Jodie Whittaker reads Peter Capaldi's letter to a 9-year-old Doctor Who fan

Ойын-сауық

In 2017, Peter Capaldi replied to a 9-year-old Doctor Who fan who was sad to see his favourite Time Lord leave the show. The next month, Capaldi was to be replaced by Jodie Whittaker.
None other than Jodie Whittaker herself joined us at the 10th anniversary Letters Live show at London's Royal Albert Hall to read it.

I saw recently people pointing Jodie rocking out hairstyles. And is kind of the perfect equivalent to what she had in Who: What they told her to do was boring as hell but she is rad. Leave this girl being the Doctor doing what she wants and having her hairstyle and personality, not the boring talk of a memorized boring script we had.

@@hblancoramos6873 fr, we could have had the Doctor rocking a mullet for five years but we got the Doctor with a Karen bob. I liked when it was more wavy and frizzed out in a couple of episodes, if I became showrunner I would definitely bring her back with this hairstyle (and also write her in a way where her social awkwardness isn't her entire personality)

Behind the scenes Chibnall was getting pulled in all directions and Jodie had a busy schedule, so it wasnt down to them. Besides, Chibnall was a "script doctor" on multiple series. They dont get titled over here, but a script doctor literally tightens up the script - not editing it as such, just making it flow or sound more natural. Carrie Fisher was the Script doctor for well over two hundred movies. Yet her resume of films is actually quite small

I am sick of reading how Whittacker was done wrong. It was a great era with some great stories. The Rosa Parks and Demons of the Punjab were brilliant right at the start. Sure some were a bit iffy, Spyfall, the trash Dalek, the first ep of the Flux... but it was far from the majority. I loved her as The Doctor and I loved seeing little girls at cons having an icon to dress up as, and seeing some boys dressing up as her without anyone being bothered. This though, this letter and her reading it is so special. It shows that Capaldi is, as always, perfect. He is the superfan but it also shows that The Doctor is for.life and is a mantle passed on. It is perfect to have Jodie read it. I literally had a tear in my eye.

As you noted parts of it were iffy at best, down right awful sometimes - the companions in particular I felt were a weak link for Jodie's era. But people saying she was let down is a way to defend her and separate her from the writing since just prior to and while she was in the role a lot of blame was being placed on her shoulders. I'm actually relieved to see a lot of the fandom come around to the idea that the not so good stuff is coming from the creator and any criticism should be aimed at Chibnall not Whittaker because she did the best she could with what she had.

PS I also liked spyfall and the junk Dalek, made them scary again so that's actually a positive in terms of writing. We can all take away different bits that we did or didn't like and that's cool, it's a given with Who, that it's a variety with wide appeal.

Never say goodbye it's just, see you around. Doctors don't forget who they were a song is never over, and it continues onwards to the big finish for everyone's favourite doctor like Joddie and Peter, and possibly some old favourites. Let's remember the greatest of each Doctors moments and recall the day we watched it. The power of the doctors is to make us feel we are abroad that tardis with each doctor we have ever seen. Joddie was fantastic and possibly a turning point in Whoinverse history twice. There's been two females who played a male character, Missy the master and Joddie as the doctor, and now there is a black doctor. Some things have inspiring legacies, especially in British television, through science fiction with an old established television series that has lasted 60 years. Each doctor leaves their mark in science fiction history through the changing times and have managed to keep us engaged with the stories throughout those years The letter from a fan was brilliant, a worthy fan, and my guess, possibly in a year or more, this fan will probably appear on Doctor Who?

I know Jodie is an amazing actor, so I assume the fault did not lie with her... and as noted below, I hope she has a chance to pick the role up again in the future.

I like Jodie as an actress but unfortunately she wasn’t the doctor in my eyes, hopefully she gets some big finish to maybe expand her character better

She stated with pride that she wasn't a fan, didn't really watch any of the show before getting the part and didn't think it would be beneficial too as she was the first female Doctor Who. This showed through the failure that was her tenure. As for the writing, with the same staff, Peter Capaldi managed to be a wonderful Dr Who and despite the decline of the shows ratings and the instillation of Gender Politics and things such as Disabled people can't be evil so Davros can only be white and evil, not white, a wheelchair user and an evil mastermind because....? Capaldi has remained silent and respectful, despite the shift from story telling to telling the viewers off. Unfortunately, being a Male presenting Male Dr Who fan I have been told by the show I am less than half the population solely because I'm not a woman. Despite my education, despite my work, experience, life skills and confidence supported by results and evidence. Despite my moral base, genuine wish to be kind, I am as the show is comfortable in stating clearly. I am a man thus I am incapable of understanding the show, the plot and the explanations for the lie we were fed for 50 years about the origin of Dr Who. I am incapable of understanding why repeatedly murdering children to learn how to become immortal makes Dr Who a, good person. I mean it's a relief that as a man I don't understand how murdering children is good? I feel that transitioning to a woman and being able to both justify and support this would make me less of a good person. Did she get a tough time? Yes Did she deserve it? Yes Was it because she is a woman? No (I was genuinely excited and left ostracised for my existence as a man and a Whovian) Dr Who chose to claim the majority of its audience were toxic and by birth inferior. Then blame those it attacked for not watching the show any more, while continuing to persecute those that did not fit their beliefs. Capaldi was replaced by a Whittaker, not because it was his time, because he wasn't a woman. To send the message through plot, themes, plain statements and public statements to defend the lack of viewers. That all of the male children are inferior, are toxic and the main reason why a female Dr Who failed is wholly disgusting, dangerous, a lie and to suggest that by birth, a man is inferior to a woman is exactly the same as stating a White Woman is superior to a Black Woman simply by birth. It is wrong, unethical, dangerous and if your response is "Yeah but" remember that when they came for you, because you didn't stand up. There was no one to stand up for you!

Pal, this is how culture war looks like. So just relax. You still have Classic Who, so enjoy it. NuPoo is shit in any way and it's not a continuation of Classic Series. Don't waste your energy for nothing.

Not true though. She said she was going to watch it, but as advised not to by producers so she wouldn't be influenced by past Doctors. Get your facts right

What a lovely letter with the best intentions. Unfortunately that time his predictions didn't come to fruition. It is a shame that both actors were severely let down by the writing on the show, and then some.

The best Doctor we ever had! Capaldi, that is. Whittaker’s Doctor was right-wing trash.

The point was for stars to read other people's letters about other people not themselves, dipstick.
