Joe is not a hater, this new NFL is soft can’t touch the QB or receivers now a days.Marino had 48 TD’s and 5000 yards passing. That record stood for over 20 years. No accident that when the game changed (don’t touch Brady) the records all fell. Don’t believe me just watch the old games and watch the games now. You can’t argue facts.

Once Brady went past 4 SBs, Montana started measuring greatness differently, all of a sudden he talks about Marino and what he " would have done today" blah blah blah, You will never know, it can't happen. One thing for sure is Brady has 7 SBs and alot of records, including longevity. He played one SB with 18 stitches in his throwing hand, on his palm. No one ever mentions that, Won 7 but went to 10!! ridiculous. We all know who the GOAT and his name starts with BRADY.

Actually Joe Montana did nothing to stop Marino from winning that game. What stopped Marino was the utterly crappy team he played on... which could not run the ball... could not run block or pass block... and could not play even one facet of the defensive game to even a mediocre level. Go back and watch the game... on the first two Miami possessions, their 2nd year QB went through the all-time best SF defense like a knife thru hot butter for a TD and a FG. By their third possession, coaching genius Bill Walsh went to 3 down lineman (who still got a ridiculous pass rush) a linebacker and seven db's (four of whom were All-Pro including Ronnie Lott). He dared Miami to run the ball. They tried... they couldn't. The double teaming db's mugged Clayton and Duper and the TE's for the rest of the game... in a form of play which in today's game would have been called pass interference on every single play. Most unfair NFL fight I have ever witnessed. But Montana did not coach or play defense. Marino was the greatest QB of all-time and its not even close.

Marino has held and still holds so many passing records. The release he had was amazing. Lineman would be bearing down on him or have him in their grasp and tackle him. Only to be on the ground with him and he’s looking down field at the receiver who just caught the ball or scored. From two hands on the ball at his chest, to up and gone in a split second. And often it was a frozen rope pass. Several receivers said you caught the ball in self defense. If you didn’t, it was like getting punched or you might break a finger. Marino came out of college with two flat tires (bum knees), that’s why he fell in the draft. He was selected to many pro bowl teams but opted out because he needed the time to heal up from tune up surgery on his knees. The defense suffered because he could score so quickly, that they didn’t get much time to rest. Joe wasn’t half bad either though.

Totally true I’m a Browns fan and grew up during the era of Marino/Elway/Kelly/ and Montana. If you think about it, with the way the NFL rules are now favoring offense. There was no leniency like that back when Marino played . I remember they implemented the five yard chuck rule sometime in the 80’s. That means you could bump and basically chuck a receiver all the way down the field. Not to mention the hits that were legal back then. All I’m saying is if Marino played now with the rules and offenses in place now because of his accurate cannon he’d break every record in my opinion. That guy made me sick every time the Browns played the Dolphins…..”laces out”

The title is wrong. Joe Montana didn't call Marino the best QB in NFL history. He called him one of the best that didn't get his due.

I totally agree. What an honor though coming from Joe Montana. I was a Marino/Dolphins fan and I never saw a quarterback hold a team up like Dan Marino, keeping weak teams in first place. But as for Joe Montana, he was cool and he closed on the deal every time.

Maybe a lot of what influenced Joe to say this was the 1985 season. The Bears were steamrolling everybody, especially defensively, including the 49ers.. Joe probably saw the Monday night game in which Marino gunned down the legendary 1985 Bears defense which was something he had not been able to do.
