Joe Morgan held a grudge for 35 years as recalled by Hal McCoy

Hal McCoy is synonymous with the Cincinnati Reds. The Hall of Fame baseball writer for the Dayton Daily News has been covering baseball’s oldest professional franchise since 1973. In this clip, Hal explains why Hall of Famer Joe Morgan quit talking to him, and how the two didn't speak for 35 years!

I met Joe in an airport when I was travelling with my 8 year old son. This was 17 years ago. He was on his cell phone and saw me lingering about 15 feet away. He nodded to me and called us over when he got off of his call. He was super nice and autographed a card of his HOF plaque for my son. He signed it to him, my kid had no idea who he was. It is still on the desk in my son's room.

Spec Richardson was the Astros General Manager in the early 1970s. He ruined the Astros by making several idiot trades. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eXaFl66jeLqziLA.html the youtube link is a miller lite beer commercial with Spec and Al Rosen

What's worse is Griffey Sr didn't leave the Reds until after the 81 season , along with Foster. So, his memory isn't what it used to be. Gullett left in FA , Perez traded , Nolan cut? after 76. Billingham traded after 77. Rose left after 78. Morgan and Geronimo left after 79. Foster and Griffey leave after 81 season.

Thanks for sharing this story. Been a Reds fan for 60+ years and didn’t realize this happened between Hal and Joe. Joe Morgan, in my opinion is very underrated based on his on-field achievements. He clearly ranks among the best 2nd basemen of all time. But just using my sports card and sports memorabilia interest as a measure, he seems to be less popular. The Reds had some unbelievable stars and a stretch of greatness in the 70’s and I always viewed Morgan as the guy that triggered their run.

I can relate to Joe, but he's better than I am. Once I write you off as a person, that's it, and if I have to do that, you did/said something egregious, that I no longer respect you as a person. Maybe one day, I can/will be like Joe, and mend the fence, but I doubt it...😄

writers can write, but a Ball Player only has ONE CAREER and its usually short. Joe Morgan has to play the game totally as the game is played before him. Joe has no excuses for Balls & Strikes. But a writer can bitch all he or she wants according to the game. That's the FANS PEROGATIVE. Joe though can't take back a bad call, or a run. So when a writer complains about a Player, he or she writer can retrack their observations. But a Player can't. Go ask the Boston Red Sox first baseman when he flubbed a grounder and NY Yankees players scored stealing the game.
