Joe Bonamassa Talks Les Paul Bursts, Dumbles, and the Blues | Shred with Shifty
Музыка
If you can’t figure out how to play Joe Bonamassa’s solo from “Blues Deluxe,” don’t worry. Neither can Chris Shiflett. But it all changes when Shifty sits down with Bonamassa for this special episode of Shred With Shifty. No surprise that both of them reach for their Les Pauls, and Bonamassa even reveals why he switched from Strats to Gibsons in the early 2000s.
Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars-which he says has become a target for haters-but he explains that you don’t need a ’58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It’s also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic.
Bonamassa’s lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton.
This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It’s just a guitar.”

@joebonamassa we are due for a show in tell again of both nerdville locations! Can’t get enough of it man!
Chris asks great questions and then does a fantastic job listening. Thank you for not cutting this discussion. Joe is an interesting dude.
Never understood all the hate for JB. He is a guy born with a ton of talent and a singular love for guitar, its history and the music it helped create. He has not wasted his gifts but has instead put an ocean of sweat and focus into perfecting his craft or trying to get as close to perfection as humanly possible. As a result, if you love guitar, I don’t know how you could not enjoy one of his shows. Even if you are not a blues fan, the level of craft and showmanship he brings is worth the price of admission. Shiflett is another guitarist who obviously has worked hard and loves his instrument and its history. Watching these 2 pros discussing their passion is a real pleasure for anyone who ever looked at one of Leo’s creations and thought: That’s the coolest thing I have ever seen or heard. There are a lot of things wrong with our modern world but getting to see regular content like this isn’t one of them.

Anyone who dislikes Joe is a fool. This guy gives us a wealth of knowledge almost daily
This interview is FANTASTIC because it evolves from an ordinary "celebrity musician " type run of the mill interview into a true GUITAR LESSON" and that adds order of magnitude to the every metric of value I can think of,..LoL Joe is incredibly well studied in , not only the history of vintage instruments, but the techniques, styles and habits of the artists and personalities of seemingly every generation of blues players from the delta to modern times. I eman just in passing he mentions Delta blues players like BBKing, ,.Chicago blues, UK blue-eyed blues players ( Clapton , & Beck ) , SRV and his "Texas Style among many others. The mans a living , walking encyclopedia of the genre.

John is around because the industry wanted him. Joe was rejected by the industry and has just been a lingering wart for, as he claims, “the past 25 years” only to finally find memeification In the last few years. Gotta respect that, despite how much (both) their music sucks.

I haven't finished this video yet, but I'm just over an hour in and I'm loving it. I've never felt like a "real" guitar player, even though I played in front of live crowds for nigh on 30 years because I played mostly in churches and never got paid. It was truly a labor of love. Hearing you guys just talk to each other brings back so many memories and has finally convinced me of something. Playing Gospel songs for free didn't make it any easier or less real. It just meant I had to work that much harder on my day job! 😅 Thank you guys for that. That's the most important takeaway for me in this excellent video. 👏
The best Bonamassa interview I’ve seen. Joe seems super relaxed.
Good for Joe for keeping this presenter's potty mouth in check and being patient with his presumptions. Joe came up to play an evening string of shows in Hamilton, and the booking agent for the PAC offered some of my school's kids freereign to come and attend an afternoon show and tell. Joe was so respectful and intrigued by the students' question (grades 5 & 6) that we all came back home feeling that we had had a conversation with someone worth emulating. If I had had my wits about me I would have bought his CDs for all my class members.
Fundamentally, Joe is an historian of the Blues.

I love the chemistry here, and Chris' personality and humour is positively contagious 🤩 great guys!
I love just listening to him talk fluently about the things he loves. Honestly, is nice to hear anyone speak about their loves. Thanks for the knowledge and history lessons, Joe.
Wish this was 4 hours longer! ❤

Fantastic interview with Joe B... He is awesome, thank you ☕🎸
The blues is crazy. It takes over your mind when you're not paying attention and the next thing you know, you're playing stuff that you never even learned. Then you learn, then you unlearn, then you're just stumbling through the mystery of it all. Crazy.

They say don't meet your heroes, but I've met both Shifty and JB... both are great. Was SO cool to see them both in a nice long conversation here!
love Joe, pure in heart with his guitar/amp collection
I always enjoy listening to Joe talk about the business of music as well as his guitar and amplifier collection. The one thing I've learned is that whether Gibson, or any other manufacturer, is that they can build a vintage original spec guitar and is will closely emulate the sound of the vintage guitar. Ok, it may not have been the guitar played by Eric Clapton on the Beano album (or others on their works). But, these guitars are exact copies of those guitars and when matched with the right amp get really close to the sounds of those artists of the '50's, '60's, '70's and '80's. So, thank you Shifty for interviewing Joe and thank you Joe for sharing your amazing skill and taking the time out of your schedule to be the ambassador of the blues as well as vintage musical instruments that you are. You are the best!!
Love seeing the resolution of the “Dirty Burst” at the end.
I have to watch this in two parts. It's the best episode yet, and it's not surprising. Like to see Joe play with Chris
I do love Joe Bonamassa and his guitars! What a great show!
I've admired Joe Bonamassa for years, and I found this dialog very interesting. The right blend of career history, technical detail, technique and guitar nerd philosophy. Chris had great questions as well. Well done, gents!
This is outstanding, thanks guys
Best one yet!
Great to finally see Producer Jason and thank you Chris for such an EXCELLENT interview with the great Joe Bonamassa! Love you!!!
Fantastic conversation! I particularly love the discussion at 50:00 - about time compression onstage and how the audience only knows you're miserable, if you let them know you're miserable.
I used to wanna play like Clapton but now I wanna play like Joe! I have not heard a better Blues player!❤

Thank you Chris. The coolest thing I learned from this interview with Joe Bonamassa was that he picks every note minus a few pull offs, I mean, but he just doesn’t use Legato. I had no idea. I’ve always admired his note choices and I think you got into that in the interview, but picking every note really reinforces that idea of note selection. Great interview. Thank you❗️
Damn. I am smiling ear to ear. Love this channel LOVE JB and Shifty btw. You’re albums are killer
Joe is the best person and guitar fanatic in the industry … i am a big fan and follower
That was great. Love JB, and look forward to seeing him in New Zealand again.
best episode. thanks! Joe is a legend!
I want about 8 more of these with you 2 guys
A guitar player like Joe who collects, conserves and Plays vintage guitars makes me smile. Billionaire collectors like the guy who had/has the songbird guitar museum stuffed with vintage guitars…not so much. Joe is such a chill educator. Awesome show
Really enjoyed this. I appreciate how open engaging Joe is with his collection. I've learnt heaps about guitars and amps from Joe over the years
I’m a 68 year old divorced father. Had wife, house, bills, schooling not been so hard on me financially I’d be like Joe. So for all of us watching this who can’t for the cost of living be like Joe. We can all enjoy the joy of guitar thru him cause he’s sharing visually his collection but he’s opening his heart to the love all of us have for these pieces of wood and wires . Your alright Joe ✌🏻 Thanks amigo
Great Show Truly! Showing the passion, love & appreciation for music! I'm all in with "Shred with Shifty"! Keep up the great work Chris! 100 percent appreciated!
Joe is a super player. His life story would make a great movie. His love of music and guitar is astounding . I love that guy. His shows rock!
That Strat (like many people) played the sound track of my life. Wolf your a great artist and love your stuff and live band.

I first heard Joe on the Bob and Tom show twenty something years ago and have loved his music ever since! He had a bus that said “Joe Bona-who?” on the back of it.😂
Priceless.
The gifted and elite players make the difficult look so easy.
What a legend. Take his playing out of it and just based off his knowledge alone... He is a legend!
We love you Joe.
What a great interview! I love the respect that Joe has for what he collects. It’s hard to fault him for his well-earned success that’s brought him the means to become the custodian he is of these fine instruments and amps. He also uses them as the tools they were designed to be and I appreciate his willingness to share his passion.
Joe is unmatched simply amazing priceless such respect!❤❤❤❤❤
Excited to see that Fender P-90 tele deluxe!!! 'Bout damn time!

Just discovered this channel. Impressive!!!
A genuinely humble and cool dude. Come back to Charlotte!! 😃
A great interview can only be done if the interviewer does his work just like Chris does here. Chris, you're a great interviewer because you let Joe talk! Well done! Great to sit here and listen to you two explain how its done. You asked Joe great questions! Thanks for the great afternoon you just provided for me. I learned a lot.
Really love hearing talk all things guitar and music such a wealth of knowledge . And total pro and monster on the guitar
Watched a LOT of JB interviews lately - halfway thru this one, and it's the best by FAR
What a gig! Talking guitars and getting lessons from great players, nice work if you can get it!
This was freakin awesome!!!
Love Joe!!
Awesome, awesome, thanks so much guys for a fantastic interview, Joe is the best , period, he's "earned" every damn thing he has, and deserves everything he has, he learned how to make his way through hard work . God Bless you guys
Great interview!
Joe nailed it talking about the running order of a record going away.
Your guitar - the Sherwood green~ish one! Love Joe B.
People are just jealous of you Joe. Buy as much as you can, and save these pieces of art.
It is funny to watch as time flies by watching Joe's clock on his screens :)
I like Joe!, I totally share that passionate guitar/amp thing, it’s just so cool, we’re all so big fan of the 60s/70s golden era music and tone💯🙌🏼
I really like when I get to see the collection because if Joe's Instagram didn't explain it to me, I wouldn't even know what I was looking at. I learned so much from those posts.
What a Gent, it's been a pleasure to watch you grow into the legend you are today. I salute you :)
Love Joe!!!!
Great insight and information.
Thanks Joe ❤.
You know what's really crazy that I've not really thought a whole lot about before? I've been playing for almost 30 years and I'm a pretty good player. I listened to a hell of a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan when I was growing up. As I'm watching Joe show some of these licks, I never realized how much of his playing I had copied over the years. All these years I've wondered who influenced me the most and I guess I have to say now it was SRV. I listen to Hendricks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robin Trower, Chris Cain etc. however, if I'm improvising to a backing track, I play more SRV licks than anything.
I only listen to whole albums. I know I’m rare but…..that’s my fav way to do it!
Either of those first two, Teal or Blue are really sweet colors!
Joe in a stadium 🎉😎 always the entertainer fair play 🙌🏻👏👏👏👏
Great interview!!!…🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I've watched all of these and a ton of Joe interviews. I love you guys and how much joy and genuine kid like happiness you bring in these discussions.
