Jocko Willink on "The Portal", Episode

Jocko Willink is a man who radiates decency. He is also part of a community of warriors drawn to test themselves in the crucible of deadly combat against an evil and implacable foe. Eric sits down with Jocko to learn how this cerebral Navy SEAL and hero of the battle of Ramadi against ISIS managed to bring military discipline home to the fight for personal freedom in peacetime writing kids books that teach ‘extreme ownership’ and radical accountability to children.
Give warriors a chance, and then subscribe to The Portal to be sure to catch our next and future episodes when they drop.

Jocko, "Thanos, I failed you. I gotta take ownership. I didn't do a good enough job showing you how to grow people's capabilities. I didn't show you how to balance the dichotomy of owning universal responsibility and empowering those you lead to take part in saving that universe. And that's why you think it's a better idea to use the stones to eliminate half of all life. And I'm sorry." Thanos, "...fuck man, here's the stones but can you hang out for a sec? @Tech Tacho Petar has it partially correct, but also I think there a bubble fans of Eric and Jordan are in, and it's the IQ bubble. Eric, his brother, JBP, etc are all very academic people. Had they been born a century+ ago they'd of been the Smith's and Hegel's and von Clausewitz' of their time, Jocko is much more of a Patton-esque figure, in many ways he's like General Mattis with a few less braincells. He lives exclusively in the real world, with a few moments where he gets abstract, which is why it seems almost easy for him to not talk shit about people, because he never goes out into the Dreamland of abstraction. People who like hyper-intellectuals like Eric are often much more comfortable in dreamland than the real world of concretes. This is why Jocko often appears to be a tad stupid when dealing with concepts like "masculinity". It's not real, there is no "masculine" or "feminine" there are objective empirical actions people take, and we tack on words to describe a general set of concretes, but the actions exist, not the linguistic composit me make to describe it.

This statement was very telling, not only for the reason you stated, but also because it shows that (seemingly) he has no idea what Weinstein is talking about. This is my new favorite podcast. I really appreciate the effort EW makes to ask his guests questions that differ from the ones they've answered in countless other interviews. He has a way of squeezing new insights from already well-known thinkers, with a relatively flexible approach. I can tell that he had a slightly harder time with Joko than with other interviewees, but he managed to recalibrate his questions to keep the conversations as rich as possible for his audience. The Portal is where I find the most concentrated form of change-catalising value and I always have to listen to the episodes more than once. Thank you EW, your podcast is amazing!

I can appreciate the way Eric has an admiration and intrigue with battle, and the human condition surrounding it, and even the more 'tough guy' and competitive elements of MMA and stuff like that. I just think it's really cool. After he started appearing on the Joe Rogan show, I got the impression he had discovered a world he had never been a part of and perhaps never understood. Seems like there's a side to him that's drawn to it.

I absolutely agree 100% that the American public (and the West in general) is too ignorant of and isolated from certain harsh realities, particularly as it pertains to war and extremes of human behavior. People are vaguely aware of it in an academic and abstract sense, but not in any concrete way. I fully believe extremely graphic war pictures should be on cable TV news channels as a partial inoculant to the tendency towards detached belicosity from a populace in times of conflict. This speaks to what Sherman said about (and I'm paraphrasing) the people most eager to go to war being those who have never seen it. I myself have seen an eagerness for violence take place between people in this country on ideological grounds from people I know and on the web; such as people on the far left talking about killing "Nazis" and being almost giddy at the possibility of being able to join a movement like Antifa to go out and "fuck fascists up". Probably 95% of them have never experienced violence greater than a fist fight on the playground. As an aside, this is also why I believe websites like Bestgore are absolutely vital and aren't just gruesome, tasteless schadenfreude. Ever since the early 2000's when my friends showed me the famous video of Chechen rebels slicing the throat of a young Russian conscript (while he begs for his life and tries to tell them they're good people and don't need to do it) I have ever so often sought out videos of that nature to "red pill" myself and stay sober about human evil. Two guys one hammer being the most memorable for me. It's not pleasant but is completely necessary to really understand reality in my view, and Eric is on point in suggesting we're out of touch and the media has dropped the ball in this regard.

@@richardwilliamjohnson8566 I have found images to be palatable, and even muted videos can be stomached. Audio makes it fully disturbing however. I saw a video of Los Zetas cutting a guy apart with a chainsaw while he was chained to a wall, but the fact he was likely a rival cartel member and I had it muted made it tolerable. The gurgling and screaming sounds during a decapitation are intolerable however. Certainly not something to take lightly, one way or the other. The two guys one hammer video had me genuinely disturbed for about a week.

We have crossed a tipping point in the West where isolation from the dark underbelly of reality for too long combined with the protective Mother feminine ethos permeating society has turned too many people ignorant and/or willfully blind to it. They are basing their morality in a world similar to the naive peace and love of the 60s, but with an ironic splash of "destroy those that don't buy in as they are cleary evil" (protective Mother).

One insight I've gained from this is that people seem to generally have two different definitions of ego, self-esteem, or thoughts, and when the word is brought up, its worth asking them which they mean. Jocko is talking about ego as being synonymous with self-esteem, but other times, especially in meditation circles, it can be synonymous with thoughts. It might be worth noting that abstract terms like ego stay abstract because they have multiple definitions to the public that keep them from being as fully-formed in definition as other words, and that makes them deserving of being pried into for the sake of better communication and understanding.

I like the phrase "I got your back". It was something that made me end my last relationship, realising that my partner in fact didn't have my back, even though I felt like I always considered her and our relationship in the decisions that I was making. She just considered herself. I think it can have that deep almost military meaning when it comes to how we approach family, friendships and relationships.

The military's process of training people to become aware of their own presence and their own drives and motivations seems to be a near-perfect recipe for producing strong and capable human-beings that excel in life. It's a process that could most certainly be used in many other disciplines aside from war-fighting and self-preservation. Our bodies are our most important pieces of kit and understanding what makes you the individual tick, and how to correctly modulate your feelings and emotions when necessary, is a key ingredient to success no matter what success looks like to you. Thank you to both of you gentlemen for talking the time to talk about these things.

Then why the record number of veteran suicides? Of complete mental breakdowns? No, I think the military trains people to follow orders in the moment, to fight wars, and anything else is a side effect. Someone like Jocko maybe, but he's a unique fit that got special treatment. I don't mean that in a condescending way, just that he excelled to such a degree that his training was far beyond standard procedure, and then how he implemented it was doubly rare.
