I'm upstate NY and there are 2 Joann stores within a 10 mile radius from me. I also have 2 quilt shops in my area that carry a nice fabric selection. 😊

I shop joanns, hobby lobby, wal mart and quilt shops. Basically, a company that supports sewing has my business. I feel so fortunate to have so many choices. Sewing and quilting are great hobbies. I just dont see the need to post so many negative comments on these retail stores. They offer sales and coupons and other ways for us to afford this hobby. Quit the mean spirited comments and get back to sewing

What I noticed is the quality of fabric is not as good Hobby Lobby and they have folks working that department who have no sewing or fabric knowledge. Wal mart has fabric and notions and the quality is again poor. If you read the end bolts many of the fabrics at Joann are from China with better qualities coming from India.

I like to support local and we have a fabulous local that supports quilters. The material they sell is tops. They also sell and repair sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. The help is great.

Thanks for sharing. I think I have been to Hobby Lobby about 5 times. I have been to that Joann Fabric as well. If Joann’s still allows you to sign up to receive mail. Most of the time, there are coupons included.

Thank you for the great view of stores and what is happening. In my area Walmart’s are trying to almost get rid of fabric area. They have most of fabric cut in those small packages which I do not like. In my area if Joann close, will be down to Hobby Lobby. Not a place I really care for. There are very few just fabric stores in the area. If there is they are outrageous price. As I am a good sized woman I make all my clothes, plus quilt and sew a lot. I have a sewing machine in front of my chair in the living room. So I am hoping Joann’s stores can stay in business!

I’m curvy too and make most of my clothing. I purchase some fabric things online and Joann’s is my go to for last minute needs. Minerva is my favorite online fabric store

It’s sad. There’s no one in Hobby Lobby and not much better in JoAnns. I can remember growing up when Fabric stores were a booming place to go. Women were lined up waiting to get their fabric cut. The pattern book tables were packed with women thumbing through the books looking for patterns. It’s just sad how our country sent all of our textile factories overseas. Women once stayed home and took care of their families and they made their own clothes. Now neighborhoods are empty during the week and women have very little time to sew. Just so sad how times have changed and not for the better.

I'm supposing that Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman would say things have gotten a mite better. At any rate, my mother's field was library science, so she was one of the women who did not have a lot of time to sew. For example, I had to sew my own sewing badge onto my Girl Scout uniform sash.

My opinion hobby lobby does not have a good enough selection of fabrics for most of us quilters. I prefer joann's fabrics for my fabrics and books for quilting.

There are a handful of quilting type shoes in my area but outside of Joann’s not many options for fabric for garments

Thanks for the video. I personally will not shop at Hobbi Lobby for ethical reasons. So if my Joann Fabrics closes I will have to drive south an hour and a half to get to a good fabric store.

Walmart in my area has a nice selection of cotton broadcloths at very reasonable cost. They cost half the price per yard that Joann's charges

I went to HL last week and the yarn and fabric was depleted. The yarn aisles were wider, hence less shelves for yarn. Home dec was very poor. Used to have so much home dec trims and beaded fringe. Lace was skimped. I was in shock. I went in for the heavy corded gold fringe and wasn't to be found.

Joann’s can put things “on sale” “all the time” because their regular prices are jacked up far above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. So they still make a nice profit on items that are “on sale”. Michael’s does the same thing.

I “think” Michael’s is expanding their fabric options. It looks like either they are rolling it out slowly or only offering an expanded fabric selection at certain stores. I dropped into the Michael’s in Plano Texas, the Michael’s off 15th St for a non-sewing craft item and discovered they had a decent selection of Ponte, solid rayon challis, cotton and bamboo jerseys. A check online didn’t seem to have the same selection. It looks like solids, but a decent range of colors. My comment about it being either a rollout or only certain stores was because I decided to pop into a store in a neighboring town while in the area and that store only had quilting cottons, utility fabrics and home dec type canvas. They have carried this for a while. Maybe someone in the know can weigh in, but I thought I should share. ** I should also mention that Michael’s is based in the Dallas Ft Worth area, and that could also be why certain stores here have an expanded selection. They could be testing the market. This particular Michael’s I mentioned is across the street from Hobby Lobby and about half a mile from JoAnn.

I will never shop at Michael’s for fabrics (barely a half mile from my home) as it’s garbage - not suitable for a Quiltmaker! Perhaps for some crafts but Michael’s will never replace Joann’s - thankfully, my local store seems to be in good hands!!!

I prefer Hobby Lobby to Joann’s for the most part. My Joann’s is freezing in the winter and hot as hell in the summer. 90% of the time it’s a mess too…..rather depressing. It never used to be this way! I’ve been trying to find white Gutterman thread there for 3 months and multiple colors and sizes are not being restocked. I don’t think management cares.

I always use coupons

For my quilts I buy fabric at the local quilt store. I have had bleeding problems with other. But buy my Kona cotton at Joann's or Hobby Lobby, both have different colors, 40 off at Hobby Lobby is cheaper because Joann's is on sale at a higher price therefore cannot use coupon. Tend to get the same person at Hobby lobby.

I was going to be near a JoAnns today. Lucky me I printed a 50% coupon. Then I looked up the Arches watercolor paper I use on line. It was $32 for 12 sheets of 9 x 12 paper. I get it at Amazon for $19. 32. I looked it up on Michaels and it was just a bit more than Amazon as was Hobby Lobby.

Well with the coupon you are getting it cheaper than Amazon or Michael’s. Hobby Lobby has rotating sales on a regular basis. I try to get my fabric from there when it is on sale every other week.

I have a Joann and Hobby Lobby at least 10 miles from my house. I am always disappointed with Joann's because the fabric I choose on the rolls is twisted. Perhaps that is the problem with that store. I end up shopping in Hobby Lobby instead.

I’m so sad about Joann. I won’t shop Hobby Lobby for ethical/moral reasons, so it’s Michaels for craft supplies and online for fabrics at this point. Our mergers-and-acquisitions business culture has created this mess. I wish we enforced monopoly rules in this country.

Joann's is going out of business. Bankrupt, selling off stock. Im in suburban Chicagoland. I've seen a couple "fabric stores." seemed to focus on fancy fabrics for serious quilting. Decades ago, I worked for Minnesota Fabrics, which became Hancock Fabrics, which went away. Haven't been to Michael's for awhile; I don't recall a huge fabric collection. One keeps seeing these YT channels where the designer "goes downtown" in a neighborhood that was kind enough to spare his life. I like Hobby Lobby, Walmart is hit or miss. Hoping Joann's may reorganize into at least an online presence. Do a Google for fabric shops in the radius you are willing to travel, and see what pops up...

I rarely shopped at Joann’s (not one close), but the final straw was when they “celebrated Pride Week” with all the decorations, etc. When a company panders to deviant behaviors in order to boost sales, they’ve lost my business. I don’t care how good their stores are.

Well, I hope Joann's survives the restructuring. I know we may see a few stores close in the process. However, Hobby Lobby is a no-go for me. I do not nor will I shop at their store. Hobby Lobby is owned by the Green family, David Green being the founder. We all have a right to religious beliefs, but they like to impose theirs onto others and their employees. They also make large contributions to organizations known for their discrimination toward the LGBTQ communities and were staunch opponents of Obamacare. This and more was reported in the Business Insider article dated Oct 2022. No, I will not shop at Hobby Lobby.

Hobby lobby has extremely went downhill in my opinion. It started with no more 40% coupons. They have become too political and religious, they have greatly reduced the amount of stock and decor items are mostly religious signs, etc. enjoy those things but I want other options as well. I personally haven’t bought anything in there the last three times I’ve shopped at their stores. What a shame. It honestly bums me out.

I use it love both stores but in the past few years I'm disappointed with both.fabric is not quality and the problem with joanns you have to hunt down someone to help you. I still like hobby lobby for fabric but they have cut back in the last 2to3years. I like the 40%off all fabric is by far cheaper then Joanna for the quality. Hobby lobby is a Christian owned that's why they are closed on the lords Day🙏🐦

I keep hearing this stuff. I wonder what their corporate website would say, or an employee. Lots of people spread the rumor that JK Rowling is transphobic, but then when shown (for their first time) what she actually said, people realized no she isn’t transphobic. It was media that spread and exaggerated and twisted things. So that said, it might be media hype similar with Hobby Lobby- so I recommend you get info about their policies from them or an actual employee. And check your own insurance for what birth control options the average medical insurance covers. I’m curious so I’m going to look now.

Hobby Lobby doesn’t support women’s rights. I wouldn’t deal with them. 💙

I like them. Over the years I have gotten many Northcott fabrics at great close-out prices, allowing me to enjoy my quilting hobby.
