Straight Ahead came out at the perfect time and helped me through a bout of depression as a teenager. Thanks Jim and Pennywise

Lucky to see them play the straight ahead album in its entirety for the 20 year anniversary in Melbourne Australia just before covid hit. Classic album, tremendous band.

Fascinating how the name came about. I bought my first Pennywise album, land of the free, when I was in college at 19 and couldn’t turn that album off. 22 years later and I’m still listening and now my two boys are getting into Pennywise. I was always being put down and pushed away when I was younger, but when I discovered Pennywise and punk rock, it really helped me find my own path and move away from all the negativity I was surrounded by and do my own thing and not care what people thought and still like it now. Thank you Jim and all the Pennywise crew for your music and passion for living your own way all the time.

Great interview bro!!! Gotta say I didn't know pennywise got their name from PENNYWISE!!!!! But definitely cool how Jim explained why.... I didn't know about your recovery journey... Congrats on 11 years.... I'll be 3 years sober this month and 5 yrs achohol free in August.... I've got a band called 3rd setting and we're in San Angelo TX... We've got a Facebook and at some point we'd love to play somewhere else in Texas.... We've been playing in San Angelo for many years under a few different names and we were a misfits cover band for a while too.. Rock on! 🤘

Awesome interview. Straight Ahead was my introduction to what i've always called "California hardcore", genre (for me) being composed only by Pennywise, NOFX and Guttermouth, in oposition to the darkier and non-relatable (to me) NY Hardcore Madball, Sick of It All or Bad Brains. And Jim seems to be a really cool guy, I love the video where he covers "Sorrow" on his yt channel. Much respect to the man!

Thanks for this. PW was a huge part of my life...I grew up in the 90s. I remember Kurt Cobains death but I had no real feeling about it. When Jason Thirsk died, I think I had found out through a Thrasher magazine ad...for Full Circle. It really effected me...and how I viewed life.

Loved it! Jim comes off as such a wise man, to no surprise. I saw them play for the first time in Tacoma, Wa Punk in Drublic tour last summer, and even though it was only a 40 min show in support of NOFX the energy was off the hook and I'd say I enjoyed it just as much as NOFX (who I'd already seen once like 20 years before). And no, not all the records sound the same. Straight Ahead sounds a lot different than the self-titled debut album, yet both are classics

I like those bands but I never could get into NOFX even though they got a couple catchy songs. These guys put out albums with almost every song a good hit. I might see them not sure they are opening for murphies who are meh. Pennywise is way better.

Super stoked to be going to Saturday’s show in Portland! NOFX, along with Pennywise, TSOL, Subhumans, Co Defendants, and some others. The local Killer Burger restaurant is creating a NOFX burger and the band is doing a VIP contest for the person who can think of the best NOFX pun name for the burger. The best name I’ve seen yet is Don’t Call Me White Castle 🍔 😂🤘🏻

I graduated from HS in So Cal in 1995. I liked Pennywise but unfortunately they became a jock punk band, more than a skate punk band. Bro Hymn was played by every football player. The jocks loved NOFX as well. Bad Religion wasn’t a jock punk band as much. I wouldn’t even listen to Rancid at first because of MTV videos. Of course I’m grownup now and appreciate all these bands with no longer caring about those hangups. But it’s interesting that Pennywise was the one punk band every jock loved

Jocks almost ruined Hatebreed, PW, and Offspring for me, too. All the way down here in Houston, lol. Fortunately they were all vacationers and I'm a lifelong punk rock resident, so they ultimately bounced

Didn't like NOFX and I think NOFX should be opening if anything. Pennywise and bad religion sound so close they would be a trip to see live. Pennywise stays true to their sound even with their newer stuff. Land of the free and the expirement album they did with Teglas are the 2 best. It was a interesting sound all high energy.
