Jim Perrin Interviewed by David Roberts

From the 2005 BMFF Program: Often referred to as the U.K.’s finest climbing and outdoor author, Jim Perrin contributes regularly to British magazines and newspapers and has written several much-lauded essays and books. Nevertheless, Perrin took his time with the Whillans' story - 20 years, to be exact. Despite Whillans’ formidable climbing achievements, it’s the character of the man which is most intriguing. The savage-tongued hell-raiser literally fought his way out of his working-class background to challenge the upper-class British climbing clique of the time. In this long-awaited biography, Perrin beautifully portrays Whillans’ uncompromising personality, cruel wit, and ultimately tragic end.

David your interviews of climbers are fun to watch and listen to. They are sensitive and thoughtful. I remember you from long ago as my professor at Hampshire. I hope you keep doing this.

Don may have given up rock climbing but in 1976 he plodded his way up the West Rib of Denali. For me he was always great company and not surly at all. Mind you I'm from the Working class. "Did ya hear about the one about....." was always his line.

I can't comment on the remarks contained in "Jac's Sisters Blog", though I have read it. Speaking personally, I can say that I find this man's insights, inspirations and observations to be near-sublime in content. His books have supported me through many dark times.

It maybe just me, I liked Mr Perrin’s work many years ago. However watching him now with a more mature eye, I actually struggle to differentiate truth from fiction.

I never trusted a female member of the medical profession ever again after I met one of the women detailed (indirectly with no name mention) in ‘Jac's Sisters’ Blog’. I wrote at the time, describing my experience, to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ (UK radio programme) and was informed that it was likely to be featured on the programme - but it never was. It was 20 years later - after a random visit to a large city library - that I discovered what happened. Someone had left several books of well-known climbers on one of the desks. It was only after I went to put the books back on the shelves that I recognised the names and discovered ‘Jac's Sisters’ Blog’ - and the truth of what probably happened to me on that June evening in 1998. I was absolutely appalled and still shocked when I contemplate how one 2 hour meeting could have turned my life (and others) upside-down for over 15 months.

Jim Perrin is one of the most intelligent climbers and climbing writers in the UK. I first met him when he was still a schoolboy and spent many weekends climbing with him in the Peak. We met frequently until I moved to California. I also knew Don Whillans pretty well and Perrin's book is accurate.

You can't have read Jim's book then. He is full of praise for his early climbs but also his drinking and atrocious attitude to women and many fellow climbers as he grew overweight and bitter. A well written and I believe honest appraisal of a complex character.
