Heyl show. Von Heyl has been receiving substantial critical attention recently for her spontaneous brushwork, eclectic techniques, and whimsical approach to abstraction. Hidden within what might appear as the facile, are historic and contemporary references to influential works, and trends, that bind the artist to the rich legacy of New York painting, and the German Trans-Avantgarde. This program was recorded October 28, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Thank You Kate !!
So great to see your review of this show which has been popping up all over my Instagram feed - seems like this was certainly one of the *must see* show of the season. I partially can see the Philip Taaffe influence, but the strongest comparison I could see was to part of Sigmar Pölke's work. Her linear works and louder color palettes remind me a bit of George Condo. The intentional combining of jarring elements also evokes a bit of Albert Oehlen. Nice, diverse show, and the big salon-style wall at 13:45 really got me palpitating. Thanks James, thanks Kate!
Thank you Kate
Thank you Kate. Thank you James . Hi from St. Pete.
Thank you Kate! ❤
Thanks Kate.
Greetings from Mark in London England. Enjoyed this show a lot, thanks for bringing it to us.
I was also thinking of Pousette Dart on that first piece! All this work is very strong. Nice show.
Fantastic work

Thank you! For us overseas is important to see whats happening in NY.
BLUE GUITAR...is beautiful
Brilliant work.
Looks like the show could a have used some editing. Maybe a bit too derivative with no clear voice.

Tons of experimentation into different styles and techniques tends to appear diversely derivative. But she does have voice all of her own in some pieces. 👍😊

@@sublimeister9630 I totally agree. Some of the work looks amazing.
Made me think more of Harold Gilman than Taaffe when I saw the patterning
Like this show and the music is cool too
The black and white flower work looks like a Wool screen print

They’re married. I wouldn’t be surprised if he influenced that work.
Really love her creations...Mattise, cut paper period; end of life
Wallace Stevens or Picasso, the corner, a corner, Matisse spece.
Thanks for the work you do! Maybe about time for an exit of New York?

@@jameskalm 😅 A true New Yorker.
It looks like a lot of homage to American & European Art and a working out of Ideas. I wonder how much scale plays into the contemporary New York Scene? "thank ya Kate."
interesting varied show. more enjoyable than schutz's (in my opinion)
