Lyrics :
In my life
I've seen sorrow
Heartache and pain
I've been burned by the sunshine
Been drowned in the pouring rain
Had too many lovers
And not enough love
I've been tried and convicted
For things I'm not guilty of
I was locked in a prison
Till you came and set me free
So how can you say
You're no good for me
Chorus :
Now that the magic has gone
You just wanna walk away
Nothing left to say, anyway
Now that the magic has gone
There's no sense in holding on
Baby now,now that the magic is gone
You know love can be tender
Love can be cruel
It can smile like an angel
While it treats you just like a fool
It captures and haunts you
Until you give in
And it stacks the dice against you
In a game you never can win
Just when I was thinking
Maybe luck was here with me
You tell me it's over
Say it's time for breaking free
Chorus x 1
I won't try to hold you down
My mind tells me let go
But my heart keeps asking how
Guitar Solo :
There's no prizes for the loser
Only the winner takes the purse
Some say that love is a blessing
But to me it's just a curse
Chorus x 2

I am broken hearted to learn that John Miles who wrote this song for Joe Cocker and is also playing the guitar solo as well as doing background vocals has passed away. I am the backup singer to the left of the screen, Cydney Davis, and I remember when John Miles first played this song for me on the tour bus. I loved it then and still love it now. He said, "I want to pitch it Joe. What do you think, Cyd?" I told him that I could hear Joe Cocker singing this but that he should also record it for himself as an artist. After Joe Cocker recorded this song we performed it in our live shows. John taught us the background and sang the parts with us and we had an amazing sound. The audience loved it. However, John Miles also recorded his own version of NOW THAT THE MAGIC HAS GONE and I was thrilled to sing background on his recorded version of this masterpiece. We had a blast in the studio. I have nothing but love and gratitude for JOHN MILES. The last time I saw him was many years ago when he was on tour with Tina Turner and they performed at the Greek Theatre here in Los Angeles. We hung out backstage and shared our memories of working with the legendary Joe Cocker. I had no idea that would be my last time seeing him. I truly thought our paths would cross again. I am heartbroken for his family, friends and fans. His exceptional talent as a musician, singer and songwriter is truly remarkable. When he joined the Cocker band he arranged our vocals on the song "When the Night Comes." He put me on the top note and really pushed me to sing full voice. He joined his voice with mine and the other backup singer, Maxine Sharpe, and true magic happened. The vocal sound was so rich and full and BIG. That's John Miles. A master of Music. My heart is so full right now with both sadness and joy. I am blessed to have shared the stage and blended my voice with such a BRILLIANT artist. God Bless you JOHN MILES. May your legacy continue through your music. R. I. P JOHN MILES

It’s so good to see an honest review of John Miles, there hasn’t been much said in the UK about his death at all. How lucky were you to have been part of the tour. What a band of super musicians, sadly Joe , Phil , and Joe are gigging together above. John Miles was the first guy I ever saw live in Glasgow 1978. He just blew me away with his guitar playing and the sound from the 4 piece band was excellent. There is a short video from that tour (although it’s from the gateway theatre in Edinburgh ) on you tube. I was trying to play the piano at the time and was amazed how good he was on piano and guitar. The Joe Cocker concert in Dortmund was tremendous, everyone seemed to be having an excellent time. Yourself and Maxine doing the choreography for the backing vocals added to the fullness of the performance. The letter stood out for me with John on the organ, Derrick Dyer on sax and what a solo from Phil Grande. Simply outstanding. Thank you so much for posting, John doesn’t seem to get recognition in the uk , god knows why not. He’s worked with so many artists with the proms concerts in Europe since 1985. Stay well. And listen to these 3 greats.

Hi Cyd- so pleased for you that you got to sing along with my musical hero John Miles. He was the best of the best and a much underrated musician- not by his peers like yourself but by the mainstream fans of rock/prog/ballads. He was master of them all and my memories of seeing him 'live', which was spectacular around the late 70s/early 80s, will live on in my muso brain! Wish had spent time with him as you did!

This needs more guitar solos. I remember recording this on VHS back in the '90s, used to watch the tape all the time. Never get tired of this type of guitar playing over this type of progression. Kind of like Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues" and other songs. The punkers and grungers and hard core people hated this sort of thing but I love it.

In my life I've seen sorrow, heartache and pain I've been burned by the sunshine Been drowned in the pouring rain Had too many lovers but not enough love I've been tried and convicted Of things I'm not guilty of I was locked in a prison till you came and set me free So, how can you tell me, baby, that you're no good for me? Now that the magic has gone You just wanna walk away Nothing left to say anyway Now that the magic has gone There's no sense in holding on Baby now, now that the magic has gone You know love can be tender, love can be cruel It can smile like an angel while it treats you just like a fool It captures and haunts you until you give in Then it stacks the dice against you in a game you never can win Just when I was thinking Lady Luck was here with me You tell me: "It's over baby". Say: "It's time for breaking free" Now that the magic has gone You just wanna walk away Nothing left to say anyway Now that the magic has gone You know there's no sense in holding on Baby now, now that the magic has gone I won't try to hold you down My mind tells me to let go But my heart keeps asking how There's no prizes for the loser Only the winner takes the purse Some say that love's a blessing But to me it's just a curse Now that the magic has gone Oh baby, you just wanna walk away Got nothing left to say anyway Now that the magic has gone You know there's no, no sense in holding on Baby now, now that the magic has gone Now that the magic has gone

What a truly multi-talented guy John Miles was. Brilliant guitarist, keyboard player and singer too.
