Dave has always gotten criticized for thinking he's smarter than every booker yet never booking an actual wrestling promotion. AEW is the first time him and a booker have agreed on like 99% of how modern wrestling should work. So now, whenever AEW gets criticized, Dave needs to defend it or else his vast knowledge of wrestling looks fallible. In essence, AEW is an extension of Meltzer's reputation in the wrestling bubble, so he always gets super defensive when it gets criticized. He's not a paid shill for AEW, he's its biggest simp.

This is one of the funniest segments on the Drive Thru I’ve heard in a while. Dave is fervently defending Tony’s shit show, making Bryan Alvarez of all people seem sensible. All the while Jim and Brian are cackling in the background. Pure gold.

The ending part had me howling, when Alvarez told him real sports have the 30min built in and Dave says “AEW should do it” and Alvarez just screams yes!

It's funny how Dave is basically saying Tony is kayfabing the time overrun. Wrestling isn't a sport in that way. It's scripted. Imagine if someone told you to actually get PTSD and schizophrenia for an actors role. Sometimes, kayfabing for realism is a bad idea. Not only is AEW losing out on viewership because it doesn't work around the overrun, but viewers aren't even seeing the full main events unless they are watching live. That's terrible for business even if the show sucks or is amazing. Imagine having to work or sleep and then the next day you sit down and get something to eat. You pull out a beer. Just in time for the main event. And then the show stops after someone just took a clothesline out of nowhere.

I only watch AEW. I don't have time to watch WWE, IMPACT, AEW, NJPW, AAA and all the other promotions. I got stuff to do. In all those I prefer AEW and that's why it's the only one I watch. I'm not a hardcore fun but I like how AEW does stuff, not all the time, but I like it. Most importantly, I like the roster.

LETS GO I GIVE YOU SOME EXAMPLES: Dave Meltzer: "They (AEW) are cold, boy are they cold and how to change that? Man, that's hard to do... Edge there (at Collision last night) and it didn't move a lot of tickets. Edge is a good performer and he's a good talker and everything like that but it's not (C.M) Punk as far as a gamechanger" From Wrestling Observer Radio last night, while previewing the Tuesday Dynamite/NXT head-to-head on Tuesday. He says AEW have a good card for Tuesday but WWE are loading up NXT and AEW are cold right now. He says he expected Cody but didn't expect John Cena and the Undertaker on NXT. He says this doesn't matter in the long-run though because there was a head-to-head NXT and Dynamite last year in similar circumstances and they both loaded up the show and it had no longer-term effect after that week. He says it's going to be hard for AEW to change how cold they are right now. He says it's not the end of the world, they should get a good TV deal, he "doesn't worry about their future and all that but to get it back to where it was a year ago will be very difficult". He says Salt Lake City, where they were for Collision last night is a very bad market for them and didn't get big ticket sales there when they were hotter. But it was only about 2500 people and Edge didn't move numbers at the end. // Another meltzer quote: That's my thoughts on AEW right now. Again, they built a company on the idea that they were not going to be WWE and that they were going to be fan-friendly and they should be judged by that standard. It ended up all coming out and it made New Japan look stupid. It's not just New Japan; All Japan, NOAH or any independent group. On any independent show when a named guy is pulled from their show they go right on the internet and they tell you. They'll say "this guy is pulled from the show", whether they give you the reason or not is one thing but they will tell you. I just think AEW should live up to the standard of at least second level pro wrestling. BRO so tell me what is this... This is real critique so dont tell these fake news that cornette always going to drop but just read how much he critiques AEW. I can post you 100 other examples

I went to Smackdown last week in Brooklyn and not only did they end on time- but they managed to fit two in-house main events in. The whole event ended just before 10:30pm while NYC transit still had express services available. You mean to tell me WWE can do a live tv show and two extra matches in two in a half hours….but AEW can’t either cut segments or shorten their matches so that they can end on time? 😂

I beg you. Please do more of this. Hearing you laughing over this conversation was the highlight of my week.

Agreed! I've watched NJPW semi regularly in recent years, so I'm familiar with most of those guys that AEW being in. But even to me, AEW does absolutely nothing to explain why these guys are supposed to be a big deal (then usually books them in a pointless match which makes people think "why should I care about this guy?")

To be fair AEW's extremely niche audience is also the same extremely niche audience whose entire life revolves around New Japan so it makes sense they wouldn't try to actually explain who tf these people are when they bring them Stateside. Their audience already knows who they are and will throw babies in the air over em and they don't care if anyone else knows who they are bc they obviously don't care if anyone else WATCHES their show.

I'm amazed the dude has any friends because if a friend of mine spoke to me like that once I'd think twice about hanging out with them anymore in the future. Pro Wrestling is not exactly a sport, you can end it on time and to say otherwise is just Dave protecting AEW like he always does. With the losses in money this year, Dave hasn’t covered it with any real journalistic integrity like he would with other companies. He kept pushing the narrative that AEW has a billion dollar evaluation and that they could get a billion dollar tv deal. He never once said who would buy AEW at the price or any real, credible financial source that said AEW has that value or would get that tv rights deal. Just another example of his reporting being inaccurate to try and push the AEW success narrative. I believe that he believes he can sway billion dollar companies with his yellow journalism to invest in AEW at a high price…. With losing money every year, long term injuries to their roster, nda issues, lack of sponsorship revenue, corporate reshuffling, bad press, low tv ratings and lack of a market place identity the value of AEW maybe at its lowest point just as they go into negotiations.

The condescension from Dave is infuriating. He's just so dismissive. "You're not a sports fan." I would've reached through the computer and throttled him.

Yeah it’s made even worse when his own logic isn’t even consistent. “OMG why can’t you see this?! NXT doesn’t miss the overrun because they call the network! But AEW can’t do it because it’s like a sports event. And their matches are long because they don’t want them to go 5-7 minutes! But it’s the fans’ responsibility because AEW doesn’t know when the matches will end”! 🙄

I do because after work I always work out at our gym at our office and by the time I get home the Met or Penguin game is always in progress so I DVR it. Got the feeling this is the case for alot of other ppl as well. What a condescending douche Meltzer has become

The funniest part was after like 10 min of arguing, Dave agreed with Alvarez only to backtrack

That's what makes me laugh at Dave being so intentionally obtuse. Wrestling is scripted unlike live sports. If your wrestling show consistently goes over time it's because you poorly organized it.

A scripted tv show could easily end on time, Dave.

Not knowing when a scripted, 2 hour show will end is a concept I didn’t know could be conjured up. Dave actually took to heart when Jerry Lawler used to say during matches for video games, “This match could go on for 60 seconds or 60 minutes.” 😂😂

I literally haven’t missed a UFC card in at least 5 years. They NEVER go over. They’re usually far UNDER because of fights ending quickly and they have to use video and commentary to fill the time. Dave is a dingbat.

I know im late, but why does Dave bring up MMA? Its a fixed number of rounds. The event would go short, not run long.

I've listened to this a handful of times and it just continues to slay me with each subsequent listen.
