At 1st I thought I had wrote the thread starter because I've said the exact same thing many times. When I get in the qb debate I always ask the person to name me a super star or HOF offensive playmaker that Marino had. Duper was a speedster & Clayton a good all around wr who was a very good route runner but Marino made them. He had a past his prime Irving Fryer & a great possession reciever in OJ McDuffie but that's about it. Put Marino on that Niners team with HOF'ers all over the offensive & defensive side of the ball. Same thing with Jim Kelly in Buffalo & Peyton in Indy.

Dan never gets mentioned in the Goat discussion because he proves that the QB Super Bowl stat is bull. You have 11 guys on both sides of the ball, plus special teams, and he doesn’t control all of it. He didn’t pick his coaches, receivers, or defenses, and despite having no running game, average to bad D’s, nearly absent RB’s, he still retired with every single record. And the Dolphins haven’t sniffed a Super Bowl since he lost in 85. He proves it’s not all one position, which contradicts the narrative. If you want to win, you better have a great coach, and a top ten D, otherwise, you’ll end up like Dan Marino.

I met Bill Walsh in 2000 and I asked him who was the best QB ever. I fully expected him to say Joe Montana (for obvious reasons) and I was ready to debate him. He really didn't want to answer the question at all. But I said certain names He would say no. I finally said Dan Marino and he smiled and replied "smart man". Even he thought Marino was the best Qb he'd ever seen and that says a lot!

Forward passer is a good way to describe it though I like to call it downfield passing because it better incorporates the deep ball aspect. Dan had the best deep ball in the history of professional football. His ball placement, touch, distance, and velocity in one package were unmatched. No one had all those traits in one arm. Rodgers is right up there though.

If I could pick one player from the entire history of the NFL to start a franchise with, it would be Dan Marino. He not only had an insanely strong arm and threw with accuracy, he could also throw with touch, could pick apart the best defenses (see Marino beating the 1985 Bears), had insane vision of the entire field, and despite being a slow runner he was so quick to feel presser and avoid a sack like no other. - IMHO, Marino was the best quarterback in the history of the NFL.

That year he just blew away all that came before. He was not the greatest QB ever, but he was the greatest passer ever.

No QB ever came into the League with a better chance of success than Marino in '83 with the Dolphins. He was drafted by a team that had just played in the S.B., they were No.1 on Defense for Least Points Allowed, his backs had 2,150 yds. rushing, his Coach was the best in the League at the time, and as we now know, he was in the start of his prime. It could not have been any better.

He had 10 teams where his backs had OVER 2,500 yds. rushing and receiving ('83,'84,'85,'86,'87,'92,'93,'94,'95,'96) . Plenty of GOOD teams.

He finished his career with what 2nd most game winning drives and 4th quarter comebacks? I assume you’re talking about playoff success. You realize he normally drug average teams to the playoffs and played much better teams. I mean look at those Bills teams he was facing in the 90s. Those guys were much better than the dolphins. And not the mention the NFC teams he would have faced in the Super Bowl. The 9ers team he faced was just great. First team to ever go 15-1. And it’s joe Montana. It’s much easier to key into a one dimensional team. As the dolphins were. I watched them try to run the ball and many times lose the game on fumbles. Marinos best teams were his first two years. Then they finally started to get a good d in the 90s and ran into the Bills.
