The exact date of her birth is unrecorded. The majority view is that she was born in either 1904 or 1905 in San Antonio, Texas. Her tombstone says 1908. Some sources place her birth as late as 1909. This uncertainty only serves to heighten her allure. Who was she?

What people don't understand about Joan is she was literally Always in character!!! She's not phoney at all.She was a perfectionist and a image person. She was very careful with her words, facial expressions and body language because she was trying to give off a perfect image to her fans.Yes she should have been more down to earth but I think she was just living up to being Joan Crawford! She knew she was a huge star and she was a private person so in public she just gave people what they wanted and that's Joan Crawford.

I think it’s sad that Joan did not fully realize how talented she was. Her performance in Mildred Pierce alone (not to mention all of her other wonderful performances) is phenomenal … one of the very greatest performances in film. It seems she felt like she needed her beauty, the glamour, the grace and poise to justify her stature as a movie star. I love Joan for all the things she embodied, but I love her most for her acting ability. ❤

The reason Joan was like that with the young actress was becs she was hyper aware that with the introduction if the young actress, the attention of viewers would shift logically even for a few minutes. Crawford could not abide that so she did this extremely artificial choreography with her arms and hands and strange intense ravenous eye focus on the young woman so that the audience would be mesmerized by Joan even during the young girls intro. Hence the only thing people would remember in the interview was joan.

Helen Hayes said "Joan tried to be everything to everyone but she never should have tried to be a mother." Joan literally knew everyone in Hollywood and not just Hollywood but in all reaches of show business and not just actors but directors, producers, makeup artists, costumers, lighting experts and musicians. She in fact had a lovely operative voice and made a recording with a great opera singer who was a friend. Joan came from nothing and authored her own life, mistakes and all.

Not British, but also not "brutish" American. When faced with a proper English accent, this can be intimidating (FYI this host was exaggerating his accent as well). I could go on but I don't feel like it. Tldr: she was trying to do it right and knew people were looking.

Because of "Mommie Dearest" the real Joan has been obscured. She was a strong person who survived a terrible childhood, she was ambitious and decisive and a workhorse. But I know people who knew her and worked with her and they said she was a terrific friend, loved Christmas and giving gifts, and was very funny. Made mistakes with the first two kids surely but learned from her mistakes I think. She had no model on how to be a good mother and both she and the first two kids suffered for it.

A strong person doesn't control and ABUSE children. Narcissists are definitely not strong they are weak, insecure, controlling FAKE people. If she was actually a strong person she would have never adopted children from the beginning for her own selfish reasons. Her kids are strong for surviving that crap. Please don't give props to a toxic person they definitely don't deserve it.

@@jamescadzow9545 But why only "narcissistic" mental illness is used to define Joan? Everywhere I see the same word. And to be honest, I think that of all the mental illnesses she had (such as double personality or bipolarity), narcissism is the least seen in her. She liked to be the center of attention in front of people because she came from an extremely poor family, it is not something critical. And narcissism np makes a person aggressive but other illnesses yes and I do not judge child abuse. But I think it was all exaggerated (which Christina herself recognized) and there is worse child abuse in today's family that we all know already. It was the first book of child abuse and destroyed Joan because the world at that time could not imagine such a mother and Christina knew how to take advantage of it.

She had a fear of losing her place in show business. The fear that someone younger would be more appealing to the movie industry than she was. You can tell when he asks her about the youth in the beginning. She pointed out, "We wanna be here too." "We" represented the more mature and seasoned actors/actresses That's why you see the control she had over the actress that came out last. It's almost if she (Joan) told her what to say and what not to say. As strong as she was, she we was intimidated by the younger actresses.

We learn it honest. You should want to make a choice to change and not raise your kids like your parents did you, if it was harmful and hurtful. What I got most from Mommy Dearest the movie, was that I was headed in the WRONG direction, as a mom, if this mother reminded me of me. They were small things, but the incidents stick on to the children, causing them bitterness etc. Just love and just live. 😍😗😚😘 #youknowshehigher

By holding her hands... Joan knew this. The younger girl has to answer questions in the interview without the full ability of be able to express herself with body language. Which would make her seem more grandeur and over shadow Joan. For goodness sakes, He asks her "about her pantomiming," and she hesitates...then talks about having to learn to communicate with her eyes and hands and less with her words. Also, Joan is interrupting her and helping her answer questions. Pulling her in close when she is talking to him. She totally was threatened by this young lady and was making sure she did not get her own spot light, and if that camera zoomed in .... she wanted to makes sure she would still be in the shot. This interview was interesting. JC comes off as extremely hungry for the spotlight. She starts off the interview portraying a shy modest woman... and then as soon as that girl enters the room... she becomes domineering. It was weird.

+lasirenas1 You are 100% correct. I think she was acting bizarrely/thirsty here because she was 52 years old, just past her prime. A "pretty young thing" in those days was always a threat to the screen actresses of the Golden Age. The Hollywood studio system was breaking down in the 50's, and Crawford, Bette Davis, and Kate Hepburn were referred to as "box office poison" by the 1950's. She knew her career was reaching its peak.

WHat idiotic comments !!! Even Faye Dunaway called it “kabuki theater” yet you mindlessly accept that as TRUTH??? Not a very rational mind... quite foolish in fact and simplistic. Was Joan mother of the year? No. Was she a monster ? No. Many great stars came to her defense including her own ex Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Barbara Stanwyck and even her rival Bette Davis. Very few actors and actrsses make great parents or spouses. They are married to a crazy business, have a desperate need for attention because of all the rejections and competitiveness.. they’re more in need of parenting themselves than being one! But have that desire nonetheless. Cut Joan Crawford some slack. She was no worse than my father but he was a good man deep down. Christina was a brat and a jealous one to boot. She is still bitter and hateful.

Joan demonstrated all the attributes of someone with a personality disorder. Little doubt that "Mummy Dearest" documented some of the abuse. But if you read up on NPD - you'll realise her kids must have been sent through hell and back. I think they were remarcable foriging in honesty. Little doubt there are people that idolise Joan and can't or won't see the signes of absue. Others with NPD will obviously see nothing wrong with her abuse (other than it came out). Poor kid. Evil woman. But then people with NPD have done far far worse.

Richard Simpson Even being a fan of Joan Crawford's work, I am very aware/convinced she was mentally ill and a probable alcoholic which enhanced her unstable moods. What is tragic to me is on some level I think Joan really loved her children but when you are so messed in the head you cannot raise them properly. I fully believe Christina Crawford loves her mother, even though she wrote that book. People who are abused often write for a release. Her abuser, her mother, just happened to be Joan Crawford. Now... this is all really me thinking out loud, because I find the entire thing fascinating to try to figure out - because none of us will ever really know what happened. People should really read the Mommie Dearest book and overlook the movie (unless you want a campy good time). Again, I am just putting my own personal theory in. If Joan was sick with any kind of mental disorder and couldn't get help then I feel sorry for the entire family, that includes her.

The denial paperwork states that the caseworkers and physicians found her to have no nurturing characteristics and violent episodes of anger.... To deny Christina and Christopher were abused because she was once famous if fucking pathetic and vile... Just another dumbass mistaking what they perceive as talent for worthiness. Just because you believe someone is glamorous, beautiful and or talented doesn't mean theyre good people and their vile behavior should be excused... There isn't one person besides Joan and her youngest twins that claim joan wasnt abusive. I think the twins had a completely different upbringing.
