It may be surprising but back in the day the word concussion was never used. In my day it was called “ you got your bell rung” no one ever missed games because of head injuries. It seems so crazy now.

What now seems reckless was understandable years ago b/c we didn’t know better. I ‘played’ HS football and enjoyed so much played mud bowl - tackle football w/o pads/helmets. Now it would be crazy b/c research is clear on link between concussions & CTE.

Totally agree. The phrase "got your bell rung" was used often on hard hits. Some guys took that as a badge of honor that they played hard. No one knew the science behind it then.

I'm a Bears fan watched that full game here on KZread. My favorite part is at the Dallas Endzone, a Dallas QB pass gets tipped by one Bear, caught by another Bear and just walked like 1 yard into the Endzone for a touchdown. What annoys me is I consider myself old (42), yet I'm not old enough to remember anything about the '85 Bears because I was only 3 or 4 at the time.

The reality of CTE is that you don't get better, you have to learn how to deal with it as much as you can. I have it and have tried to kill myself because of it. You hear voices, see dead relatives standing right in front of you. You get to a point where you don't know what's next. NFL still doesn't do anything for head injury prevention.

Maybe so players don't see the forces that they are being hit with?? The NFL doesn't do anything for player head protect, they'll spend 100 million in ads saying they spent a million on players safety. It's bullshit window dressing. I'm and old guy that morns the loss of so many on that team. I almost cried when Payton made the live announcement of his cancer. I prayed for him every night, but also all the others that are now suffering for their life and aggressive play that made them the best. I will continue to pray for the souls we've lost from that team as well as those that are still here. The NFL and Players Association owe players more than just a minimum pat on the back and a bottle of pain pills. These teams that are building Billion Dollar Stadiums need to be spending Billions of dollars on players that have given their lives, literally, to the game. Thanks Jim. My 17 year old son is 300lbs and has never played sports. The school has tried really hard to get me to let him play but it will never happen. I don’t watch sports and refuse to see my talented strong son play a game that will ruin his body. He has been training under me since he was 7 to be a blacksmith and welder. He will live a good healthy life because I have protected him from being coerced into sports and instead have passed on my skills to him which bought us the farm we own outright. He eats food we grow without pesticides or gmo seeds and knows how to work the soil without depleting it. All our food animals are fed stuff we grow and he has also learned to build his own bows and arrows both stone tipped and steel, and is a better hunter than I ever was because I started teaching him young.

No other game I know has that paramount dynamic, team effort. All this from someone that suffers many of these malady. I gave up the game in college because I nearly killed a guy, a QB ... I would add few of my peers played with my reckless zeal and the greater portion of former players never suffer these ill effects. Yes I remember William the refrigerator Perry. I moved from Chicago in 2006. I wasn't into college football. Alabama and Auburn. So I was being pressured who's side I was on...I said The Chicago Bears...I hollered it. It was without thought. But Roll Tide it is. 😁

This just in, hitting your head repeatedly is bad. People thought maybe it wasn’t a big deal but turns out, yes, it’s a big deal. Your head (brain) is remarkably important. It’s weird because you’d think the opposite but no.

“I didn’t know getting hit in the head was bad for my brain.” Saying that makes somebody question whether the person had a brain in the first place. What normal thinking person would think getting hit in the head numerous times was not going to have consequences. All you have to do is look at boxers, the term punch drunk comes to mind. Punch drunk doesn’t mean drinking too much punch either.

It’s the price you pay if you want to play football, box, or any other heavy contact sport. You are not obligated to play the sport. We all know the dangers of repeated head trauma. People will always play for the fun, money, fame. But, after it’s over, you really can’t blame anyone but yourself for deciding to play.

I played football and got the crap beat out of me. I knew how dangerous the sport was before any studies came out. I assumed the risk and I would not blame another for any injury I suffered. These pro football players had to know that lingering effects from injuries were a possibility, including brain damage. From now on, the NFL should have all players sign a waiver of liability stating the potential for serious injury and/or death could occur as a result of playing the sport.
