Wow, I also named my daughter after her. I lived in Nashville when she came and recorded there and my daughter Joan and I went to the studio and my little one was about 3 yrs then. Joan Baez LP album Joan Baez/5 was the first record I bought as a teenager. She is my music roots. For years too many to count, my own voice was silenced by clinical depression. Thanks to à new doctor and a change in meds the nearly permanent cloud has lifted. I have picked up my Gibson Acoustic 12-String Guitar and am reteaching myself to play when the arthritis in my left hand fingers lets me. When I feel like taking on a challenge I tackle one of Josh Groban's songs. But it is the women, confident to be vulnerable when they sing with their very souls with whom I truly resonate. Long ago when I was a very young boy, my mom would come to me and sing me to sleep. No lullabies from mom. She sang hit parade and big band songs. Her favorites were Judy Garland, Doris Day, Rosemary Clooney, and Peggy Lee. Mom lives with me now. She will soon be 100. No moss or dust is on my mom's taste in music. She loves Joan Baez, Adam Levine and Shakira. Mom's vocal chords are dried out from the meds she takes. She has a rare good day every now and then. When mom is in fine full voice she sings, John Lennon's Imagine, So This is Christmas (at Christmas time) and All That Jazz from Chicago. So mom is my genetic link to music. Joan Baez is my roots. Currently, I am listening to Belgian-Canadian singer Lara Fabian and Dutch rocker Anouk. I wonder if Lara Fabian and Joan would collaborate on something if introduced to each other.

Amazing! Before I even heard a word from her mouth I guessed correctly that she would have something bad to say about Trump. Liberals never seem to have an original thought. I guess they all think the same because they have the same friends, listen to the same news, believe the same things and shut out the same voices. Conservatives, on the other hand, think for themselves. This is why we do not always agree but we generally agree about the truth of what is happening in politics. Notice that Joan has a disparaging remark about Trump's personality. Conservatives could care less about how polished a man's speech or demeanor is. Liberals always attack the individual with personal attacks.

Exactly. That's what left wing, anti- Americans are - hateful, narrow minded, strong opinioned, use shaming language, try to silence or sensor others because, why ? They have no factual justification for anything they so strongly believe in, yet actively undermine, create false grievances and eagerly imprison away everyone else without trial if they could. So much for the fairness, equality, love and peace they only pretend to represent. Their entire value system is a con game, pretend to be good while pushing evil ends, all fraud, cheating and fallacy with them. Just look at the twisted, sociological mess she pushed her whole life and her generation left for America. I guarantee she is giddy about the destruction. More satanic than angelic. It simply is so.

Bonnie Davis Oh my God get your facts straight! But then who needs facts when you support the Liar in Chief? BAEZ PUBLICALLY DENOUNCED NORTH VIETNAM'S ATROCITIES. From the Wikipedia article in Baez: "During the Christmas season 1972, Baez joined a peace delegation traveling to North Vietnam, both to address human rights in the region, and to deliver Christmas mail to American prisoners of war. During her time there, she was caught in the U.S. military's "Christmas bombing" of Hanoi, North Vietnam, during which the city was bombed for eleven straight days. "Her disquiet at the human-rights violations of communist Vietnam made her increasingly critical of its government and she organized the May 30, 1979, publication of a full-page advertisement (published in four major U.S. newspapers)[65] in which the communists were described as having created a nightmare. Her one-time anti-war ally, Jane Fonda, refused to join in Baez's criticism of Hanoi,[66][67][68] leading to what was publicly described as a feud between the two."

Seems like more are criticizing her, making me wonder how they can like her music without respecting her values. But that's the trend of the times, it seems. Especially younger people who don't have the experience and the wisdom to understand what happened in the past, which human rights were gained, upheld, protected through the protests against injustice in the 1960s and 1970s and what the music of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan , Judy Collins, Pete Seeger and many other musicians of that era stood for could learn valuable lessons. The Day They Drove Old Dixe Down is just a little ditty that can be sung by anyone and doesn't really mean much in the context of Joan's musical repertoire. A few days down the road, when greed, self-servedness and intolerance have completely obliterated altruism and human decency, voices like this will be missed. And those who wittingly or unwittingly voted in politicians who didn't really have their best interests at heart - and/or their children -- will have their work cut out for them setting it straight.

Beautifully worded, so wise. Thank you, from someone who also remembers the Civil Rights movement and singers like Joan Baez. As a collective, we really did move mountains that so many people now don't seem to understand.

SpiritsEnchantments yes I was part of the collective, I'm 70 now, I met her all alone in her dressing room backstage in Santa Barbara unexpectedly, these are words of wisdom what she says about Trump, he must be Hitler reincarnated? And her new song God is God she still has courage and shes still righteous: she even uses this word to describe herself, shes 76 now, i'm not the only one that cried for weeks, now I know Joan Baez shared my tears with me, what a shock this is for our generation...

Faewaterspirit - I don't think she was stoned but so what, if she was? I doubt that many pot smokers, in particular, would have voted for Trump. They are NOT as STUPID as those who voted for Trump. I realize, however, that his supporters are unaware of how foolish they appear to non Trump supporters. Trump himself must take you for fools, too. How could he NOT view you as fools? He knows that you believe his lies, no matter how farfetched and how easily shown to be lies. You also let him string you along by telling you anything you want to hear, while accomplishing almost nothing he has promised you. He brags on accomplishments that are totally bogus, and his supporters think he really did those things. I am still wondering how so many people's brains could be in La La Land all the time. Is the "Trump Network," aka Fox News, feeding you subliminal messages? If not, why can you not tell fact from fiction? His supporters may be unable to understand this, but Donald Trump cares only about himself. He uses the Presidency to lower his own taxes, drum up business for his own financial pursuits, support and protect his own entire family, and stroke his own inflated ego. And all the while, Trump is telling lies, lies, and more lies, while screwing the American public, the environment, and in some ways, the entire world. Though he brags on himself endlessly, Trump has accomplished very little, since taking office.
