George Chuvalo stood up far better to Foreman than Joe Frazier did and he was a few years older too, past his prime.

@@viking670 frazier only lost to 2 guys and neither of them was named george chuvato. frazier took his whipping like a man as tyson did later.

I echo your comments. I thought George would destroy Ali before the fight, and then when I saw Ali do his "rope a dope" routine, I knew George was going to destroy him. WRONG! However, I feel George would have won a rematch. George should have followed Gil Clancy's recommendation to come to Zimbabwe weeks earlier and to get acclimated to the heat. George chose not to do that, and it cost him bigtime!

Ali boxing ability was beyond great. Also, I once met this gentleman who had some association with Ali camp who said: the 3yr boxing ban for army refusal took Ali's prime boxing yrs away. His leg speed,ring movement&timing wasn't the same. Despite not being 100%fighter as before, Ali was still able to beat legends like Frazier&Foreman while never ducking or hiding fr any hard hitting heavyweight of the 1970s. Greatness!!!

To me, Foreman may have had the most impressive boxing career ever. He hade a great personality and did many good things outside the ring as well, but as a person Ali will always be the greatest ever.

@@joakimquensel597 there was a lot of nefarious occurrences on that day. If you watch George leave the ring after the fight, he could barely walk. He looked drunk as he stumbled out of the ring and down the stairs. The ropes were obviously too loose and Ali could lean way back so George's punches would not have the effect they were supposed to have.

Ali was able to beat Liston, and you amazed about Foreman?!

The thing that people don't talk about enough was Foreman's brutal natural strength. He hadn't even started to fill out yet. He retired at 27 weighing 232 pounds and he was still filling out. Watch the fight against Scott Ledouix to see how huge George was getting. He picked up cattle and horses on his shoulders for God's sake. What a monster.

Yes, you could imagine his "walking around weight" before going into pre-fight training mode. He probably was around 250lbs.

Fun fact: even tho he really was a big guy, today he would be considered too small for heavyweight, which shows how much heavyweight division changed since then.

The pre fight footage is unique...BEAUTIFUL . All the chatter back then was about a rematch between Frazier and Ali. This fight with Big George therefore garnered relatively little attention. I walked out of the closed circuit venue that night stunned. I still am.

@@ssviking81 yup, it's interesting to play " what if " Yank Durham wanted Joe to retire after he beat Ali. But Joe being the proud man he is stayed in the game. If he would of listened to his manager maybe things could of turned out differently for him. It could have been where Ali fights Foreman in '72 or '73 for Frazier's vacated title. I believe a lot of us think Ali beats Foreman which he did anyway. So then it really would have set up a super fight II if they could get Frazier out of retirement. For the money and demand maybe bigger than the first fight.

@@stevecvino The heavyweight division had several sub plots at that time with Ali, Frazier, Foreman and Norton emerging in 1973 after defeating Ali. Its no doubt Joe reached the pinnacle of career in 1971 but the allure of being king of the hill is very strong and makes walking away a tough thing to do. Ali faced the same thing in 1975 following the "Thrilla in Manila".

It's hard to believe, January 22, 1973, that's been almost 50 years ago. My youngest sister was born the day before, if memory serves me right, the Vietnam War treaty was signed, President LBJ had just died, Truman died a month earlier, there was no living ex President. The Miami Dolphins had just finished their perfect season by winning the Super Bowl over the Washington Redskins. I was in the 7th grade, just before my 13th birthday.

The pre-fight footage is outstanding. Interesting to see how Frazier carried himself while still the champion leading up to this fight and how he was somewhat pre-occupied with Ali in some of his statements. I like how George was not there to play Mr. Nice Guy in the press conference.

Your correct Frazier was pre-occupied referring to Ali without saying his name. At the beginning Ali got into Fraziers head and never left. Ali was a completely different personality then Forman or Frazier bringing entertainment and worldwide attention to boxing like none other.

He was not focused on George, he was overlooking to an Ali rematch. He was just a stepping stone and that was his mistake. If he retained his focus & treated it as a real title fight. He shouldn’t have looked at him in the same way he did with Daniels or Stander. But if Frazier of Manuel Ramos fight was in the ring in with George Foreman, you’d find out there would be a different outcome.

Thank you for posting this. I've watched this fight many many times over the years, but some of the background footage I've never seen before.

Beating Ali was the peak of Joe's career. But, it was also a curse. Joe became a satisfied fighter who believed he was so good that he no longer needed to train hard to get wins. When Joe fought Ali, he was at 203 lbs. You can see flab around the lower back of Joe in this fight. George was right in what he said before the fight.....Joe didn't want it anymore, he lost that edge after Ali. George was too big and Joe's style played right into George's hands. Joe didn't have a chance.

Agreed. I believe it was just mentally and physically draining on Frazier after the Ali fight. I don't think he ever got his weight down to 205 again. Plus there were a lot of things going on in the background on him. His manager wanted him to retire after the Ali win. After '71 he looked like he aged 10 yrs. Joe was ripe for the picking against Foreman.

You are correct as they say "styles make fights" and Joe's style was perfect for Big George with the uppercuts and hooks that he threw. In an interview George said he felt Joe's power early with a left hook that did land so he felt he needed to take out him quickly.

Your correct when saying that first fight Frazier had with Ali was hard on Joe's body. I think after Ali 1 Joe's prime was gone even though he won. I read after that first fight with Ali, Frazier spent months in the hospital and came close to dying.

@@richardrobinson1697 After Ali/Frazier 1,a toll was taken on both fighters.However, in my opinion Frazier got the worst of it. Frazier won the first battle but lost the war. 15 rounds slug fest to beat Ali plus allowing Ali to get into his head proved to be too much.Also, not to take anything from Frazier or any fighter who faced Ali after 1970, but Ali being banned for 3yrs for army refusil took his prime boxing yrs leg speed&overall boxing timing.

Frazier never felt that kind of power

although this is George at his mind blowing peak, both these legends just ooze class. and they have continued to (RIP Joe) to this day. what a great video. thank you for uploading

The Ref thought Foreman was using an illegal tactic to gain an advantage on Frazier by pushing him. The caution was meant for Foreman. The Ref does motion for both to continue as he steps back and Frazier who had turned away turns back. He did his job even though one of George's trainers gets up on the ring to protest. To my knowledge, no other ref cautioned George about pushing his opponents as Arthur Mercante did on that night in Jamaica. He gave Joe every chance to defend himself and possibly saved his life through the screams of Angelo Dundee to stop the horrible beating that Frazier was taking. A truly great referee!

I'm surprised he didn't give a warning to George's corner for being up on the apron. He should have kept the fighters separate and gave him a warning.

This was really the golden era of heavyweight hoxing! 18 years later, age 42 Foreman went 12 solid rounds against a 28 year old Holyfield in his prime! And even won the title the next year... The 1973 Foreman (or Ali) would have completely dominated the heavyweight division of any era, maybe even when Tyson entered the scene.

@@GH-jb6bq Fury is very agile and quick for his size, but don't get it twisted he doesn't touch Ali in that category. It can't even be compared. Ali also holds the better resume by far. Fury is dodging Usyk who is a legitimate challenger to him.

Foreman was a great champion due to tremendous punching power and a granite chin. Imagine winning the title back at 45 with a knockout over a much younger man ?

2:50 ???? Frazier had fought *TWENTY NINE* times at this point.

This was the mismatch of the century. He didnt last 2 rounds, got scattered across the ring. . Fell 7 times. And to remember that Ali took the hits from Foreman for 8 rounds, didnt fall a single time and finally knocked out Foreman.'The toughness levels are quite clear here.

Foremans defense is underrated look how he pushing Frazier off balance when they tries to set up for a punch..the side step and using the opponents momentum against themselves...

yes, he is my hero but I still find this fight to show off some of what made Smokin Joe so special. He never gave up and got up 6 times from arguably the hardest puncher in heavyweight division. Shavers may have more raw power but George know how to land bombs and could finish dudes a lot more effectively.

​@@ssviking81 i agree. Joe Frazier was an awesome fighter and champion. I was never a fan of Joe's but nobody should doubt his greatness. George's style and brute power were just too much for Joe. No other fighter dominated Joe like Foreman did. I've seen some comments on YT that Marciano/Frazier would be a great matchup. Personally I don't agree. I think Joe would have overwhelmed Marciano and would win by early knockout or TKO. Rocky was the best in his era, but the best heavyweights from the mid 60s through the 90s would have beaten Marciano. ie. Ali, Liston. Patterson, Machen. Foley, Frazier, Foreman, Holyfield, Bowe, Tyson, Lewis, Holmes, Norton, Cooney, Lyles, Shavers, Quarry and Bonavena to name a few.

"I said I was the Greatest before I even knew I was" - Muhammad Ali. He knocked out George in the 8th round. I miss the golden days of boxing. Respect for all these legends.

Love how they show the signing here, makes it look like two kingdoms declaring war!! Intense!!

So many different fighters try to look intimidating by puffing out their face or scowling. But, honestly, seeing Big George Foreman staring with a half bored look seems so much more terrifying.

Watching this after watching the Netflix documentary about Foreman. What a beast! Forman vs Tyson i their primes, who would winy moneys on foreman. I think Tyson would struggle with Foreman’s height as Frazier did.

How did Frazier keep getting up? They don't make them like that anymore.

Frazier is a true champion. The word quit didn’t exist in his vocabulary. He was capable of getting back in the fight. His conditioning let him down. Frazier should’ve come into that fight at 203 to 207 lbs. He fought overweight and if he came into that fight with Foreman at 203 lbs he would’ve withstood that barrage & came back as he did with both Bonavena & Ramos bouts.

@@ppuh6tfrz646 They stopped the fight because he was finished. He in his mind thought he could still come back. Secondly him not in condition aided his defeat greatly. Foreman could still beat him but if he faced off against a Frazier who took on Ramos. Then it will be a different story.

Foreman demonstrated great sportsmanship in this fight. Yancey Durham had a look that Frazier was not in shape to be in the same ring with Foreman.

The left by Frazier at 12:10 woke George up and he must of said to himself, my God I just got hit by Joe Frazier I have to get him out of here.

Gil Clancy (Foreman's Trainer for the Ali fight) tried to get George to come to Zaire several weeks sooner than he did for the Ali fight. He didn't. Clancy thought George never acclimated himself to the repressive heat, and it took its toll. I really believe the KO was as much from heat exhaustion as it was from the punch.

​@@jameshogan6142 I agree the oppressive heat in Kinshasa, Zaire would have been similar to Jamaica's weather....about 85-90 degrees with high humidity. I simply mentioned that Gil Clancy, Foreman's Trainer, wanted George to come to Zaire weeks earlier to train in those conditions. Ali did arrive weeks before the fight to train there and had to be more acclimated to the heat and humidity. A wise decision. George should have listened to Clancy. Frankly I expected Foreman to win and was afraid he was going to kill Ali. I have always been a huge Ali fan and was very happy that he won the fight. I have always thought he was the GOAT. An Ali/Foreman II would have been interesting. BTW I had the opportunity to meet George at the bank where I worked. He had a jumbo CD on deposit with our bank, and somebody associated with George embezzled the money. He was in the bank to get the details on who took the money. A friend of mine once owned a gym in the Houston Suburb where I live, and Lou Duva and his stable of fighters trained there for a year. I met most of Duva's fighters including Meldrick Taylor, Mike McCallum and Evander Holyfield. Meldrick and Mike were very gracious and engaging.... Evander not so much. I had the pleasure to attend the Ali/Ernie Terrell fight. I don't think the great Joe Frazier could have ever beaten Ali at that time in Ali's career. Ali was absolutely awesome.

1 Tomrider ...Joseph William Frazier was already damaged goods after fighting Ali. Former increased more damaged on Frazier. Both the latter and Ali should have retired after "The Thrilla in Manila."

Great video! 5:13 "Frasier since his bout with Ali has only fought nobodies" I don't think a commentator should call anyone a nobody. It's derogatory and also very subjective. The nobodies were Ron Stander and Terry Daniels who were in the middle of their career with a combined record of 51-5-2.

It was over in the 1st round!!!

I would have to disagree about "handsome." He may or may not be better than Ali in the ring, but there's no doubt about who was the better looking.

Bang on the money. The referring was absolutly pathetic

Joes greatest weapon is his left hook and he couldn’t reach George. While he was in perfect position for George’s greatest weapons his hooks and uppercuts. As great as Joe was styles makes fights and George was to big to strong and defensively to good for Joe to beat.

Frazier was bounced arround like a rubber ball. 😢

Hard to believe George was only 217 lbs !! Why did you ruin it with still photos over the fight ??

Headmovement from Frazier was quite ok, but he forgot the defense.

Joe had to keep his distance or he had no chance

Joe overweight, over confident and under trained for big George. I dont know if it would have mattered, George had more power than any fighter Joe ever faced before this one. Plus as Joe said in an interview a fews weeks later, Joe said he was embarrassed and lost his temper, instead of tying George up (if he could) he started throwing back bombs and his timing was way off and George just kept bombing on his wide open chin. I still dont know how Joe got up from the 2nd knockdown, he looked totally out before he hit the canvas. RIP SMokin Joe, my favorite fighter as a kid in 1969 and ever after.

What's The Purpose Of The Still Shots While The Action Was Going On? That Was Unnecessary! 😡

I think the only Joe Frazier who would have had a chance against Foreman was the lean, unstoppable Smokin' Joe who went in the ring March 8, 1971. That night was Frazier at his absolute best...fast...hard to hit with enormous stamina. Maybe that version of Joe could have survived Big George's onslaught in the first few rounds and come back to KO a tiring Foreman in round 7 or 8. Joe in Jamaica was fat at 214, slow and he had almost exhausted his reservoir of the ability to take hard punches. Their second fight was a travesty. Joe, I guess figuring he needed to be bigger to deal with Foreman's bulk, came in at over 225 for their second fight and he had absolutely nothing left, a bloated shell of his former greatness. This fight is still hard for me to watch even 50 years since it took place. Joe had a Manilla left in him but here, he was exposed as a once great fighter past his prime.

As I recall Joe spent a week in the hospital recovering from that fight. I believe he was at his best in that fight also. Ali wasn't, but he was still good. I saw Ali fight Ernie Terrell live at the Houston Astrodome ( his last fight before being stripped of his title) and I don't believe he ever regained what he lost in the ensuiing 2 1/2 years outside of the ring.

​@@brucescott4261 thank you for the correction. I think Ali was definitely in a class of his own at that time in his career. By the way Zora Foley and Eddie Machen were outstanding fighters in their careers, and I often wondered how they would have fared against Floyd Patterson during Floyd's time as the world champion. I was a huge Patterson fan but always felt that Cus D'Amato avoided both of those fighters.

I thought the 2nd Frazier-Foreman fight was as bad a beating as this. George hammered him for 5 rounds, and the last knockdown, man the whole ring moved!! The best puncher ever? Gotta be George.

Carlo Bien De Luna ...Tyson was also a one-dimensional fighter. The latter couldn't defend while on his back foot, and it's documented. Foreman would've cut the ring off on Tyson. The latter would've been knocked out by the former, inside of three rounds.

I watched all 3 fights between Ali and Joe, and Ali vs Forman also, but this fight was unbelievable, 1st round 3 KD and 2nd round 2 , game over, yes Forman was very powerful, but , i think either Joe was not 100%feet or he had some kind of drug, or the fight was fixed was fixed

Frazier Was and will be always number 3. He's default ? AUTOSATISFACTION and no imagination

The referee should have stopped the fight after the third knockdown.

That should have been stopped after the first round, if not after the second knockout. He didn't know what day it was.

You're right. Mercante was probably the most famous ref of this era. He looks the part: dapper and energetic. But he becomes flustered whenever the action really heats up. He lost control of this fight. Frazier didn't know what day it was after the third knockdown.

Foreman such a dirty bully!!

I hate George Foreman. He beats everybody in the heavyweight division. He beats Ali, Frazier, anybody. Ali holds and holds onto Frazier and Foreman. Foreman vs. Ali I really don’t like. Boring match!
