    JJ is super smart, a solid NBA veteran, college phenom, been coached by some great coaches, and had long NBA career. I think he could do well. Steve Kerr did the same leap and he did pretty well...

  • @mkingadiffernce

    @mkingadiffernce

    He was not a college phenom thats cap and he never won a chip at duke not even a final four. Steve Kerr has won 5 chips and was a gm of Golden state and Kerr learned under 2 coaching champions Phil Jackson and Pop…and Kerr was apart of the organization which helped golden state too. Jj has no ties to lakers. I wish people stop attempting to make this hire more then what it is which is the most ridiculous hire ever in nba history and it has to do with race clear as day too!!! I like jj but the truth of the matter is jj has never coached ever and no person has ever coached a nba team especially one like the lakers with no experience ever!!! Period point blank!!!

    No question about JJ bringing a lot of stuff to the table. But the expectations are just astronomical. And Kerr inherited a solid foundation in Steph, Klay and Dray, and a culture established in large part by Mark Jackson. If JJ can have a guaranteed 3 years to coach the Lakers regardless of results, then I'd have high hopes. But the trend is a yearly trial-and-error, hoping for some savior to turn an aging ship around.

    @@nbassasin8092 strictly speaking, anyone who makes it to the league is a great athlete. The usual connotation of the word super athlete would be attributed to a LeBron or Jordan. What I was getting at was that he never RELIED on his athleticism to get to the league but instead had to be mentally stronger than most of the league to make his place. Which is a good sign when considering what makes a good coach. Typically, super athletes tend to struggle teaching the game because it's hard to do what a super athlete can do if you're not one. Not all of course.

    @@brandonbottass oh I see, my bad I do agree with most of what you said, and you are right about him not relying on his athleticism, and generally him being below average NBA player when it comes to just physicality and being athletic but "super athlete" IMO is anyone who spends decent amount as part of the main rotation in the NBA, not just those who are among greatest players of all time from 6th man on team upwards, everyone is super atlete, sometimes even 7th and 8th man, because that is essentially only the 1% of 1% of 1% of all basketball players, no need to make it even more narrow

We can make all the predictions we want--and those predictions can be optimistic or pessimistic--but we actually have to wait until the thing happens to find out how the thing happens. Damn. Lakers hiring JJ as a head coach made me feel old as I can still remember seeing JJ play for the orland, bucks, clippers. Dayuum

    My favorite background quality of JJ is that he was the most hated guy in his NCAA days, yet he continued to cook. Had to transition into a role guy on the pro level, but he made the most of it without letting his ego get the best of him. He's head strong and won't let noise distract him. Now how good of a coach he is will have to be seen, but he has the character to stand up to the pressures.
