Joe Calzaghe - Is a Welsh former professional boxer who competed from 1993 to 2008. He held world championships in two weight classes, including the unified WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, Ring magazine and lineal super-middleweight titles, and the Ring light-heavyweight title. Calzaghe is the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion in boxing history, having held the WBO title for over 10 years and defending the title against 20 boxers (a record in the division, shared with Sven Ottke) before moving up to light-heavyweight. As his super-middleweight and light-heavyweight reigns overlapped, he retired with the longest continual time as world champion of any active boxer at the time. Calzaghe was also the first boxer to unify three of the four major world titles (WBA, WBC, and WBO) at super-middleweight, and was the first Ring champion in that weight class.

    Criminally-underrated on this side of the Pond, but it makes sense. His dad was a jazz musician and incorporated some of that into his son's style (the same way James Toney picked up "bebop" from his trainer) and what's the old George Foreman quote? @Lapaza There are some biased fans like that, but I know Europeans who have some issues with Calzaghe, not fighting Jones in his prime. You can't really talk about fighting B-Hop in his prime, because B-Hop was a freak of nature who was at his most dangerous when he fought Calzaghe. Joe has the fastest mitts I've ever seen (look up his work on the double-end bag).

I guess it was that he was such a natural fighter, he is always somewhere between unorganized and all over the place with exception punch accuracy, that put his opponents off-balance, no one was ever really able to get a read on him. His awkward style flowed so seamlessly from offence to defense that it made him boxing like water. Every time he knocks someone down they have this look on their face like they just got stung by something they didn't see and when they miss is there face says "how did I just miss him?'' the Welsh/Sardinian drunken master.

    Always had huge respect for Joe, I find that the media seriously underappreciated him when he was around, a lot of the more "modern school" fans underrated him because of his lack of pile-driving power but the fans of old school boxing always knew better. #1 SMW.

  • @rezarfar
    @rezarfar2 жыл бұрын

    The main reason Joe was so underrated was because he was simply a nightmare scenario opponent, boxing trainers generally don't like South Paws, they are far and few between so fighters typically build techniques around traditional fighters, not South Paws. Also because they are rare to begin with, there isn't many great ones, you can run through an entire division and never face a left handed fighter. Even when you do, chances are, they are not that good. So when you have a tough as nails, fast as lightning, unorthodox South Paw fighter who can take a punch and throw a punch, you stay the fuck away from him. This is why Joe was underrated, he was a nightmare scenario for any boxer, they wouldn't even put him in the picture to say that he was "dodged"... People just stayed the hell away from that crazy Welsh kid.

He was way bigger in person but as great company,....said he had to have painkilling injections in his hands in his later fights as they were so bad. Lovely man. Unreal cardio and combination punching, add in a great chin and defense....he was the full package 💯

    I mean in all fairness he didn't destroy Hopkins it was a close fight in which he got dropped in, Roy Jones was way past his best as well. I do think Calzaghe was a great fighter but using those 2 fights an example for that.. I'm not so sure. He had a really long reign at Super-Middle with an amazing win over Kessler.

Calzaghe's swarming, pressure in-fighting has been shown (historically) to be especially problematic / dangerous to pure boxers...but falls apart versus brawlers. @@SPIDERM0OSE Actually started wilting part way through the 2nd Kovalev fight. But the point is that I struggle to see any of the fighters he beat at SM having Calzaghe's volume & activity. Kessler (slow starter and measured pace), Froch was awkward and measured, Abraham had even lower activity, Dawson was a zombie. I think Bika was the most active in the S6, but he obviously can't compare to Calzaghe.
