Bischoff cared more about keeping Hogan and Nash happy than keeping the audience happy .
Telling people not to switch channels because mankind was going to win the title on the other channel is the absolutely insane. You know what people will do? Change the channel. Wtf
I was in high school at the time, for me that was the last episode of Nitro that I would watch and just became a WWF and ECW fan
Nash really blew it by agreeing to this. His career was all downhill from here.
The finger poke of doom was the beginning of the end for WCW. We were all expecting the long awaited Hogan vs Nash match. Complete disaster.

Right but unfortunately it's in hulk contract to get the belt on him
@andrewft31

@@jahdorose8659no it wasn’t… if that was true he wouldn’t had dropped it to Sting, he got it back from Sting because was going on a break to deal with an addiction problem and then Hogan dropped it to Goldberg and he wouldn’t get it again until the Fingerpoke of Doom. That would be his 5th of his 6 title wins in WCW. So he was without the title for 6 months, he went into “retirement” to run for president. Keep in mind Hogan also agreed to put Billy Kidman over, which made zero sense but Hogan thought it would make money.

Kinda like someone being pinned by a forklift
If ever there was a title 2 describe the raw/nitro episodes of that January 4th, 1999, it would be called “The Monday Night Turning Point.” As raw never did get beaten in ratings by nitro (nitro wasn’t doing bad…but raw made the 83 week streak a distant memory.)!

Finger poke of doom = the begging of doom for WCW
Good interview
As a fan, I loved the poke but I was a huge mark for surprises and swerves. WCW even when they were all f'd up behind the scenes could at least surprise me. WWF never swerved me like WCW did. Scott Steiner with the emotional "retirement" speech with the back brace on to only heel up later again was awesome too.
The single stupidest wrestling angle I've ever seen.

Did you not watch dynamite last Wednesday? Or the week before? Or the week before that? On clips on youtube I mean cuz nobody watches that stuff live
So JR lived in a sundown town. I guess seeing Ern triggered those memories.
Wcw didnt know how to tell a clear and simple story, or how to finish it in a clear and simple way. It was all over the place, and the commentary team (who were legends) wernt able to add anything, only take it away by speculating too much. For example theyd say "whos hogan gonna pick?".. well that means we know hogan is going to pick someone, at that point all elements of surprise are gone. Wwe was clear and simple to follow, and executed in a flawless manner, the attention to detail such as the mics being loud enough with little arena echo, the one vision, the creative coming from the writers and not the wrestlers.. it was night and day better, although the wrestling in wcw with the sound of the canvas was probably more enjoyable in a meltzer like way. But ratings wasnt about wrestling, it was about whos more entertaining, who can I not miss this week. Quite often wcw would make cheap pops at wwe which came across as lack of confidence and that they were worried. When you look at the talent in wcw, hogan, nash, hall, goldberg, sting, flair etc.. with a clear vision and some serious attention to detail, they could have done bigger things for much longer.. having said that wwe was so good in 1999 that its almost impossible to survive against that. I still love wcw, but I always wanted to fix it, especially the production quality, and even though the ring sounded great, I couldnt imagine it working for a rock bottom or a stone cold stunner, the finish would feel wrong. I really couldnt imagine the rock in wcw, hed have been great ofcourse, but theyd have ruined him, they didnt know how to do big things well. It would be like putting tom cruise in a low budget movie with bad writers and poor equipment, hed be good, but hed be 1000 times better in mission impossible
The FPOD would have only worked if it had been Hogan himself to teaser Goldberg instead of Hall. That way they could have said Nash only got the belt because of Hogan so there was a mutual agreement to return the favour. But the fact that Hogan and Nash had feuded almost all of 1998 made the whole thing a joke regardless.
WWE fans got to see Mankind become the champion. WCW fans got to see Hulk and Nash disappoint an entire wrestling fandom.
I watched wcw from a kid in the 80's until it ended. I missed alot of good WWE.
I Immediately stopped watching after the fingerpoke. I tuned in when I heard about the Hogan heel turn, but I stayed for Hall and Nash. Nash needed to go over to end the NWO. The fact Hogan refused made it a disaster. No one admits it now, but the only person in wrestling more over than Nash at that time was Austin. They could have protected Hogan too, had his faction attack him for losing, get sympathy and than come back face like he did later.
I was there at the Georgia Dome and witnessed the Finger Poke of Doom live and it sucked! We were waiting to see Goldberg vs. Nash and got that crap! Then they have Elizabeth make up assault charges...Goldberg is arrested...comes out at the end only to be beat down...then the Atlanta Falcons come out to save the day! Witnessed the crap fest..first hand. Wanted my money back!
I loved the Fingerpoke of Doom then and I love it today. The Fingerpoke of Doom did not kill WCW. The Time Warner Merger did. Ratings went up after the Fingerpoke of Doom.

Thank You 💯
I saw that finger poke and turned wcw off and tuned in to the wwf because that really turned me off wcw
Misleading headline it should’ve been titled JR’s high school football days
That story about the black man is crazy and that's how things were and it wasn't that long ago
Agree but they had to give hulk the belt back
Half of the blame for that should go to Hogan because we all know about Hogan's backstage politics. The other half is for Bischoff because he would've let Hogan get away with m*rder if he could, and still has that mind-set to this day.
I didn't watch a whole lot of WCW after the finger-poke of doom.
just aew finna happen like wcw jr
13 months before this the WWE had Austin just hand over the IC title to The Rock then a few weeks later Shawn Michaels laid down and let Triple H win the European title and no one cried about them. The Finger Poke is the most overblown moment in wrestling. People didn’t get “upset” about until years later when the internet told them to

Except those were both minor titles, and they actually made sense in the storyline and character development (DX being DX and making Slaughter look like a dumbass, and Austin making Rock look like a heel with a title he didn't earn). The fingerpoke was for a main event/major title, made no sense in the storyline at the time, and contributed nothing to the characters development.

Didnt nash and Hogan like fake a fued for like 6 months? While DX faked it for 1 episode with shawn giving his European title to triple h cause shawn already had th heavy weight title.
Did JR just go off on a weird rant about segregation? How did that tie into the video subject? I'm very confused
I know that was the last night I watched Nitro.
Didn't Dx do basically the same thing with Shawn pinning Hunter When HBK was the world Champion and HHH had the European title? Like right around the same time?

It wasn't a highly built up and anticipated match that people wanted to see. Nor was it for the top title. And in context of DX putting one over on Sarge it made sense storyline wise. On every level it made sense where the finger poke of doom just fucked with the fans.

And the WWE had Katie Vick which was infinitely worse. In fact rhe WWE was even worse overall. But got a pass because because they had more T&A. Oh right the "attitude era". Give me a break.
