Jim Green Takes on Red Wing Heritage With the Baobab

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Jim Green Baobab goes up against the likes of Red Wing with their first "Heritage" boot.
The Jim Green Baobab is a bit of a mutt, being a combination of their flagship Razorback and the African Ranger I reviewed last year. At $229 the Baobab is the most expensive boot in the Jim Green range, but still FAR less expensive than comparable boots from Red Wing, Danner, or Courtney. Jim Green maintains their position as one of the best values in work boots today!

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well and allows you to own less and own better.

Jim Green just announced that they are working on a more formal version of their baobab boot. The new uppers will include a natural and chestnut coloured vegetable tanned leather. They have yet revealed what outsoles will be used but they promise a more formal look.

I have used these boots hiking in both the white mountains and just did a grueling hike of My Katahdin. These by far are the most comfortable and durable boots I’ve worn for hiking in rugged terrain. I will never buy another pair of Salomon or any other brand for hiking boots. If you’re on the fence just get them. They fit perfectly and not one blister.

You:re right, no blisters. I drive for UPS so I'm in and out of the truck constantly. The razorbacks are kinda hard underfoot for that work. But the Baobab and any of the African Rangers are pretty much perfect for delivery jobs.

I've been working in these since they came out in the USA. They feel great on a ladder and fine in sand. Cement is fine as well. I have skinny ankles and they are a little wide at that area. The tongue slides to the side on me because of this. The weight is fine and handle well on shingle roofs. The leather feels quality and I have had no problems with water seeping in to the boot. At this cost point I'm nothing but happy with them.

If you have a pair of African Rangers, the toe box is very similar to those. In the African Rangers you can get a bit more wiggle room since there is leather surrounding your toes. If it is a long day in the field, I can feel a tiny bit of the steel toe caps rub on my pinky toes. On field days, I would alternate between Keen and Wolverine Wide steel toe boots, since I bought the Jim Green's (and Dr. Scholl's inserts) Steel Toes I never went back to the other boots.

Personally, I found the Razorbacks far too tight. I ended up returning them. The combination of the tighter toe box and my preference for quality shoe inserts with more padding gave my toes no room at all to move, and they felt too constrictive. If I were to get them again, I think I'd look into going a half-size up. The African Rangers fit true to size and aren't tight at all. The only problem with them is the sole is not great in snow or slick mud. Hopefully the Baobab will be a good Goldilocks solution for me.

This is a great video- just bought these for my wife. The comfort and utility are going to match perfectly with her preferences. That being said, I am looking into the AR8 because it seems more rugged. I want to do a lot of rucking and hiking in a boot that I can wear all the time since I live in the mountains. The AR8 seems like another best bang for buck boot being an extension of the razorback, which sounds perfect for me. Please review the AR8, especially for us guys who want a boot strictly for hiking and outdoors work! Also, Jim Green says they donate these boots to rangers, who use them extensively, so another great reason to review it!

I wish the African rangers were a bit taller in the toe area, or the construction was done slightly differently in the area where the toes flex (it could also be that I got the wrong size). If I use insoles that are from medium to higher thickness then a corner piece where leather is overlapped jabs into my big toe. Using a thinner insole fixes that issue though (one that’s barely 3 mm in the forefoot). The boots have an amazing grip on asphalt shingles, I helped family put a roof on a shop they were building and I was able to run around and jump around the roof really quickly without any concerns about slipping.

However I feel it's possibly more fitting on use on all terrain than flat hard floor. 3 months of regular use mainly on hard flat floors (12hrs per day ), big toe bone imprint on veg tan insole is still minimal, puting a lot more pressure onto the sesamoid bones. Possibly something to do with the hard fibre-board layer below the vegtan insole. Nevertheless, there's no blisters from day1 but I will need to wear longer to fully break in this boots.

I've seen looked at a Jim Green and think, "that looks really good", but that's really the charm for me. It brought back memories of good old ugly work boots just lasts forever and such a joy to use. Most boot makers went where the money is and go fashionable after decades of success at the cost of quality. It's inevitable. Unfortunately like pickup trucks, the fashionable priced out the practical, so those who needed the features face increasing cost on their trade tools or in another way to increase price, they simply reduce the quality of the product.

Hey I’m new to your channel and I love your reviews! Being from Winnipeg Canada we need some good clothing for the drastic weather changes and the extreme cold we get at times! Wish I found your channel sooner. Lol. Have you ever had a chance to review Tough Duck? There a local brand that has been in business for a long time and make really good work clothing! Just wish they made boots

Welcome! I have a very close friend who moved to Alberta and works with the native tribes there. Tough Duck has made an appearance or two on my channel, mostly as a good alternative to more expensive brands. I compared their vest to Filson a while back, and there are a few other items I really want to check out this year. Welcome to the channel and warm greetings from the states!

I'm currently wearing steel toe razorbacks for work. The main reason i still wear them is that they are the widest steel toe in my size. I really don't care about the looks and there is a lack of comfort which is slightly rectified by dr scholls. I want that sole, but i question a narower toe.

I custom ordered the Baobabs to be made in the same last (STC) as the Steel Toe Cap Razorbacks & African Rangers. I also replaced the inserts with Dr. Scholl's inserts in that pair of Razorbacks. I didn't have to put in new inserts in the Baobabs as they were great without it. Worth every dollar.

You said the toe box is wide. In Thorogoods I have to buy a 12ee, Danner Pronghorns a regular 12 is good (their last is wider across the ball of the foot). would these Baobabs be wide like the Danner?

If you do get the Shoellies order a half size up, as they are narrow at the toe box.

I have to admit I like the look of these. A bit on the spendy side but still good. I also like the waist area. I hate narrow waist on boots and shoes because for my feet that is pretty much the widest part of the foot. So when a boot or shoe has a narrow waist they can be some times painful. So going by what you are saying these should be great.

1:25 What on earth is a "veg tan leather lasting board"? Does it mean that its got a leather insole? From what I've read, the Razorback has a synthetic insole, so maybe this is the distinction that's being made?

I love Jim green because of the width being perfect. my red wings needed to be broken in and were on the narrow side. Any way the only issue I have had with Jim Green in the convex sole. It feels odd stepping down as the middle toes and behind the middle toes, the ball of the foot touch the ground but the big toe and the pinky toe are basically floating. Now when I did talk to Jim green about it they were willing to fix it and they said it was not the way it should be but watching their you tube channel and closing looking at the soles I can see the convex on almost all of them.

I've been wearing mine a few weeks now. They're still around an E width. They don't look wide, but they are. I'd say the usual Jim green is something like an EE, these are only slightly narrower. Still much wider than your average boot.
