Gregz0r I love the pre-salary cap and pre-free agency era, when teams had to draft well but were allowed to keep their talent despite the high price. Now it's watered down mediocrity but hey it makes my Patriots win because all the other teams usually suck.

The Bills had the most overrated coach in NFL history-Marv Levy--the Bills won because of the team GM Bill Polian assembled--it had nothing to do with Levy---I have always believed that if Chuck Knox had had the personnel that had been handed to Levy--the Bills would have won many Super Bowls

This was the first game in NFL history to not have a single punt.

This was my perfect SB. I love both teams and we came so close. To think, if the 49ers had held up their end during the Bills run, we have had this match up. Oh well, we have this instead.

I remember watching and hoping we didn’t get blown out. And at the end before the drive started I was thinking hold them to a FG. Neither team could completely stop the other without a turnover.

One would assume that there was absolutely no defense in this game, but both of them were actually quite decent. Lots of big hits and three takeaways each. What an exciting game this was. I remember it vividly.

Well, I said the defenses were decent, not great, which is a statement i stand by. 1100 yards, no punts, and the score was only 34-31. High score, but nowhere near what the outrageous production would indicate. The D's did show up.

Sometimes both defenses play well, but the opposing offenses play even better. Sometimes it happens dot both teams. Sometimes in the same game. All that happened on this one, doing sufficient damage to each’s defensive stats to make both look more mundane after 16 games than they really wear in most of the other 15.

Now this was one hell of a ballgame. Don't know why these guys took the trouble to upload last year's lame KC-Houston playoff game, but this one was a great battle and I'm happy it's on KZread. Two great offenses/QBs duking it out

The Bills started their run of SB appearances in 1990 and ended it in 1993. The 49ers played in the SB in 1989 and 1994. They were that close to meeting for the title.

This game was awesome!

Crazy that they didn't meet in the SB with them combining for 11 conference title appearances in a seven year span from 1988-1994. Especially since they were both in those title games in 1988, 1990, 1992, and 1993.

I covered this game as a stringer/reporter for the long defunct 1st national radio network 'SportsFinal' out of Boston...I wish that I had my post game interviews still I'd try to find a way to attach it to this coverage...classic game!

Techno Bowl and Super Tecmo Bowl were the ultimate back then.

Only repeated a handful of times, all of them in the 2010s with the Packers doing it twice against the Bears and the Saints in 2014.

Cofer the choker strikes again. He kept S.F. out of 91 playoffs single handedly.

Max Heinem except he was the reason they lost a few of them. He had like 6 turnovers in one game against the Cowboys. 5 pro bowlers on defense 3 offensive lineman and 3 pro bowl receiving options. Kelly was overrated but the Bills were a stacked team.

man i forgot how otherworldly thurman thomas was. 49ers defensive weakness to runners would do them in later that year.

There were no punts in this game if I remember. How many Pro Bowlers are there in this game? They're up and down the rosters. You can't build teams like this in the era of free agency.

Yeah that sucks man I hate this salary cap and free agency era, especially with expansion and players retiring early now because of head injuries. I'd rather see 6 great teams than see 25 bad ones and 6-7 okay ones. Bills 49ers Cowboys Redskins Giants were all stacked. Oilers were really good too with like 9 pro bowlers at one point (Moon, Munchak, Matthews, White, Slaughter, Childress, Fuller to name a few).

I remember not seeing this game. I'm in the Dallas Fort Worth area and remember being really pissed off because they aired the Houston Oilers game or some other wack game and not this one. This game was a heartbreaker. I remember virtually every game from '85 to '99

Nfl channel needs to make every single game available. Like week 16 Monday night football 1997 49ers vs Broncos...ect

Biggest mistake NFL has made on rules: changing them to try and have all games have offence like this. They forgot that this is entertaining only when both offences are this good and play this well.

Sometimes I wonder if I was plopped in the early 90's what team I would have been a fan of without any outside bias. I could easily see the Bills being that team.

This is no punt game,I remember this game.

I was at this game. What a back and forth game. I remember what a great environment this was. It was awesome to see so many other Buffalo fans there.

My two teams are/ were The Buffalo Bills (my home town) and The S.F. 49ers. Between 1989 and 1996, either The Bills or The 49ers played in 7 Superbowls in a row, but never against each other. The Bills during this period, owned The NFC during The regular season, 17-0! I got a ticket for this game from a friend, and had a good seat, near the field by the 9ers bench. I could see Montana and Young on sidelines, both suited up. Unbelievable game! Only game in football history that neither team punted the ball. This was my Wish Super Bowl. Niners were in field goal range to tie it. Over 1000 yards of offense. Young had 1st down inside the 30 . Plenty of time! 24 to 13 at halftime for 9ers. 1:08 left and 2 times out. 46 yard punt to tie it. Missed it! Wide right! Bills win in San Francisco! During the Bills 4 Superbowls in a row, for two years, they were Wild Card team. Norwood! Should have hit that field goal against The NY Giants. Buffalo,mstill to this day, has never won any World Championship. Talk about Cleveland; talk about The Red Sox, or the Astros. How about NEVER won a World Champ. Never.

Hard being a Bills fan. Remember, the only member of The Bills in the Pro-Football Hall of Fame was……OJSimpson. And to make it to 4 Superbowls in a row, and lose all 4…heartbreaking. I’m still not over it. If only Norwood would have made that 3 pointer against The NY Giants…

It was a great game. With two of my favorite Qbs (Steve Young & Jim Kelly) , for a moment I thought it would be a superbowl preview I would have loved to seeing it but unfortunately this was the close enough as it got to a superbowl

I think the best part about this matchup was niether one of them (Jim Kelly and Steve Young) were the best players on their teams. The 49ers and Bills were stacked with talent. I'd say Rice was better player than anyone on this field, followed by Bruce Smith, and then Thurman Thomas, the real offensive leader and MVP of Bills offense.

Thurman is the most underrated RB in NFL history . Even with the gold jacket , he deserves more respect , incredible , once in a decade talent

I remember watching this game back then.

This is amazing, but one complaint. I'm surprised the NFL didn't take care of the video tape for this game. That's why the video quality is poor because they didn't take good care of the video tape.

Ed Sandoval we also attended that game one weird thing about our tickets was that they read game 3 and it was only the second game of that season.

Watching this game I feel like some french fries 🍟 and some beer batter chicken nuggets!

1 of only 2 games in NFL history to not have a punt, and it was the 1st one in history, the other was just a couple of years ago...

I remember watching this - great game. They played that song "Unbelievable" in NBC's intro to it. And it was.

What a weapon Steve Young was. A QB that could scramble & hit his targets.

The Buffalo Bills would have won at least one of those Super Bowls if Walt Corey was NOT their defensive coordinator! His defenses were always way too soft!

These refs were awesome. Why can’t we have this now?

Although they were relatively weak against the pass, the 49ers nevertheless had a reasonably good defense in '92 -- particularly in terms of points allowed. So for Buffalo to move the ball up and down the field against them virtually at will must have been a huge wake-up call to the 49er coaching staff. Is it safe to assume that the Cowboy coaching staff studied this game in order to learn what *not* to do when defending against the Bills' offense?

Early season games in multipurpose stadiums: guys must have hated playing on those infields.

What i didn't remember was the irony of them winning that game because the other team's FG kicker missed a 47 yarder, WIDE RIGHT! Good God they were a fun team to watch.

Montana still played really well for the Chiefs but he was brittle and everyone knew it. The Niners used to let go of famous players past their prime to bring in new talent back then (Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice being other obvious examples).

@@tomd1434 Who told you that? Montana injured his elbow in practice during the 1991 pre-season and had to have elbow surgery and why he missed all of the 91 and 92 season except for the 2nd half of the last reg season game in 92 he played.

After all of that offense from both teams, how fitting that the Bills win on a field goal missed wide right. I'm looking forward to another decade where both of these clubs are the best in their conferences, but let's hope we finally see them meet in the Superbowl this time around.

These 2 teams really mirrored each other... Kelly: 22/43 403 yards 3TD 1INT Young: 26/37 449 yards 3TD 1 INT Both teams had 2 100 yard receivers. The X-factor in this game was probably Thurman Thomas. 85 yards rushing 1 TD and 94 yards receiving 1 TD. Losing Rice early didnt help the 9ers. Overall a game for the ages! Shame these 2 teams never played each other for a Chip....

49ers also lost Brent Jones very early in the 1st quarter. Backup wide receivers Mike Sherrard and Odessa Turner had to step up, and did. Terrific game.

i have a feeling that young is the most hit qb in nfl history, even without the ball he still takes hits, he had a lot of concussion anyway.

Two rare occurrences a regular season game between the Buffalo Bills and the 49ers and a Jerry Rice concussion wow this a treat.

First NFL game I ever went to. One of the most memorable. And the incredible thing was all the yards the 49ers piled up w/o Jerry Rice for most of the game because he left in the 1st quarter w a concussion. But back in those days, the Niners could pretty much throw anyone out there as a WR and would still have success

Product Reviews That's because the 49ers thoughout the '80s and '90s had two of the most accurate QBs of all time operating an offense that was custom made for their skill sets. RIP Bill Walsh, the master (but not the inventor) of the short passing offense.

Why? SF allowed Buffalo to score 34. Dallas in the Super Bowl allowed 17.

Kinda wish this were the Super Bowl that year. '92 49ers may have been one of the top five teams of the '90s that DIDN'T reach the Super Bowl. They might've been just as deserving as the '98 Vikings.

Not sure why Haley and Lott got traded during that off season prior to 92, but they weren't the same contenders after this season. And in 94 they had no long term contracts to build on the franchise legacy. The Niners just completely collapsed and never been the same

FOR GOD SAKES.... post the GOD DAMN 1994 NFC Championship between the 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys
