Sorry, but Donny is right here. There's no worthy excuse for lashing out like that Joe. Additionally, I understand the argument Joe was trying to make because I lived that world in a Florida university. However, Donny makes a good point here that shouldn't be shouted down: sometimes people are just jerks.

suryavajra Let me be clear here. I am by no means a conservative but in government classes, I saw conservative students slowling disengaging over time because their input was consistently met with criticism. The sad part is that in a university setting, being able to articulate yourself, both verbally and in writing, is of prime value. When conservative students feel like they aren't going to be heard, they disengage. The flip side here is that prestigious, quality universities should challenge you in a public setting. If you spout out nonsense, don't expect it to go without criticism, sometimes constructive and sometimes not.

Sure....it's a tough position to be in. I mean I went to colleges in California and Indiana. I mean I experienced something just a bit different, a lot of my government classes had such little to do with partisan politics and political positions in American politics, that I'd see liberal and conservative students totally frustrated and stymied, because their passion burned bright and they thought they were going to totally wail away in these classes, and what they found were courses that expected you to read nuanced positions and peer reviewed journals that catered to none of it.

Michael Palmere , That is understandable, but the point of universities is for ideas to be challenged. Not with rhetoric, but with facts and reason. They speak about the last 70 years, well let's look at what has happened in the last 70 years. we are headed back to the 50's. I'm that time span women's rights, minority rights, and all forms of civil rights were being challenged by 'conservative thinkers' who had the previous centuries in a headlock. What we have seen in universities is the children of the newly vocal minorities, disenfranchised, and underrepresented representing their voices more robustly. Context is extremely important. Let's not pretend that Reagan was a Herald for freedom of speech or truth, but he us widely upheld as a standard bearer for conservative thought. This is why conservatives have been net with such passionate opposition. They for a long period of time been on the suppression side of free movement amongst the people.

Stephen Miller, as a Senior Policy Advidor to the President, reflects poor judgement on the part of a "so called leader." To say that there was "nothing wrong" with the orignal travel ban and blame its disposition on a "flawed judicial ruling" disqualifies Miller from serving in this position. Be a leader Mr. President!

+Sean Kenny Being questioned isn't nearly the same thing as being shunned. In fact, as a conservative, I have no problem pushing liberals to back up their claims with actual facts and evidence. They seem to go weak in the knees when that becomes the case. I'm not saying that's you but I am saying that pushing someone to clarify and/or defend their position isn't nearly the same thing as being written off and completely dismissed simply because of political alignment, no matter how fine-crafted the argument or fact-anchored the point. Which was Joe's point, yet I'm seeing a lot of people on this page have missed that completely. Quite the bubble you've all crafted for yourselves!

This is a horrible "thesis." You don't know what you are talking about, Joe. I went to college in Texas, and I can recall all of the professors who were/are Republicans/conservatives. My mentor in college is a Republican. No one got an "F" because of their ideological or political views. From my observation, my conservative classmates possessed a worldview shaped exclusively by conservative radio, social media, FoxNews, and their own upbringing. This worldview was not based on any of our college assignments on economics, science, or even the U.S. Constitution. In my graduate class, one student was shocked that the phase "state's sovereignty" was not in the 10th Amendment and had no idea that there are seven articles in the US Constitution. In essence, the conservative media outlets has provided a disservice to their consumers by not teaching about the basic fundamentals of their ideology. Secondly, the dearth of conservative professors in college campuses is not due to some sort of prejudice or conspiracy, but, rather due to self-selection by conservatives themselves. It's simple, potential candidates choose to pursue the more lucrative careers in the private sector than academia. Why be a professor when you can make more money with less effort in the private sector? An academia lifestyle is not for everyone. Lastly, Stephen Miller is reflecting the belief system expressed amongst "conservatives" in social media. This new breed of "conservatives" do not base their views on the US Constitution, but, seemingly, the elimination of liberalism itself.

Last year I started attending Indiana University full time as my enlistment in the Air Force was over. I consider myself moderate overall - fiscally conservative, socially liberal - and expected to walk into the culture Joe describes. However, my experience has been very different. The students are extremely courteous towards me and other students who have conservative leaning opinions on issues. My professors promote an open exchange of ideas and play devil's advocate if we all think along the same lines on a subject. I've never heard the term "safe-zone" on campus and I'm still not sure what it means. I could come up with a list of problems that I think need fixing, but the etiquette of the students is not one of them. I'm not saying Joe is wrong, I just wanted to share my experience.

Being a conservative isn't directly correlated with bigotry and being a liberal doesn't directly make you an intolerant. I can identify as a conservative because I believe in a smaller role of government and less business regulation but at the same time share progressive ideals such as marriage equality, racial equality, and legalization of marijuana and decriminalization of certain narcotics. The issue is with the extremists on both sides of the political spectrum. The intolerants. The idealists. The reality is that America needs both parties because both offer great ideas to move our country into the right direction. The intolerance needs to stop on both sides.

Joe's right about tendencies of schools and faculties in the liberal arts (law, political sciences, economics..) being camped in certain ideologies, hence the expression "schools of thought". This tendency however is not limited to academic institutions though. The practice of top decision makers surrounding themselves with like minded people is rampant in all areas of society and unfortunately impoverishes the quality of the debates that ultimately leads to division and poor outcomes. Universities and colleges MUST make a conscious effort to train their teachers in the art of discourse.

It's so ironic hearing Joe talk about his experiences with liberal professors in conservative counties while I'm here having had several conservative teachers in liberal counties. While I understand Joe's argument and agree with it in part, I feel like this isn't a phenomenon particular to liberal teachers-conservative students dynamic. Anger and aggression feed polarization basically everywhere, I feel. Also, while a teacher's job should be in part one of a diplomat, if a student comes into class sharing ideology that demean their fellow classmates then they should face social sanctions. If someone's arguing why marriage equality or affirmative action are bunk, they shouldn't be shocked when their LGBTQ peers or peers of color ostracize them.

Can an American help me understand specifically what what conservatives do to court university students? Cause please correct me if I'm wrong, but young people nowadays are usually more socially left leaning (thanks to the internet among other things) right? And from an outside point of view, if neither party does anything to help students economically is it then strange that socially left leaning students grow up to be socially left leaning teachers? Help.

I am the same age as Scarborough. We went to college while Reagan was President. I have no idea what he is talking about. Also the students didn't ridicule other students over politics or anything else. That is so far from the reality I experienced I can't even imagine it. If that was his experience he either went to some unusual schools or he needs to take a more honest look in the mirror.

Apologies that you might have to translate this. But we are worried about the actual administration, which is not republican nor conservative at all!! In empathy from Germany!!

I went to college in Detroit, a predominantly liberal city, and never once had political ideals pushed or rebuffed in any class. My view came through accumulation of knowledge and the power of critical thought. I honestly don't know the political view of any of my professors. Yet, learning critical thought, the only conclusion I could come to was that the Republicans policies always made things worse and I was raised in a Republican house. Perhaps these conservatives who voiced their views didn't have the backing of a valid argument.

Interesting discussion. I learned something about where Joe is coming from. The environment in law school that he experienced sounds like he felt marginalized, disrespected, punished. Lets call it what it is, he was bullied. Bullying can happen anywhere, even in law school. IT IS ALWAYS WRONG, DESTRUCTIVE, A MISUSE OF POWER. It cuts through all political affiliations because it is personal, emotional and abusive. It is no wonder that we have such a bitterly contentious style of discourse at every level in this country. I wish that this level of honesty was more prevalent in the realm of public discussion. It would allow all of us to loosen our defensive death grip on our own opinions and actually LISTEN to the other person and see the validity of their point of view. Going forward, how about this as a standard question, "What personal experiences have you had in your lifetime that supports this point of view?"

I think it's absolutely stunning that everything joe said was ignored by everyone and "mocked and sneered at" using Donny as an excuse. But ultimately what he's saying is literally validates itself saying he's a mean conservative for having a strong opinion about everyone on colleges telling conservatives to shut up. The irony is fantastic.

I went to the same college he went to for undergrad. I majored in journalism and minored in women’s studies so I’m clearly liberal but I had a wide spectrum of professors with varying political views. I have lived in the south my whole life and up until going to college I felt like I had to keep my thoughts on politics to myself like it’s a dirty little secret because chances are I’m going to be called a wide variety of horrible things. That’s why, regardless of my thoughts on this president and his supporters, I don’t call them names. I would love to be able to have an actual conversation with them and talk about the issues so all parties can see each other’s sides but now things are so divided that there is no true debate without trump supporters calling democrats communists or democrats calling trump supporters a wide variety of things. However, my consideration towards his supporters doesn’t extend to him. I have plenty of issues with his policies or lack there of but I have even more issue with him being a wanna be dictator. A large portion of his supporters were/are people who felt like the system that’s been in place for decades has done nothing to benefit them and they wanted a change. A smaller portion, who I consider his “true base” supports him because he’s a xenophobic, misogynistic, racist, homophobic bigot who can’t denounce neo-Nazis and will separate families at our borders from people seeking asylum. One of the highlights, for me, of going to college was being around like minded people who made me feel like it was okay to not keep my feelings to myself. I befriended a lot of conservatives too and that enabled me to see things from their perspective. We lost that capability 5 years ago when Trump announced his run for presidency. So to sum it up, southern colleges aren’t ate up with liberals. They merely bring together the few that reside in the south and introduce them to all types of people, including some from out of state or from another country who maybe came from places where they didn’t have to remain silent.

I agree with what Andrew Sullivan wrote - let's face it, even if the points that the conservatives put out is wrong, flawed or "evil", those on the other side of the spectrum, the liberals, should politely and respectfully disagree and discuss why so. Insulting the other side, regardless of whose side you're on, is only counterproductive. It immediately shuts off the receptivity of both sides to listen to each other and work out a consensus. I don't believe that all conservatives are selfish or racists/sexists, just like how I'm sure that there are some liberals who are kind of people whom you'd wish you never had to meet. There are so many accounts out there of liberals and conservatives just wanting the best for their country (regardless of what the political parties are doing), they simply differ on how to do so. That being said, I felt that Joe's lashing out at Donny was both rude and really uncalled for. Where's the professionalism? Like Donny said, all Joe had to say was, "Excuse me/I'm sorry, let me finish my point first", and I'm sure Donny would let him. Joe just displayed the exact kind of behavior that he was criticizing and felt so passionate about. And right now, he has basically legitimized that behavior. Okay, he experienced that kind of crap back in his college days, but if he does the same thing, then what makes him better than the people who inflicted that on him? I gotta say though, I disagree with Joe on Ann Coulter. I strongly believe that in most cases, she's just "stirring the pot" because...well, she finds it really funny and it gives her attention. A lot of what she says is seriously absurd, and sometimes jingoistic.

Its not indoctrination if its true. That's called education Joe Scarborough. I understand Joe's point, its part of the reason why conservative and religious schools exist because they can dictate their curriculum to reflect their world views, rather than reality. Wherein these school severely limit or gloss over subjects like MLK and push Intelligent Design as being an equal and legitimate alternative. Not to mention homeschooling and how a large majority of homeschooling families are religious and/or conservative. I believe in charter schools and private schools in theory. But in practice, it seems like a breeding ground for those who wish to run away from reality and push their own agenda based in ideology. Facts aren't liberal or conservative, they just are. And it just so happens to be that religion and conservatism are often on the wrong side of many issues. That is not to say that conservatives and religious people should immediately be dismissed or antagonized but facts will be facts, either choose to accept them or be pushed aside by our increasingly globalized and interconnected world.

Buckley and others like him) is not adequately represented or respected in our institutions of higher learning in this country. I was reading something that called Joe a RINO (Republican in Name Only), but he makes enough republican points to at least make me believe he could be one. Article made sense. For Trump's base, they like Miller's tone of anger and strength, but it's kinda scary to outsiders I will admit. That fight with Donny was cool TV as well.
