Jo Ann Castle, "Maple Leaf Rag" (2003)

Музыка

Here's Jo Ann Castle to play one of her all time favorite standards: Joplin's famous 1899 "Maple Leaf Rag". It's interesting that this is the only recording I've heard where she omits the trio and simply repeats the A and B strains again. While I prefer her original album recording and various period Welk Show performances of the tune, I thought this was interesting enough to upload. From the 2003 PBS pledge drive program, "God Bless America".
You can download the original 1899 sheets for "Maple Leaf Rag" for free from the Charles Tempelton Sheet Music Collection: cdm16631.contentdm.oclc.org/d...

Most don't realize that she wore all those feathers in an attempt to hide the fact she put on so much weight. she didn't need too, people lover Her no matter her size!

And that’s why they call her the queen of the Ragtime piano. Jo Ann Castle was a boss sitting at that piano bench!

"The Lawrence Welk Show" was not one of my favorites as a kid with the notable exception of Jo Ann Castle who simply mesmerized me (and still does on KZread) with her amazing honky-tonk style at the piano.

If Jo Ann Castle likes playing fast then have her play Jelly Roll Morton’s Finger Buster or Lucky Roberts Junk Man Rag.

Very disappointing that she didn't play the "trio" part...my favorite of the whole piece. Some performers do not play all of it.

@@PiotrBarcz -true but she exposed Ragtime to a lot of people who knew nothing about it and many were led to discover Scott Joplin and others because of her. I heard Jo Ann Castle on the Lawrence Welk Tv show in the 1950’s and hearing her made me want to learn more about Ragtime so I bought Rudi Blesh book They All Played Ragtime and Riverside lp’s of piano rolls and later joined the Maple Leaf Club in Los Angeles that had monthly meetings of pianists playing real ragtime.

@@PiotrBarcz - thanks for your recognization of Jo Ann Castle. Forget Marvin Hamlisch and The Sting. Jo Ann Castle was way before that movie and her great showmanship in addition to playing the piano introduced so many to the great Ragtime composers. She just didn’t sit at the piano and play. She was a whole show.
