Experience the essence of New York City's high society as we step into Joan Rivers's New York penthouse and discover the incredible stories hidden within its walls.
Joan Rivers, born Joan Alexandra Molinsky, was a comedic force of nature who carved her name in American entertainment history. Her career spanned decades, encompassing stand-up routines, television hosting, and even writing.
Rivers' rise to prominence began in the vibrant New York comedy scene of the 1960s. Sharing the stage with legends like Woody Allen and Richard Pryor, she honed her signature style - sharp wit laced with self-deprecating humor and a healthy dose of celebrity barbs. Her big break came with appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Recognition of her talent, Carson became a mentor, but their relationship later turned sour due to Rivers' decision to host her rival program.
Undeterred, Rivers became a trailblazer for women in late-night television. In 1986, she shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first female host of a network late-night talk show, "The Late Show with Joan Rivers." Though the show was short-lived, it paved the way for future generations of female comedians. She later hosted her own successful daytime talk show, "The Joan Rivers Show," which garnered her a Daytime Emmy Award.
Beyond hosting duties, Rivers was a prolific writer, penning several books that showcased her humor and unfiltered observations. She also dabbled in acting, appearing on shows like "The Love Boat" and even lending her voice to characters in animated films like "Shrek 2."
However, her red-carpet interviews truly cemented Rivers' pop culture legacy. Armed with her quick wit and signature red carpet fashion, she wasn't afraid to ask celebrities sharp, sometimes uncomfortable questions. Though often outrageous and bordering on the offensive, her commentary was undeniably entertaining, turning her into a red carpet icon.
Joan Rivers' legacy is complex. She was admired for her sharp wit and unapologetic humor but also criticized for pushing boundaries and occasionally crossing the line. Regardless of the perspective, one thing remains undeniable: Joan Rivers was a comedic pioneer who broke barriers, paved the way for future female comedians, and left an indelible mark on American pop culture.

The craftsmanship in that apartment is amazing. I don’t think there are still people who could do it, hopefully one or two still left who can produce such beauty with their hands. Some old buildings are almost works of art and it’s sad when they get knocked down to put up concrete and glass square boxes. It must have taken a whole team of people to keep the apartment that immaculate. Lovely place for a lady who made so many people laugh and her videos continue to do so. Thank you Joan.

Intriguing floor plan what with the little balcony or gallery areas looking down into the two-story-high rooms. --- People may not know that Joan Rivers had a college degree in Anthropology. --- In a fascinating interview with Charlie Rose (also on You Tube) Joan Rivers talked about how she and her husband Edgar would go out on Fridays to buy books and that if one of them was interested in a book, the cost didn't matter. Ms. River said that the book buying was their "charity". I think she may have meant in how they were supporting bookstores. I didn't see many books in the apartment featured here and I suspect Joan Rivers gave many books away over the years. Since she kept remarkably detailed accounts of her performances, I wouldn't be surprised if she kept a record of the books she read. Wouldn't it be fun to know what Joan Rivers during her lifetime. I imagine it would be an impressive list.

Joan’s daughter Melissa was raised in California and was attending university when her father died. This home is in New York City. I don’t believe Melissa ever lived there although she may have briefly. When Joan died, Melissa was a divorced mother established with her own home and career in California. Melissa’s home in California was in a far less formal style as was Joan’s country home in Connecticut.

The main living space had served as the original house's ballroom and had been on the building's second floor before the penthouse was added on and it was relocated. I remember seeing on some TV show (probably here on YT) Joan wanting to sell some of the decorative items she had bought as antique - to find out they were modern reproductions and worth a small fraction of what she'd paid - she was not pleased. Can't say I blame her.
