I have seen commercially guys do pull wire wraps and knots but never seen them cut back the insulation and use sets of strands to make a solid pull head like this. That is both simple and brilliant, thank you! This will save me a big headache.

I really liked this video. It was what I was trying to explain in my video but you do it way better. Thanks for the tie wire trick. I'm definitely doing that next time.

They have the basics down, but if you don't stagger the wires you're going to have a bad time. You want it to look as streamlined as possible, not a baby arm holding an apple with spikes.

You will never loose a wire, thats how I have done it for ever.

I’ve always either staggered the head and taped the wires from tip to taint or used a Chinese finger depending on the contractor. You can also cut the outside wires off and use the inside strands and it will work the same way. As long as you don’t leave a huge wad of wires to make some apprentice pull through your 90’s. Also instead of using the tie wire why not use the copper wires you already have stripped out right in front of you to wrap around the wires. That way you don’t have a big bump on the side of your head from twisting those wires

No you never use the inside strands of wire. On a hard pull you'll pull the core out of the cable and then it's all scrap. You use the outside strands so it's locked into the insulation where the drag is. The waste wire is fine to use for small wires but not long enough to use on heavy cable heads. Pulling socks are fine but often take more time to set up than the stripped head and although I've used them many times every hard pull destroyed the sock even though it held together for the pull it was trash after the pull.

@richyrollins In the telecom field we call them Chinese fingers! We just tape them because there is not enough weight to need a tie wrap.

Southwire SIMpull NoLube THHN with pre-installed crimped-on SIMpull Pulling Heads. No stripping, no tape, no baskets, no wasted time. Plus it's guaranteed by Southwire to perform during the pull.

I love my Klein wire red handle crimp tool. It's older than I am, and works great. I like that Klein refuses to sell out to China or Taiwan.

Kids. They need to learn to wrap the tie wire with their kleins so the wraps are tight as they go around the cable.

I really like the tie wire crimping method, I'll use that in the future. However, it doesn't look like you staggered your wires.

If you're only using less than half the strands the head is small enough that you don't need to stagger the wires. If done properly you use a pair of kleins to wrap the tie wire so it's tight as you put it on. You also wrap it back toward the tag end so you can twist both ends together. Tape, soap, and pull.

No sir you do not want them even you want it staggered and a longer head makes an easier pull when saleing through the bends. The tie wire just added time good enough just squeezing it.

And when you put your tape on, do the first layer with the sticky side facing out and away from the wire, then flip the tape back around and run it sticky side towards the wire. Makes it easier to remove the tape because then the tape isn’t sticking to the wire so bad.

This is probably the most common way for wire pulls but is not the proper way. When you use the few strands of wire you put excess stretch in the cable and can cause damage and derate the strands. A pulling sock is more acceptable and per specifications required for large wire pulls.

A little mediocre job my brother. 4 strands on each side have to straightened and the wire staggered, no need to used tie wire. Use the same strands to twist around the eye head and you're absolutely right, the head won't come undone and the rope won't break if you use the solid braided nylon type 5/8' with a 6000 lbs tensile strength at least.. Greetings from Local 11

Card board or rags need to be tightly wrapped next before electric tape and or duct tape is applied. To provide a cove seemless surface on the head of the cable. Does anyone else use this method?

I have, years ago. I won't say it's impossible that it helped at least a little. I've generally just staggered the ends of the insulation a bit to develop a taper. Not a lot of taping required of any kind.

@John Johnson tell me, what happens if the company you work for runs out of work because another came in and bid the job for less? Regardless how good you are, if there is no work you will get laid off. At least as a union member of the IBEW if I get laid off due to lack of work to be had they FIND me another shop to work for and my benefits, pension, and 401k follow me no matter where I go. Plus as a union member I am paid MUCH better than nonunion. Here where I live non-union makes $24/hr on average and that's not including benefits, pension, etc. While the union side makes $32.65/hr on the check after all that is taken out. You cannot convince me otherwise. My father was an IBEW journeyman and my maternal grandfather was a non-union journeyman, both were damn good at what they do but my grandfather was out of work more often (on furlough) than my father ever was. It is because of unions why things like prevailing wage exists, vacation time, good health benefits. Plus in the IBEW we are trained to do it safe, right, and highest of quality. You cannot convince me otherwise.

Believe what you want bud. I tried to educate you and others who are anti union and you still buck heads with me. The purpose of the IBEW is to organize all electrical workers together and fight for better wages, benefits, and retirement while constantly training each other to be better. At this point, it's your loss bro.
