Hated this rhythm section. Good players but bad for this music. Also thought that this arrangement sounded like a dirge.

It’s slower, but I thought when Zep played it live, even with Bonzo, and with Page sounding under rehearsed, it never sounded right. I agree Jones would have helped, because the rhythm section is a bit weak. And Page stayed in tune, many Zep versions halfway thru the song Page would be out of tune with Jones keyboards. Whatever. Really good studio song.

In the seven years since you wrote your comment, you may have found a live version of the Wanton Song somewhere on You Tube from the Page/Plant tours between 1995 and 1998, but if you have not found a decent version, here is the link to the opening of the 1995 Page/Plant show in London. It is the Wanton Song. I hope it brings back great memories. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHV_wdFrp5jWYs4.html Enjoy loud!

They played it at Knebworth before Bonham died. Live footage of that concert was released on their live DVD back in the early 2000s. I am sure you can look it up on KZread now with no problem, but back in the day that was a treat for diehard fans who were too young when they broke up. Side note, I was also lucky enough to see Page & Plant on the No Quarter tour…great memories!

Ron Dunbar Classic Page. Wrong note after wrong note. Falling over himself while he's smoking a cigarette and playing the guitar simultaneously. If you're into shitty live performances you've hit the mother load. The only thing good about the entire Page and Plant tour was Robert Plant. His voice hadn't changed much up to that point so he made the outrageous ticket prices worth it. Jimmy is a different story altogether. A complete disaster.

they were having fun and Roberts little smiles when Jimmy cut loose with his raw get down and dirty riffs thru the song tell the tale that he knew they were on and that the magic in jimmy's fingers was and he was into it, jp is the best no matter what, but when he's on , really on and letting it fly, no one can touch him, period , what's with the bozos dislikes on here, must be some tv. preacher from Texas !!

Robert changed lyrics in the carouselambra part. I was so shocked when I heard carouselambra came in, wondered how would Robert sing those lyrics with JP next to him.

I agree, I think it shows that Jimmy considers that slow middle section of “carouselambra” to be one of his favorite moments, musically, on ITTOD. I would agree with him. I imagine Robert changing them on his own, but if they did have a conversation about it then, yeah, pretty awkward… To unpack it: The lyrics in the middle section of “carouselambra” are believed to be Robert calling out Jimmy. The background is that during the 1977 North American tour Robert received word that his 5 year old son, Karac, had died of a virus. The tumultuous tour was cancelled immediately… Lyric: “I heard the word, I couldn’t stay… I couldn’t stand it another day” Robert immediately flew back to England, accompanied by Bonham, and tour manager Richard cole. However, jimmy page, JPJ, and manager Peter Grant along with groupies and other members of the entourage jetted off to exotic locations to continue partying… Page and Jones even missed the funeral service… Lyric: “where was your word, where did you go?” “Where was your helping, where was you bow” Other lyrics in that section could just be a reaction to Jimmy’s current personal state, and his dark mystical fascinations… “Dull is the armor, cold is the day” “Hard was the journey, dark was the way” Anyway, hope that answers you ;)
