Joanna Kustra on the secrets of colour grading and how to achieve an individual style in photography

Developing a style that is uniquely yours is one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of photography. Style and colour go hand-in-hand, and while most photographers and retouchers know about colour theory, many are unsure how to use it in practice.
In this free webinar, professional photographer and retoucher Joanna Kustra breaks down the barriers between theory and practice and shares with you her colour grading secrets, as well as tips on how to achieve an individual photographic style.
Topics covered:
• What tools you need
• The meaning of colour in photography
• Colour inspiration: where to get it from and how to apply it
• Colour grading workflow: what working with colour is all about and Joanna’s workflow in Adobe Photoshop
• Before and after: we’ll be discussing colour decisions with examples from Joanna’s projects
• Tips on how to develop your unique style
• 10-15-minute Q&A session
By the end of this webinar you will have learned how to harmonise colours by yourself and how to train your eye to choose the right set of colours.

    I took up photography 2 years ago after losing my job twice due to the pandemic. I'm 76 and wanted to start another career ( about 4 careers so far). I went to RIT for Art and Design but that was 56 years ago so my recollection of the Color Wheel and it's importance had faded. My portrait photography has taken off with me practicing and learning constantly, but the understanding of how color affects the portraits has only recently become incredibly important. Thank you very much for this intensive tutorial, Joanna. I will be forever indebted to you!

    This has been massively useful for me and I'm only still digesting the first half! As an amateur photographer (and psychology graduate) this is excellent and it excites me a lot to see what this will do for my creativity. This video reveals how little I know about colour grading (which is my weakest link in my photo work hence why I am here), and I've been looking for the right way to understand my editing and this feels like it!

    This is a really amazing workshop. I knew that my next step to level up my photography will be a more deeper understanding of colours. But nowhere I found a free or paid workshop which is professionell and fits my needs. But this tutorial nailed it. Amazing. I made notes and had to pause every 15 seconds because of the huge amount of information. I will directly test that on some of my images, to tweak them more. And yesterday I saw a film and the only stuff I could focus on, was the colours and how amazing they did there job :D Really thank you for that workshop!

    This is amazing, thank you! There is only a general question I really don't understand yet. In color theory, yellow (for example) should be the complementary of blu, and so on (RGB > CMY). But, when I look at color wheel such as that on Adobe Color or Paletton, this seems not to happen, and the yellow seems to be the complementary of purple, so as cyan complementary of orange instead of red, etc. This is the same for others complementaries. When searching for other color wheels on the web, the complementary seem to be different again, sometimes yellow the exact opposite of blu, sometimes of purple, and so on. So, what is the real color wheel we have to look at, at least for photography and video? (Maybe it is different for print). Thank you!

  • @SimonFuhrmann

    @SimonFuhrmann

    Жыл бұрын

    This is because Paletton and Adobe Color do not use RGB, but RYB, for their underlying color distribution. It's basically a transformation that shifts the colors around on an RGB wheel to match how painters form their complements and color harmonies using a subtractive, instead of an additive, color model. If you see cyan opposite to red, it's an RGB color wheel. If you see green opposite to red, it's an RYB color wheel. The million dollar question is which complements and color harmonies produce "better" images, I guess that's subjective. But given how Adobe and Paletton represent their color wheels, it seems RYB is the gold standard. On a side note, for modern print, CMY is used, which is pretty much the same as RGB, just rotated by 60 degrees. Try this: On Adobe color, in "HSB" mode, it's interesting to see that H at 0 degrees and 180 degrees, their position on the wheel are not opposite to each other.
