Lyrics:
This used to be a place
Where a man could find some work
Put together Holdens or a foundry job at worst
I can hear the noises coming
From the Karawara deep into the night
The roads were filled with kids playing after dark
Sent to get their fathers who were sitting at the bar
Eat, sleep, work, drink, that's all they ever did
They’re shutting down our town
They’re cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our town
Oh, they’re shutting down our town
I started raising hell before I came of age
Running from my past with clenched fists of rage
And I fought my way through, every other day
Never looking back
Everything I knew was back there on those streets
Every lesson learned kept me on my feet
But I can’t help thinking of the ones I left behind
They’re shutting down our town
They’re cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our town
Oh, they’re shutting down our town
Oh, they’re shutting down our town
They’re tearing out its heart
It wasn’t much to look at from the very start
Herded all together
From many different lands
The old folks stand around
While they’re shutting down our town
Woah, oh-oh
Yeah they’re shutting down our town
Woah, oh-oh
They’re shutting down our town
And I finally came back home
Found some peace at last
Was time to stop running from the demons of my past
Some that I remember
But the rest are changing way too fast
Yeah they’re shutting down our town
They’re cutting down our town
No more production line blue collar can be found
They’ll tear it to the ground
They’re shutting down our town
Oh they’re shutting down our town
They’re shutting down our town
You know they’ll tear it to the ground
Yeah they’re shutting down our town
Woah, oh-oh
They’ll tear it to the ground
Woah, oh-oh
They’re shutting down our town
Yeah they’re shutting down our town

I’m Irish , I was in Australia for ten months , worked with a chap called crazy Dave , he had a 5 litre v 8 Holden ute , at work he used blare out Stevie Ray Vaughan and cold chisel . Wow , once you hear jimmy Barnes it really doesn’t get any better. That was fifteen years ago. I’m in ireland now sniffling with emotion watching this video cause people have lost their jobs . How can Barnesy convey what these employees and his home town are going through so well ? Thanks to Troy Cassar Daly for writing this song but Jimmy how do you get better with every song and every note . I’ve read both working class boy and Man . Although Jimmy went the long way about making his life work for him and his family he really is such a great role model. Such a character and gentleman . A privilege to listen to . I hope him and his family have a great life . Thanks to crazy Dave for teaching me more about plumbing and introducing me to great music

I believe that a lot of the various VY/VZ models variations can be put down to Peter Hanenberger who was GM in the late '90's and early 2000's. He may have been German but he loved Holden and from what I've read he fought very hard to ensure Holden had lots of models off the Commodore platform _ Commodore sedan, wagon, coupe, ute, one tonner, Adventura, Crewman and the AWD system as well. He worked so hard for Holden, in fact, that apparently GM hated the sight of him, because he was so tenacious and didn't let up about getting a fair go for Holden and he kept going until he got what he wanted. Once the VE came and Hanenberger was gone all the variations stopped (except (sedan, wagon and ute). I read the following about him recently..."It’s not my General Motors any more, It’s [now] a very short-sighted company. For me General Motors was a global player. Today General Motors is shrinking to an American company with no foresight, which is in very bad shape, which has missed the market. I believe we now have a management in place with General Motors that has no foresight"

This song gets me every time, I worked at Fisherman's Bend for 23 years and also a decent stint at Elizabeth (Final inspection & validation) back in the early 2000's. Of course all things do come to an end eventually. But not as early as they need to through successive weak kneed governments that have consistently worked against Australian industry & interests by kowtowing to overseas interests.

@@wendymcgrath7561 The VE and VF Commodores were entirely Australian made and designed. Holden hadn’t sold Opels for over a decade. GM made Holden start importing Daewoo crap and rebadging it as Holden in the last ten years or so. Crap cars too that trashed the Holden name. They should have kept importing Opels, at least they were decent cars.

Far out the good old days are long gone. I am a ford fan and as much as I hate holden for our on track rivalry between the falcon and commodore I still respect them for the history, memories and even making this rivalry possible. I am so sad our country came to this. Stopping ford falcons and Holden commodore/Holden as a whole was the worst and saddest thing this country could have done. All those memories I will remember. Hot summer afternoons watching the v8 supercars on tv with my dad so eager to see the ford falcons beat the holden commodores, attending the sydney olympic park races and the eastern creek races, gonna miss it all. It just ain't the same anymore. Thank you Holden and thank you Ford for all the memories and hopefully one day we can see the return of these beautiful glorious Australian cares that I call family and hold a special place in my childhood. Love you ford and Holden!!!

Horizon585 true, I mean how do you expect a government liberal or labour to care about us when both of them accept bribes from communist China and in return they allow them to set up businesses here without paying tax, while we on the other hand have to. Then they build expensive alternative power structures like fields of solar panels or massive wind turbines, that evidently are not as effective as they claim and there is no battery in the world that can even store the electricity that a big city like Melbourne or Sydney needs. Also just recently as I’m sure we all know that this country has gone through a massive fire crisis that I admit has died down in intensity but is not yet gone, now the reason why it got that bad and big is because our government for a while has not allowed farmers or firefighters to conduct hazard reduction practices like cutting down some trees and burning away overgrown foliage that provides fuel for fires, so because we couldn’t do these things we simply had no chance to stop it early and it doesn’t help that our P.M had total lack of care about the possibility of fire to occur of this size and went for a vacation instead. Now all these things are very bad and it can’t continue, but it doesn’t have to be this way our only option is vote for a nationalist party and we do have a some but the leftist media have made it their mission to demonise nationalists like Pauline Hanson, she is probably our best bet and of course she isn’t perfect but how can we judge someone who hasn’t been given the chance to lead. So if you want change and a government that actually cares about the working class and the protection/future of our home that is Australia were going to have to vote for a nationalistic political party, witch one that is up to you and I suggest you do research on best candidates and the reality is if they can’t do it then no one can. P.s sorry for very long reply I just feel very strongly about my countries future.

I'm from an old mining and steelworks town where the young men were guaranteed a good wage and pension when they left school if they weren't necessarily the most academic and it was a part of the culture, as a result all the other local businesses like grocers, pubs, restaurants did well. Now all our trade has been sold off for cheap labour overseas and it's fucking criminal how men in suits are killing countries built by real men in overalls. God bless ya, Jimmy Barnes.

This is the Jimmy Barnes I remember and love, not the one who sang River Deep Mountain High (not to disparage that song but ... ). And you know, we've been sold out since the 80's when John Williamson sang True Blue. Or even prior to that. This song by Jimmy (written by Troy Cassar-Daley) is another sad reminder of how far this great country of ours has bent over backwards at the expense of our integrity. We once were the lucky country. We once were the free country. We were AUSTRALIA. But we aren't anymore. Hats off to you Jimmy for turning out something that makes us all realise what a sad plight this country is in. Let's not live under rocks anymore! We need to fix the mess that has been made of Australia, but the question is HOW? How, when we are lead by governments that are too ready to sell us down the river; governments that have been too ready to back off, bow down, forget what we stand for. How? This now brings to my mind an old classic song: To Dream the Impossible Dream...

As a car dealer, my family are holding our head up high, as we know we have some great products to sell, so thanks for the love. It's been tough, having Australia kick you in the guts, daily. Thanks Jimmy, much appreciated. Bless. #HoldenForever

It wouldn't be easy. I blame the general public just as much as the people in Canberra. Anyone who didn't buy locally contributed to the death of this nation's identity. I'll say it, I've got a falcon sitting in my driveway and proud of it. If owning one means your a bogan, so be it. Bogans can't afford Ford or Holden usually

We feel that pain here in NZ too mate, the old man built his company up from the ground around holden and ford parts and now the future looks different to how we thought it would 5 years ago... I hope you guys can adapt to the change, it isnt easy but holden was more than a car it was a attitude and I wont lose my holden attitude :)

What hurts the most is every living memory in Australia remembers growing up with a holden or a Ford, now there’s nothing left Australia literally grew up with Ford and holden Reminds me of the wee sketch in the paper of the dude driving off in an FX Holden switching off the factory lights for the last time

im a kiwi. nit me but my family went through this in the 80s. but was more devastating. in the 80s the meat industry collapsed. in my city alone two plants closed in 7 years. that was 4,200 jobs gone. i was born not long before. the second shut and grow up with the effects first hand. this song does put a tear in my eye.

I heard in the media here in the United States that RAM and Chevrolet has started selling their vehicles in Australia. They may still be GM as well with Holden. So they may be Holdens but just with a Chevy bowtie badge.

I honestly thought when I heard this on the radio that it was just a hokey barnsy cliche for a quick money grab. Now with the context of this video I have completely changed my mind. I absolutely love this song. Genuine goosebumps with all the old Holden factory footage and I felt a kinship with all other Aussies doing it tough in this day and age.

The first Holden bought a sense of Pride and Confidence into the Australian people. We showed the world we could build a really decent car & we were'nt just a backward outpost of the British Empire. The last Holden has had the reverse effect and does not bold well for Australia. We have shut down whole swathes of our manufacturing sector and it continues still.
