Used to work at JJ's and I can personally attest that everything is PAINSTAKINGLY hand prepared every single morning. Most restaurants can show up an hour before opening flip on the lights turn on the stove and they're ready to start serving but we used to be in the store at 5am every morning for prep. To this day I will back JJ's 100% in a "best sandwich" conversation.

I worked at Jimmy Johns for a few years in my early 20s. They have the most intense corporate audits I've ever seen. They REALLY keep things clean and food fresh, they follow all the procedures, despite the staff all being teens and 20 somethings. It's really impressive, I was blown away while I worked there. I know that if I eat at a JJ's, it'll be spotless, clean food, clean floor, clean everything.

I agree with other reply. I don't think I've been to subway in over ten years. Jimmy John's might be the best chain sandwich shop and is at least in the discussion. Only reason I used to go to subway more was better price, but quality kept going down to the point i was done. My only complaint about jimmy johns is i don't go often, so i usually buy enough food for two people and eat it in one night regardless of telling myself I'll make two meals out of it. More of a compliment than a complaint 🤣

I literally ate at Jimmy Johns almost every shift (not everyday). I saw EVERYTHING that went on and it's all fresh, all good. Very impressive. Veggies and meats are all sliced in house. It's not that fresh, you slice every day but that doesn't get used until you go through the held stock from previous days. So you almost never get fresh meat or veggies. I also saw a manager one time tell a coworker to scoop a dying cricket out of the mayonnaise and wrap it back up.

@@skipfred I worked at a decently busy store but i've never personally seen meat or anything sit through more than two shifts (there are two shifts a day) so while you could get meat or cheese from the night before, you're never going to get it from over a day old. Again, this could just have been my store, but if i remember correctly this was policy. We threw out stuff if it was ever discovered older than 2 shifts. Same with veggies. I think the longest shelf life was the tuna but it was because of the ingredients and it still only could sit 3 shifts.

Helped open store #5 in Urbana back in '92. Jimmy came in for the grand opening and was working the line with the rest of us schlubs. Got to shoot the shit with him after the lunch rush, hell of a guy. Btw, "subs so fast you'll freak" was the eventual tagline winner, but "the best 9 inches you'll ever have in your mouth" was the employee favorite at the Lincoln Avenue store. Edit: store #3 in Champaign was in a strip mall with a bar/laundromat called Suds. I'd spend many a Sunday over there lol. But hey I would much rather get a little less food that is actually fresh rather than more that tastes horrible. Also if you never tried the kickin ranch it is great! I hear many people say the bread is too hard at JJ’s but I actually like it a lot and sure it takes a bit longer to to chew through it but that means I get to enjoy the sandwich for longer. JJ’s and Jersey Mike’s definitely score high on quality more than any other chains local to me.

I used to work at JJs and it was the best job I’ve ever had. Everything is made a very specific way down to the order you put the ingredients on the sandwich which took longer to learn but definitely leads to a better experience for customers. I had the opportunity to go through their training program in Champagne Illinois and it was such a great experience. You spend a week learning how to do every little thing and then have to past a test at the end of the week to become a certified Mayo master, I think I definitely leads to better management overall, I worked at three different stores over my career there and the only thing that changed was the people I worked with. During training they often told us that we should strive to be the best not the biggest and that definitely shows when visiting any restaurant. Highly recommend Jimmy John’s wether your a customer or looking for a place to work! The only reason I quit was to become a stay at home mom otherwise I’d probably be there until I retired honestly

I work at a Jimmy John's that opened a few months ago, and they are currently about to fire a quarter of their staff due to not that many sales coming in. And despite us being "overstuffed" we're always still somehow understaffed anytime a rush comes through. I really don't get why anyone would eat there, their food is very overpriced and not even that good. Most sandwiches will cost you $9-10 when you could go anywhere else for more food at a cheaper price. And don't get me started on how stingy we're supposed to be with portions and such (even on NAPKINS). The drivers also really get fucked over, making $4 less per hour than the rest of the staff (a dollar over minimum wage) while still having to do most of the work regular workers have to do. And no, tips don't really make up for it, best case scenario you'll break even, assuming you aren't using your car, in which case you're just borrowing the equity out of your car for money now because they only pay you like 53 cents a mile which comes nowhere near making up for gas + wear on your car. And they have a really shift system called split shifts, meaning you're going to be spending even more of your day around work with less pay. And they treat that like a "break," no bitch that's you having me clock out w/o paying me for two hours and coming back so you can have me for the next rush. And lately they've been cracking down on everything even more to increase profits, reducing the amount of food employees can get with employee meals, having us underdo portions, stuff like that. My coworker and I are trying to unionize with not much success, and unfortunately they slashed my hours into the single digits and I'm hoping they don't fire me. tl;dr Jimmy John's sucks just like every other company ever for its workers and its staff. What's even worse is that you're paying casual dining prices for a fast-food experience. I would not recommend going here.

The focus was on the sandwich -- especially the bread -- and trying to make it better, directly or indirectly. Jimmy was outrageous in the best sense of the term and the greatest majority of the support staff was top notch. He always wanted to exceed expectations as a franchisor. If I were to do things all over again, I would study business in college while working at JJ's and then purchase a franchise after graduation. Signing your own paycheck is a wonderful thing. Used to work at a jimmy johns and there are two main things that could warrant a "fall" video in the future. The first is inspire actually since every few months they introduce a limited time sandwich which while usually do good throws a wrench in things since their a lot more complicated than the normal menu, involves a lot more prep work, and made ordering produce for the week. Corporate audits of a thing so store so the general standard has been slipping but I don't remember if that was because of covid or even if that was a franchise specific issue. The second one is staffing, because JJs markets being freaky fast and being able to handle I higher number of customers a day then it's competitors so a fully sized store can need anywhere from 10-15 employees during lunch rush to be fully staffed, and that's not counting delivery drivers. When you don't, delivery and inshop times start to take a nosedive which does effect sales and the amount of people willing to come back.

These are my ratings on the mainstream sub shops: 1. Jersey Mike's 2. Jimmy John's (very close to Jersey Mike's, but JM's has the Mike's way toppings where they are super liberal with the olive oil and red wine vinegar and they have hot subs. Both have real fresh ingredients. 3. Penn Station 4. Quizno's (not many left anymore). 5. Firehouse (way overrated, but better than Subway. But that isn't saying much). 6. Shitway (oops I mean Subway). Between their non-tuna tuna and their nasty sugary bread and last year's cold cuts, not much to love there.

I went to the University of Illinois back in the early '90s and we would hit up Jimmy John's at least three or four times a week. One of the cool things that they used to do was sell day old bread for 25 cents. We would buy this up like crazy and end up making our own sandwiches later on.

Jimmy J's got me through many college nights...and some mornings! Their speed is unmatched and was perfect for late-night study and "study" sessions! I might be behind on you seeing these, but you should eventually take a look at Wizards of the Coast. It's been insane for the last sixish years.

I thought this was going to be "Why They Failed" there were half a dozen in my market for a year or two but they all closed down after the news about the CEO being a trophy hunter came out Rochester straight up boycotted them out of business around here. I've never seen one anywhere else since 2019. The tweet of him giving a thumbs up while sitting on a dead elephant was *tasteless*

I've never been in a Jimmy Johns. I've had them through work (maybe because they are cheap). I haven't been impressed but may be due to the basic sandwiches we've gotten. There is a Jersey Mike's which is fairly new and I've been thinking of doing that to see how it is.

I love JJ's. My typical experience "I'd like a number 7, no mayo" and then I hear a groan because the guy had already put mayo on the bread, 1 millisecond after I said "7". Freaky Fast!

I eat JJ a few times per week. Fast, cheap, and always quality simple sandwiches. Protip: you can buy 16 inch one-day-old loaves of bread for $0.50 each at any JJ. Super cheap, quality bread. Makes amazing garlic bread too. Usually I'll grab a loaf or two every time. My local JJ has gotten to know me so well that when they see my mobile order, they'll often just go ahead and thrown in a day old loaf no charge. Always super friendly staff.

I used to work at Jimmy Johns for 5 years doing delivery and on the line, and part of the reason why their delivery is so fast as that, depending on how busy the store is, we will literally make the sandwich as you are ordering it. By the time you get off the phone, your order is bagged up and already out for delivery. And the cleaning standards JJs has are very intense. Easily the cleanest store I've ever worked in. I can also attest that everything is fresh. Some employees come in even before the sun rises daily to get started on baking, and slicing for the lunch rush.

Ahaha. I’ve done that a few times where the customer is still trying to put their card into the reader when I handed them the sandwich. The corporate standard is all sandwiches are to be made 30 seconds or less.

Worked at JJ for a while as delivery driver. Tho they have moved away from "Freaky Fast Delivery" a bit, I always did my best to get orders delivered quick. Their ingredients are fresh (meat is never more than 3 days old from when they cut it, 2 for roast beef) Veggies were cut in the morning, always good stuff. Saved money by living off of my daily free sandwich for 7 months at the beginning (saved for a trip to Japan.) Always loved being freaky fast, fastest I had was ~5minutes and the woman was just in shock when I arrived. Did have the time where a customer was upset with my time, and made sure to get his order to him under ~8 minutes after that first fault from then until I quit. (He was a good tipper) The funny thing from this vid is that it says 25 cents was the delivery charge in ~1983.. that's all I got per sandwich I delivered in 2018.. (delivery fee was ~$2.00 base) :^3
