Excellent interview. I think this is the best I have seen of any interviews of Joan Rivers. Her intelligence really showed. Your focus was so on the guest that I felt like I was talking with her. Really good.

I like this interviewers, he gets it - doesn't try to make it all about himself but pays due respect. And my God, Joan Rivers deserved respect, what a legend, what a talent, what a star! She wiped the floor with those puffed up, conceited no-talent fools like Jay Leno. He won't be remembered ten years from now (does anyone really recall anything he ever achieved now???) But Joan Rivers was a superstar, who deserves her place high in the comedy hall of fame among the best of the best. She wore her stardom lightly, she was humble and self deprecating throughout her life, as TRUE stars are. An incredible human being, a one-off and much missed - we shall not see her like again.

@Linda Gray Amen, Joan was sheer class. I think she appealed to women because she was so real - she was even real about her cosmetic surgery, sharing every detail of every procedure and even writing a book about it! She had many deep friendships that lasted her lifetime, including with the wonderful Vincent Price and his wife the actress and renowned wit Coral Browne. Class is drawn to class! Joan is very much missed - and sadly I don't yet see anyone, male or female, who can even try to fill her comedy shoes.

I'm back to watch this interview AGAIN! After about four or five times! Lee Hawkins is one of THE finest interviewers I have ever seen. (I'm talking skill-wise.) He has such an ability to focus on the guest and never over power them. He asks pertinent questions that aren't shallow and irritating. I personally get irritated with interviewers that purposefully ask questions to try to slant it into a positive or negative light. Hawkins allows me to draw my own conclusion. One of the best. I love Joan Rivers and he allowed her to speak freely. Just a great job.

+thomas261989 Joan's stage persona was crass and often ugly. The lady herself graduated from Barnard, worked for Bond's as a fashion consultant, and was a legendary theater attendee for the entirety of her adult life. I really appreciate someone who could slay on the talk shows but also step out of character to do long-form serious interviews like this and the several podcast appearances of her final years.

Joan was an amazing businesswoman by using fame/celebrity and figuring out the business opportunities that she could manifest. She's done an excellent job of teaching Melissa business and how to handle it. It's wonderful that after Edgar's death she picked herself up, learned business in and out and taught her daughter and grandson.and then left them $125 million!!!!!!!! No one understood how wealthy Joan was.

Thanks for watching. I'm sorry you found my interview with Joan boring. My goal in these interviews isn't to "riff" off of the guests jokes or to show the viewer how funny and entertaining I am. There are so many "celebrity interviewers" out there doing that, and I don't feel I need to add to that phenomenon. I don't think I would be great at it, although it does work for others. My goal is always to do an informative interview that gives the guest a chance to show a side of themselves that the public rarely sees or knows about. I have interviewed many legendary comedians, for example, and I make it a point not to allow them to turn it into a standup routine, but to make it a real interview. If it seemed like I didn't "go along" with Joan's jokes, your observation was correct. If you watch any of my interviews with comedians you will see that I do not go down that road with them. I try to keep them talking in a serious way about their business and brand, in ways you don't see elsewhere. The beauty of it, is they keep calling for these interviews. I know I am not the funniest or best looking, but for some reason major celebrities pitch me and grant me interviews. I watched this interview in memory of Joan, and happened to stumble upon your comment. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to watch. She was a lovely lady and she will be missed. I am not ashamed of this interivew. I believe Joan I succeeded in doing a WSJ-caliber interview with Joan Rivers, that showed another dimension. Not everybody is going to love my style of interview, but I appreciate the people who follow them regularly. And once again, I appreciate that you took the time to watch as well. I am sorry if you didn't like it, but I hope that you will continue to watch with the knowledge of my intentions, and perhaps you will see value in it then. Fact is, I'm not a comedian or even a host. I'm a journalist. I am not here to interrupt guests or to crack my own jokes, but I'm here to help my viewers understand and to inform them. My interviews aren't about me. They're about the guest. This was about Joan. She was the greatest. Thank you, Mary. Best, Lee Hawkins

Just as Joan, I get your style and enjoy it because it brings a different perspective when watching, just like the awesome Wendy Williams interview (btw Your interviews I watch at least once a month lol because they are inspiring) Your questions and your conversation show the mindset behind so many of these great celebrity strategies to their success. It's not just another "press tour" interview, but a very in-depth and interesting interview. Keep up the awesome work!

And I think just the opposite! I looved the interview! because it was smart, prepaired and original. And most of all, Mr Hawkins let Joan Rivers shine and be a star, and show her true self. I am so sick of boring, always the same questions which show that the interviewer doesn't know anything about the guest. In this interview I was truly interested what she will say and what the next question will be. Respect! PS And Mr Hawkings, you really look dapper there! Great look!
