Experience the essence of New York City's high society as we step into Joan Rivers's New York penthouse and discover the incredible stories hidden within its walls.
Joan Rivers, born Joan Alexandra Molinsky, was a comedic force of nature who carved her name in American entertainment history. Her career spanned decades, encompassing stand-up routines, television hosting, and even writing.
Rivers' rise to prominence began in the vibrant New York comedy scene of the 1960s. Sharing the stage with legends like Woody Allen and Richard Pryor, she honed her signature style - sharp wit laced with self-deprecating humor and a healthy dose of celebrity barbs. Her big break came with appearances on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Recognition of her talent, Carson became a mentor, but their relationship later turned sour due to Rivers' decision to host her rival program.
Undeterred, Rivers became a trailblazer for women in late-night television. In 1986, she shattered glass ceilings by becoming the first female host of a network late-night talk show, "The Late Show with Joan Rivers." Though the show was short-lived, it paved the way for future generations of female comedians. She later hosted her own successful daytime talk show, "The Joan Rivers Show," which garnered her a Daytime Emmy Award.
Beyond hosting duties, Rivers was a prolific writer, penning several books that showcased her humor and unfiltered observations. She also dabbled in acting, appearing on shows like "The Love Boat" and even lending her voice to characters in animated films like "Shrek 2."
However, her red-carpet interviews truly cemented Rivers' pop culture legacy. Armed with her quick wit and signature red carpet fashion, she wasn't afraid to ask celebrities sharp, sometimes uncomfortable questions. Though often outrageous and bordering on the offensive, her commentary was undeniably entertaining, turning her into a red carpet icon.
Joan Rivers' legacy is complex. She was admired for her sharp wit and unapologetic humor but also criticized for pushing boundaries and occasionally crossing the line. Regardless of the perspective, one thing remains undeniable: Joan Rivers was a comedic pioneer who broke barriers, paved the way for future female comedians, and left an indelible mark on American pop culture.

You got that right
She worked hard in a lot of dives to build her career and achieve her success. She earned every thing she had!
I learned that for Thanksgiving She would include,by invitation,a few Homeless ppl. It was a great gesture.
This apartment has always just made my heart leap, I absolutely love everything about it! Nobody did it like Joan! We miss you so much, your humor is much needed these days :(

The craftsmanship in that apartment is amazing. I don’t think there are still people who could do it, hopefully one or two still left who can produce such beauty with their hands. Some old buildings are almost works of art and it’s sad when they get knocked down to put up concrete and glass square boxes. It must have taken a whole team of people to keep the apartment that immaculate. Lovely place for a lady who made so many people laugh and her videos continue to do so. Thank you Joan.
Warmth, light, and classic elegance! We miss you, Joan...
Joan was a great lady and is sadly missed. She deserved everything she worked for and was a class act.
Beautiful and exquisite, classic Hollywood home, of the ages. 👍

My goodness, what a palace!
I miss her bless her soul
Awesome class. Royalty interior. I couldn't have sold it if I were Melissa. It's all that she had left of her Mother.
Absolutely beautiful. I wish it was featured in Architectural Digest
She had lavish taste
"Pre war" is the ultimate NYC.
The home was beyond magnificently decorated. The video was well written and beautifully narrated. New subscriber
I loved Joan…brilliant, funny, and designer. Miss and love her.
I love Joan Rivers and I miss her very much. Once in a party during the 90's in NYC, while she was attending to close friends at her fabulous penthouse, she told me that her mansion once was owned by members of the J.P. Morgan family. ❤BRASIL❤.
Intriguing floor plan what with the little balcony or gallery areas looking down into the two-story-high rooms. --- People may not know that Joan Rivers had a college degree in Anthropology. --- In a fascinating interview with Charlie Rose (also on You Tube) Joan Rivers talked about how she and her husband Edgar would go out on Fridays to buy books and that if one of them was interested in a book, the cost didn't matter. Ms. River said that the book buying was their "charity". I think she may have meant in how they were supporting bookstores. I didn't see many books in the apartment featured here and I suspect Joan Rivers gave many books away over the years. Since she kept remarkably detailed accounts of her performances, I wouldn't be surprised if she kept a record of the books she read. Wouldn't it be fun to know what Joan Rivers during her lifetime. I imagine it would be an impressive list.
Melissa has a beautiful home in LA. She auctioned off most of the furnishings and decor and sold the NYC penthouse I’m sure she did pretty well for herself

I don't think she's sold this apartment, it's sat on the market for many years. It's too ornate and needs to be completely gutted and renovated.

Because young people do not appreciate this kind of architecture, decor, environnement. It's a special style like you found in Paris or in a castle.

Joan’s daughter Melissa was raised in California and was attending university when her father died. This home is in New York City. I don’t believe Melissa ever lived there although she may have briefly. When Joan died, Melissa was a divorced mother established with her own home and career in California. Melissa’s home in California was in a far less formal style as was Joan’s country home in Connecticut.
Lovely absolutely Lovely
The main living space had served as the original house's ballroom and had been on the building's second floor before the penthouse was added on and it was relocated. I remember seeing on some TV show (probably here on YT) Joan wanting to sell some of the decorative items she had bought as antique - to find out they were modern reproductions and worth a small fraction of what she'd paid - she was not pleased. Can't say I blame her.

This video lifted my spirits after having watched a KZread video showing "affordable" apartments in London, full of black mould rotting windows and so on. Either way, I couldn't contemplate living at either extreme.

Unbelievable decorating accomplishment!

I was surprised it's so over decorated and garish. I thought Joan would be more sophisticated. Thanks for the look!

I wanted to see the kitchen as it was when she lived there.
Loved Joan, apt is gaudy
Yeah!
❤❤❤❤❤❤😂❤❤I LOVED IT !!! SHE WAS DIVINE!!! LOVE HER SHOWS SHE WAS A GREAT LADY, AND SO IS HER DAUGHTER.....
A nice place.
It’s over the top.
Very nice.
She was actually very fond of Mrs. Spencer
I just couldn't live in a place like that. It's rococo and much too large for my taste. The only room that appealed to me is the library. Joan herself was an absolute hoot, though.
Joan’s Russian heritage gave her a regal decorating style.
Loved Joan Rivers. She really believed in free speech.
How is it that nobody seems to remember Rivers' endorsement of Donald Trump, claiming that as a businessman he would "know how to get things done"?

She was blinded by her time on the Apprentice, which she won. I find it hard to admit now...but I was also a huge fan of the Celebrity Apprentice show. He honestly didn't seem that bad back then. I didn't pay attention to news stories about him (if there were any at the time).

@@justinwilliams7290 Thank you for your considered reply, which makes some sense. And however tempting, it wouldn't be fair to speculate as to how Joan would have reacted to the way Trump tormented Kathy Griffith like that
This must be the place that really didn’t have a normal kitchen, it had a micro kitchen where you mostly just could heat things up or make eggs etc. she did not like to cook so this was fine with her.
The woman who knew too much.
I can't stand when people swoop in and purchase only to flip.
It is a beautiful apartment, however the pink and all the ruffles need too go. It is exquisite though.
Remember her saying she have parties and she have Tiffany what nots around apartment.they would just go missing. Like so many of those townhouses, the kitchen was size of butler’s pantry. Large enough to warm food for parties.
The way that joan rivers had , it was magnificent an opulent , but if it was transformed into something contemporary , it doesn't keep the same value or specialist that she once had , so whoever purchased that and modernized , it should really be ashamed themselvesthey really need to turn it back into what it once was
Like Big Mike…
😳
Did I miss the kitchen?
If it's been updated for a more contemporary lifestyle, I'm sure it's lost all its architectural detail.
Wish she was stilĺ hear ,she would have lots of jokes in this crazy times. But she would very sad hoow people are treating Jewish people.
can we talk?😏
It’s too bad she didn’t age gracefully instead of all that plastic surgery! She would still be alive if she didn’t let her vanity ruin her life

Joan did age Gracefully.. by choice, Cosmetic Surgery was just a part of her own Personal expression of Who she was and will always be.. especially for those of Us who’ve loved her n still Cherish the memories Joan gave us .. be Kind, life is shorter than you think♥️
I can't even imagine what the property taxes are for this place and the monthly dues for maintenance of the bldg.! Oh wait, I found it...$16,812 per month for monthly maintenance and $10,976 monthly tax bill. It's a shame she died the way she did and it could have been prevented. Otherwise she would still be with us.
Ok, looking at the floorplan, who designed this layout? Not a layout I'd want 🤷♀

It's a shame her daughter Melissa got rid of everything soon as her mother passed she could have open a museum after selling the place her fans would pay to see her jewelry artwork and even furniture but Melissa only cared about the money
Great views but it's gimmicky. A large living area and smaller rooms squashed in. Like Greenvale in the '80's.
She died right after making a comment about the Obamas
She did not own Fabergé eggs. These kinds of factual flubs drain from the video’s authenticity.
