Jo Ann Castle discusses her time on the Lawrence Welk Show from 1959 to 1969
Jo Ann Castle, often referred to as "The Queen of the Honky-Tonk Piano" by Lawrence Welk himself, made her debut on The Lawrence Welk Show in 1959. Introduced to Mr. Welk by Joe Feeney, Welk quickly hired her after hearing her accordion album. During her time on the show, she played piano, accordion and sang. Each week her upright piano was painted with a different brightly colorful design.

Never heard at least back then, (and probably now) anybody get more sound out of a honky-tonk piano. She was much more talented than most folks gave her credit for.
Lawrence Welk said it like this "Queen of the honky tonk PIANA" note the spelling he used, he was the greatest. JoAnn you are THE BEST! WHAT A TALENT IN ONE PERSON.
Jo Ann is one of the GREAT talents of our age. Amazing accordion player as well!

She left the show(the ABC version of "The Lawrence Welk Show") in 1969 because, as she often stated in interviews, she wanted to go on to greener pastures, entertainment-wise, and Lawrence was adamant that she stay with the show. Jo Ann has said that leaving the show was the hardest thing she ever did in her life.

I have read she “left” the show due to Welk’s insistence because of her substance abuse issues. I read by the late ‘60s she became addicted to alcohol and amphetamines. I always thought she was incredibly and amazingly talented. NO ONE plays the upright honky tonk piano like Jo-Ann.

@@martyduncan2636That’s true, Joanne has had a rough life. She was terribly addicted and was very in an abusive relationship as well. She had a stroke and has been on the mend the last several years. The last I saw her she was in a wheelchair. For such a talent she paid a heavy price.
