I’m a 40 year old dude who has been a lifelong fan of professional wrestling. I also have a wife, kid, a job, a house, and plenty of other things that demand my time. I haven’t watched NJPW in nearly 20 years. I was eager to see Tanahashi and Okada. Imagine my disappointment when I was presented with what we got over the past several weeks. Jericho and Moxley involved in everything. The NJPW guys just looked like any shlub from MLW. Maybe they’re old now, maybe their style didn’t work well with the AEW guys, I don’t know. What I do know is that I didn’t enjoy any of this. AEW programming seems like chaos. It’s like someone has been describing Michael Jordan to me, but then they showed me footage of Washington Wizards MJ, instead of Bulls MJ

@@mikeawesome9212 it’s not all terrible, a lot of it is, but not all of it. Punk is fine, Danielson is a ring wizard, and I like MJF so much I bought one of his t shirts when he was doing the “We deserve better” angle. I don’t care for the Bucks or Jungle Friends, or most of the indyrific gimmicks. It’s strange how they just throw completely green talent out for matches on Wednesday nights when they have 3214 trained wrestlers on the roster but it makes for some fun viewing occasionally. I only watched about 4 episodes of Rampage before I quit on that and I’ve never seen an AEW PPV, probably never will. I want AEW to be successful, I want to see the 2nd coming of “the Monday night wars” in some form or fashion. I’m becoming less and less enthusiastic about that prospect.

@@12ozmouse99 it will never be that way again. Not because wrestling won't be entertaining, but because they won't be fighting for the main stream audiences attention. Ppl tuned into the attitude era to hear catch phrases and catch a glimpse of side boob. Not to watch wrestling.

  • @12ozmouse99

@@drewski103 that’s not true. Well at least in the sense that a bit of both weren’t going on at the same time. To be clear, I understand “the attitude era” is gone and isn’t coming back. Nor would I want it back, it wouldn’t fit. I was only referencing the competition of the “Monday night wars”, and Tony Kahn has the money to make that happen. A modernized version would require that AEW have a competing subscription service, a competing promotional department, a competing video game to reach that oh so important teen demo, a real women’s division, and booking that follows logic. The attitude era has nothing to do with the reason that AEW won’t compete with WWE. Tony Kahn has everything to do with it.

@@12ozmouse99 even if they went head to head, it would only matter to the old school. Live shows don't have to be watched live anymore to be successful. I want that dynamic too, I wish choosing one or the other actually meant something anymore but it's all just personal preference now. Tony isn't in control of the woman's division or the game division, those both fall onto Omegas platter. And since he isn't wrestling and the woman's booking has been up and down lately, I'm thinking the game will be a hit at least. Or I'm hoping it will be a hit

For some reason, I can't respect/concede an alternative opinion solely based on a comment on a KZread video, so I'd be grateful if you could direct me to any credible content that says this really was AEW best, and best selling PPV ever. I don't care how many subscribers ANYONE has: there are small Japanese children blowing up balloons & such like and they have 7.2 million subscribers. That big number means fuck all, and I wouldn't seek these childrens' opinion because they have 7.2 million subscribers. Do you see what I'm saying? Thing is, I'm a huge Will Ospreay fan. And have always had plenty of time for Jay White, too - ever since I saw the two of them headbutt each other into oblivion on ROH TV. AEW TV made both of these guys look like idiots. this show was painful. nothing they did really convinced me that the PPV would be interesting. i hate the fact that Danielson had to start off by dropping hints about the surprise for the PPV. fortunately, the surprise paid off with Claudio but given how vague the description of the person was, it could have been anyone. i mean, there was a rumor going around where Johnny Gargano was the person because of how he was scheduled for an event in Chicago. I know Corny would've gone ballistic in one direction but that could have been polarizing (although most likely the AEW crowd would have mb8'd with cream soda for that announcement). i really don't understand why it's so hard to actually announce the person that will be showing up so that they can help get the fans excited? maybe it could've popped a little more of a rating if Claudio appeared next to Danielson and said hello or something. but i guess because of Malakai and Punk's surprise success, Tony thinks he's stumbled onto some lame formula that works. i'm going to skip the rest of the show until the main event because i decided to go back and check out other Tanahashi matches. I found one with AJ Styles vs Tanahashi back in 2006 for TNA. Tanahashi was 29 at the time and you had a pretty nice peak at a guy who was selected to be the future for NJPW. Everything that AEW did wrong with Tanahashi here in this match TNA did right. Mike Tenay did a great job explaining Tanahashi, showing his significance, why NJPW were very high on him, his athletic background. In short, he sold the guy. The match was good because highlighted what he could do without showing off everything against an equally capable AJ Styles. I left the match thinking, yes I can see why NJPW would see a future in this guy. Fast forward to the present. You had an extremely sloppy match with guys just doing random things. No selling, no drama, just a big mess. With Styles vs Tanahashi, Shannon Moore interfered with AJ picking up the win after Tanahashi got clocked. But it was a tainted victory that AJ didn't want and apologized. The match didn't last long but it was a match where you would want to see more just because of the tainted finish and knowing that AJ didn't pull out all the stops. This match did nothing. Just people goofing off, you have the biggest star from NJPW, a legend, being shackled by bad booking and creative. Worse yet he doesn't show anything except that we get lame jaw jacking from Moxley and Tanahashi rather than something physical that would make one want to see the match. And back in the day, I used to consider AJ a spot monkey but looking back at that match, I thought it was far better than anything that AEW has done except for the Danielson - Page and Punk - MJF stuff because it had the fundamentals of a good match and a reasonable story thrown in. And here's the thing for me that kills me about AEW. I do think they have very good and capable talent. When they have the right creative behind them and the right people involved, they can pull some really good stuff off. But the booking is atrocious, the matches are atrocious because they have zero fundamentals nor good drama and people just fuck off every single match. But who's telling them to do that? I want to go back to the horrible Darby promo. It was just all over the place. It felt like he had a cue card behind a camera because he would go from line to line or point to point without leading us anywhere. There was no cohesion to that promo and he simply name dropped to name drop (because we have to be reminded of everything). Even if the delivery/execution was awful, the content could've been stripped down enough to tell us why we needed to see this match. I remember Corny jizzing over Cena's return promo. To be frank, Cena's promo wasn't even that good because it was elementary in basic story telling that you learn from grade school. Who, what, where, why, when and maybe how. He even spelled those things out as though being a 1st grade teacher to a bunch of C- students. The summary for what AEW is to me is that it's basically people who had watched pro-wrestling and picking and choosing what they liked rather than understanding the framework that makes it work. Guys like Adam Page can be defensive about their beliefs for whatever reason but that stubborn headed attitude makes the business look bad since they refuse to listen why their stuff looks and sounds bad. It's like how people learn how to code these days where they do these code boot camps or copy and paste from bad examples for a few years with contract jobs or whatever then claim they deserve a senior position. Then when you give them an assignment where they have to solve a tough problem, they buckle because they don't have the tools to understand how to figure it out. I wish Tony Khan just steps back and take the role of the CFO and/or COO (operations guy) and let someone with the right experience put the wrestling framework to be the head of their product/creative side. Tony has to get out of his own way.

This show was a mess. Everything Jericho touches turns black and dies. Shafir is getting tv matches due to the friendships she has backstage. Storm basically sold everything like death to keep Shafir from trying more stuff (The way she did against Rosa), because Shafir is stiff, jerky and sloppy. The women only get their usual 9:30 match. This is the second week in a row where the only thing I walk away from this show enjoying is Christian's segment. I'm tired of Cole. I'm getting tired of Page's thin skinned hyper-sensitivity. I'm sorry, but video game wrestling matches where people barely sell and if they do it's for all of three seconds just to go into another spot they shouldn't even be able to do right after the damage they took, is not enjoyable to me. I know there's an audience for it, but I watch with a friend and that's the main thing that keeps me bothering.

I remember when they announced a women's war games i was thinking "there's no way they can put Jessamyn and Moreena on Shayna's team". I really thought they were going to because those 3 and one other kept attacking all the girls. I forget who the fourth girl was. Then they ended up doing it so that Shayna picked her team members and she did not pick Jess or Moreena because again they both sucked in the ring. Shayna's team ended up being her, Io Shirai, Bianca Belair and Kay Lee Ray. So yeah now Moreena is in AEW and she still ain't any good which is bananas since her husband is Roderick Strong. You would think he could teach her some stuff since he is so good but I guess some people just don't have it.

There are two problems with that, 1) it's primarily a small group of basketball players who dress like that & not all athletes. As a matter of fact, many sports mandate that athletes need to arrive at the stadium/arena in a suit & tie attire. 2) Basketball players who do dress like that (e.g. James harden & Russell Westbrook) are often made fun of because of the way they dress. That's not a good thing for a wrestler your trying to get over as a serious &/or threatening person.

If we want to talk fighters, I think it's fair to say those guys mostly dress up for official media days, but outside of that it's mostly civies. Also, being honest, have you ever been intimidated by a guy in a suit who wasn't in the mafia? Most wrestlers look awkward in them anyway. AEW has way to many major flaws to key in on this, imo.
