So hard not to like JJ. The kid might not be as sharp as Darnold yet, but you can see he has all the qualities he needs to develop into a star player. It's a cliche to say a player has "all the tools" but it's undeniably true of McCarthy.

@@MohammedKhaja-dn4qe Right now it certainly looks that way. It's not surprising though, Darnold has had a lot of time to perfect his craft and has crazy arm talent. It would be surprising if JJ's game sense and throws were already better than Darnold's.

@@HanukkahLewis Brady was special. He had all the intangibles to be great. Michigan football just doesn't open up the offense like other teams. Lloyd Carr was too conservative with the talent he had. He didn't turn Brady loose until his final game against Alabama. I still can't believe he wasn't the first QB taken.

Maye, Penix, McCarthy, and Williams, and milton were the QBs in the draft who had notably strong arms. Milton and Maye have absolute deep ball cannon arms. Caleb has the ability to throw off balance with great strength and accuracy. McCarthy and penix both have a ton of zip on the ball and have the ability to sling the ball into tight windows beating defenders. Honestly, I actually think we would have picked penix if Atlanta didn't pick him I know we offered a trade to go up for Maye, but I think we also had our eyes on Penix since I think we suspected the Giants might take McCarthy

Numbers never tell the whole story though, do they. We've just lived through an era of a QB who is a bit of a monster when it comes to numbers. Yet the stats sheet never show how many of those were in garbage time when the game was gone, or how his numbers went off a cliff in Prime time or in Playoff games. So far, JJ has done the only thing he should do. He's won everything in front of him. If he does that at the Vikings I couldn't give a damn if he's the 32nd best passer in terms of numbers in the NFL.

Thats Michigan football. Caleb, Michael, Bo, Jaden, and Drake would have been used the same way at Michigan. That's one reason why J.J. is the first five star to sign with Michigan in a minute. And he wanted to go to Ohio State! They've always been way too conservative but with a team like this one it made sense. In many years they would pound the ball even when they should be airing it out. Why throw it all over the yard when you don't have to? Especially when you have a QB who is money in crucial situations. J.J. was 17 of 22 for 278 yards (77%), 4 TDs, 0 INTs, and 16 yards per completion on third and 10 + yards to go. J.J. is the all-time pass completion percentage leader (67%) and had more pass attempts and better stats than Brady and Harbaugh.

@@glennpelton4887 If you swapped Penix amd Mccarthy, Michigan is still winning a natty and Penix is still slinging. Washington wouldn't be ranked. That's the difference. If a coach has a QB that can sling, then they're not putting up 160 yards in a natty. Also, his stats on what little attempts he had looked good cause he never threw it. The defense loaded the box to stop the run cause he's really not a threat.

  • @glennpelton4887

@@skimob05 It doesn't matter how much you can sling it at Michigan. You aren't throwing a lot. This year it made sense to not sling it. Why risk injury by passing the ball all over the place when you could just let your trusty QB to get you a first when it's 3rd and long? They needed J.J. for the home stretch. But not slinging it is why they miss out on 5-star QB's. They lucked up on J.J. Ryan Day fucked that up. He cost the Buckeye's a natty. That stacking the box plan didn't work out for anybody. All year teams stacked the box and J.J. made them pay. That's why Corum had 20 of his 26 touchdowns from inside the five. J.J. is the reason Michigan got inside the five. Penix would not have beaten Bama. Against Bama (who only rushed four) Michigan could not hold them. They were on J.J.s ass all day. Just like Michigan was all over Penix. Remember that result? But unlike Penix J.J. handled the pressure (17 of 27 for 221 yard, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, and 1 sack.10 completions went for first downs. Remember J.J. practiced against the #1 defense in the nation every day and was quite impressive. Although J.J. had more pass attempts and better stats than Harbaugh and Brady. Stats have nothing to do with what you do in the NFL. Two good examples are Tom Brady and Jim Harbaugh. That's why after you get drafted you get more coaching. We talkin about practice. You don't show up for game one in the NFL not having been shown what you need to get better at.
