Question Type 4 Number 9 @35:05 The man is saying that this year's sales outpaced the sales of the year before last. In answer choice 1, she says that they got ahead of / 抜いた the year before last, which makes sense. In 3, marked as correct, the woman says that (also/こそ) next year they should aim to outstrip the year before last (two whole years ago). But why would she not say let's try to outpace THIS year's sales?? Why would she remark aain about beating a sales record so far into the past?? I think I understand the grammar but I don't understand the logic.

I checked with my brilliant Japanese friend. He and I could both physically hear perfectly what is physically being said. 「今年度の売上げがよ。過去最高だった一昨年に次いで高かったよ。」 But he was hearing this: 過去の一昨年は、最高だった。今年度は、一昨年に次いで高かったよ。 While I was hearing this: もう過去になっている今年度の結果は、最高だった。一昨年から次々に(一昨年より連続で)高かったよ。だから、今年度の売上は一昨日以来上がっきたの。つまり、女の人が言うとおり「一昨年を抜いたんですね」。 Of course, by what we "hear" I'm taking about the interpretation of the meaning. We are physically hearing the same sentence but interpreting it in effectively opposite ways because of ① different assumptions about what 過去 means here and ② my misunderstanding of the verb/adverb phrase 次ぐ/に次いで as meaning 次々に. A good learning experience, and glad I will never forget the difference between に次いで and 次々に, but that doesn't mean I'm happy about missing a question partly because Japanese is notoriously ambiguous. 😮‍💨

that one goes by so quickly, but at the end the lady says メールで伝えておくね meaning she'll let everyone know, not the man
