This! That man has so much heart. It touched me and made me appreciate and respect Rey so much more than I already did. That’s the way we should be. When we fuck up and hurt those we love, it’s so important to take accountability and do/be better. Lead with love and respect. Rey’s documentary made me smile and cry, several times over. I love that he’s not too proud to keep it real.

That quote with Dom saying “When it comes to my Mount Rushmore he’s all 4 heads with a different mask” Was perfect 💯🐐

Remember Bischoff saying he wanted to unmask all the lucha guys because he could market them better. Idiot. Yet when Rey had his first meeting with Vince in 02, they talked about masks, action figures tshirts everything, and promised Rey they'd never ask him to take the mask off

I think I read somewhere that Rey was one of the top merch sellers in the WWE during his heyday because of all the masks they’d sell. But then again Bischoff has always been pretty up front at how bad WCW always was about merchandising. I can understand not being up to WWF/Es level on the merch side but it’s forever insane to me how JCP and WCW really never made a big push into it and thinking how much money as a company had to have been left on the table over the years by not making a push into it. Even companies like TNA and AEW have been good on getting merch revenue streams out there.

When rey admitted to going rehab for pills was the first time I was truly floored by something in wresteling. He’s always been a superhero I’m glad he got out of it

Yes, even though I was about 5 or 6 and not remembering everything from back then, that's one of the things I really loved about the Ruthless Aggression era, it seemed that everyone had a chance to be the main guy. And with me being of Mexican descent, I am very biased towards Rey but he's my favorite wrestler of all time due to his charisma, and his personality. Even when he wasn't in WWE, I don't think he complained once about his treatment.

Oscar Gutierrez truly brought a comic book superhero to life with Rey Mysterio. He didn’t look like your average wrestling(5’8 to 6’0 or 6’5) but, he had to heart and talent and work ethic to make it in the business. He has truly paid his dues and earned his status as a Legend of the Ring. The part of the documentary that got to me was hearing he became homeless during his time in AAA and had to ask his then girlfriend and parents for money. Oscar has truly come a long way.

It just will never stop fascinating me that he’s been doing this for 33 years.

Rey Mysterio Jr is the greatest cruiserweight of all time. He and Psicosis tore it up in ECW then WCW. Rey showed he could hang with the big boys. His match with Eddie Guerrero at Halloween Havoc 1997 is a classic and still holds up today.

@@thesleepingpusheen2650 Yeah that's the thing. However! There are ways around it. You can have a "symbol" instead of a likeness. Yes, WWE has IP of Undertaker, Stone Cold and Mysterio, but they don't have IP on a black hat, a Zamboni, or a mask. So if they are able to break these characters down to one symbolic element, they can have sketches like that and make them commercially available.

Pcicosiss Doesnt get enough love dammit !!!! His matches with Rey all over the world helped get Rey and Lucha itself over globally !

Man I agree. Rey Mysterio Jr is just different. Nobody does it like him. He did give these little guys hope and honestly, it's too many of them now. Jim mentioned those Dean Malenko matches, man those were awesome too, when I saw them wrestle I was dialed in on WCW, F WWE for the moment I want to see this. I remember the ECW matches too. Also Godfather's pizza was good back then.

I can't wait to see this because while WWE was busy with their major superstars, and barely gave Rey the best of treatments, the man always kept it real AF. All his Spiderman costumes, the one night stand appareance where he put on his old ecw gimmick, the immense respect for the biz and fans...Nobody in 20 years will remember Reigns, Brock, Seth, McIntyre...over the one and only Mysterio.

These artworks are awesome, but as soon as you start selling the art, then whomever has their likeness depicted needs to be in on it as well. The obvious way around it - whether you want to make Tshirts, calenders, desktop wallpapers and yes, NFTs -is to just feature Corny and Brian in these and then simply allude to a certain wrestler. Like Corny wearing Kane's mask, or Undertaker's hat, or drive a big Zamboni.

I love this particular art of Jim because it looks like as if Jim was in Earthbound or the Mother series. And Rey is the greatest masked wrestler ever. Him and Eddie brought a new generation of fans to wrestling with those Smackdown ratings in 2004.

Yeah you can definitely make the case for Rey being the best masked wrestler ever. Obviously Mick Foley and Kane have their hats in the ring as well, and they definitely forged their own path. I suppose in Mexico, we have to mention Mil Mascaras and obviously the granddaddy of them all, El Santo. But in terms of sheer volume of people that knows him with the mask, Rey Mysterio takes it.

If you created a timeline of professional wrestlers who have revolutionized the sport, Rey is definitely part of this timeline. If it wasn't for him, wrestlers under 6' tall wouldn't have a job now. He opened doors. I've been a fan of his since AAA. I'll be a fan forever.

That's a bit of a stretch. He definitely helped redefine, but there were plenty of people well below 6 feet before he was even in the business. Tully Blanchard was maybe 5'9", Ivan Putski was like 5'6", Dynamite Kid & Tiger Mask were nowhere near 6 feet and a whole list of other guys from the territory days. I get what you're saying, but c'mon, I like Rey, he's the easiest guy to cheer for, but if you're going to make your statement, I'd counter with he's also the reason guys like Marco Stunt got an opportunity as opposed to "wrestlers under 6' wouldn't have a job now", and honestly many of those guys SHOULDN'T have jobs.

@@Clubber-Slang well Jim cornette explained exactly the difference between Marco stunt and Rey Mysterio and you know that there's a night and day difference. But the difference between Rey Mysterio and the rest of those guys that you mentioned that were under six feet tall was the fact that race stood out because he brought an entirely different style of professional wrestling to the National spotlight in ECW and in WCW while people like Tully Blanchard and Ivan putski as great as they were, did not revolutionize a lot of what you see today. Rey did moves that nobody dared to do or didn't even know what to call on the announcing table. Dynamite Kid is a standout but he was not even allowed to show his full potential of what he learned in Japan against tiger mask in the WWF because we all know that when you get there to the WWF or WWE, they limit your moveset for the fear of injury. As far as I'm concerned Mysterio revolutionized this sport so that people under six feet tall did have jobs. Just like how I can equally say that someone like too cold Scorpio introduced a high-flying style that nobody saw in America until he introduced a lot of it

Benoit and Guerrero had just as much or more to do with that honestly. My introduction to Rey was the ECW Psichosis matches and they were in fact awesome. My introduction to 2 Cold was as JYDs mystery partner in WCW in like 1990, but as someone who watched just as much World Class, Georgia and Florida Championship, AWA, Continental, Mid South/UWF as WWF as a kid, I've seen a ton of people come through doing things before they became mainstream, but the saying goes it's not who does it 1st, it's who does it best and even then it's really who does it in front of the most people. WWF made it out as no-one had slammed Andre before Mania 3, when Hogan himself had done it several times over the years. But for a lot of people, especially kids, and this is when forget about the internet, not everyone even had cable hooked up yet, it was their 1st exposure to such things. So, short version, Rey did help re-define wrestling, I just disagree to your extent that without him guys like Gargano wouldn't have a job.

@@Clubber-Slang Well sir, I appreciate the civil discourse however, an example I can illustrate is, before 2 Cold introduced the 450 in WCW, no one saw it in mainstream American pro wrestling. So for people who use that hold whether it be finisher or as a part of their move set, they owe 2 Cold a debt of gratitude. I have watched Rey since AAA and the moves he did, no one on America has seen on a mainstream basis. He didn't just bring moves, he brought over and entire style. When he debuted at the greatest American Bash in 96. The only other person prior to him doing anything innovative overseas bringing it to America was Jushin thunder liger. So Rey did much more than most people give him credit for. Benoit war not a high flyer. Guerrero came after Rey to WCW. Ecw doesn't count because 2 reasons: 1. Even though they introduced lucha libre and all these other things that were considered pro wrestling they are best known for their hardcore style. 2. ECW at the time was a small local independent promotion that just so happens to get limited television exposure. All I'm trying to say is that Mysterio is old a lot of gratitude for what he did because he became the first successful smaller guy who made it and he showed a style of wrestling that Americans have never seen before and on top of that it was only kept in Mexico until he became the breakout star.

it still made no logical sense for WCW to take off all the luchador's masks. but it's a testament to the culture and to Rey Mysterio that it never affected his popularity when he came to WWE. if there was ever a person in real life that defined a mask not by its identity but it's accomplishments, that would be Rey

man the artist nails it! This is how I remember Rey, he was always a superhero and a big part of my teen years.

I love Rey Mysterio. Been a huge mark for him ever since the cruiserweight division in WCW. His matches with Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Ultimo, Psychosis, etc. All classic stuff. The cruiserweight division is still my favorite anything in wrestling. To this very day I'm still chasing that dragon.

What can ya say about Rey…. Innovator , icon , never EVER heard anyone ever say anything bad about him ….did shit in the ring that just defied gravity and did shit that nobody had ever EVER did before. I’m so glad I lived in the time to have seen him work. Just a amazing talent. For decades !!!

I hate when people compare these new guys to Rey because he literally is a once in a lifetime talent. Nothing he does makes you question your disbelief, he uses his speed and agility better than any one I’ve ever seen and I always believed he could logically beat ANYONE regardless of size because of that💯 True legend and icon

Rey is a top 10 guy of all time because there will never be anyone to replicate him in the entire history of pro wrestling. He and Foley are the only two guys I can think of that you would never be able to replicate. Probably Brock, Angle, and Taker too.

Mysterious is legitimately one of the best ever

I have so much more respect for Rey after watching this. Been a fan of his since he first appeared in ECW. His match with Psicosis at Gangsta's Paradise was the first ECW match I ever saw and it blew me away. No question he is a first ballot hall of famer. The best high flyer of all time. Also.....Konnan. Nothing but respect for him for everything he did to push for Rey to be the best. He saw it from day 1 and he deserves so much thanks for showing their talents to the world.

Rey is a generational talent🙌🏽Nobody can wrestle his style better than him at his level. His longevity and influence speak for itself🐐🇲🇽

This might be asking for too much, but can an animator get a gig and collaborate with these artists for these videos? I’m not talking about a full on cartoon, just a looped, GIF-like animation. For example, an animation of Janela setting his own boot on fire, while wearing it, would’ve been hilarious.

Rey really did set a trend for these smaller wrestlers in the USA to have success. Because he was very small 5ft2 and 150lbs but his style of working and the way he would sell and get off offense against bigger wrestlers made him stand out and it wasnt unbelievable. Never the strongest talker and I think that let him down especially in terms of him being the top champion more also vince knew he was a asset for them but he never ever warmed on him being there champion and when he did decide to go with him he nixed it very quickly. but he was incredibly popular and younger fans who were about 6 or 7 years old like me when rey first turned up to wwe really took to him and he was one of my favourites because of the incredibly cool things he could do also vince letting him keep his mask and let him wear it again because he knew how marketable they would be where as wcw took it off. And him and Eddie just had amazing chemistry in the ring it was Ying and yang also the other crusierweights he wrestled like ultimo dragon juventued and pycosis them matches were sometimes the highlight of nitros weekly. Rey is a wrestling legend and in pop culture hes been well known for many years especially in the Latin community. Shit even tyson fury the world heavyweight champion weighed into a fight wearing a rey mysterio mask

Rey is a top 10 wrestler alltime. Him and Undertaker were both so revolutionary for different reasons. I remember watching him in 97 he was a “human highlight reel “that was a cool nickname back in the day.

Rey is A LOT like how Thunderosa is now. When she was with WOW she was known as Serpentine.

That Eddie Rey feud was awesome smh. Yes having a ladder match for a kid is corny but the promos and build up were excellent.

The Perro Aguayo injury happened not from the 619, but from the concrete bumps he took directly before them that cracked his vertebrae. When Perro hit the ropes to set for Rey and bounced his head, it took his neck the other way and caused the breaks to splinter into the spinal cord.

Yup. I knew from watching the tape when the news broke that Rey Mysterio wasn't responsible for his death. They tell us not to try this at home for a reason.

It’s amazing to me that he’s still wrestling. He was one of my original favorites when I became a wrestling fan in 2003. And it’s nuts to think that even at that time he had been wrestling professionally for 14 years already. It’s even more crazy to consider that by now he’s been a pro for 33 years, but more so been around that long with his style which I imagine has been immensely painful.

Maybe it's because I was young at the time but Eddie yelling "im your papi!" Was one of the most shocking things I've seen as a young fan

I'm surprised people aren't as vocal about Travis being gone as much as they did Last. Travis' artwork is what in part made this channel. Went from Brian's channel to Jim's own channel for the shows recap vids. The clips were good but if you already heard the podcast you don't need to hear it again. But early on the thumbnails attracted so many people, new listeners attracted to his funny and creative artwork, to check out the show. Travis gave it a flair and also a brief summary of the subject of the vid in one quick pic. It was truly a stroke of genius melding the 2 for a, originally, good but nondescript recap channel for a podcast. I know Konnan's crew were asking if Travis would do the thumbs on K100. I know a couple of other podcasts and a few lower level/new/unknowns also wanted to use Travis but he stood loyal to Jim. I hope he is studying and bettering himself and it isn't about money or any other issue. I think Travis' absence is just as glaring, perhaps more, as its the first thing people see of the vids/show especially to non fans/people just going through vids on KZread who don't know the show. Now it looks like good art but nothing special. Modern images that say nothing to anyone just cartoon pics. Travis' stuff told a bit of a story, gave a little mystery to entice someone to check out the video. But also a friendly inviting image that made you interested. This new stuff is good but doesn't do anything to make someone want to check out what it is all about. I would think as many people as complained about Last's absence should feel the same if not more over Travis' absence.

The Giant Killer Gimmick was Epic

Perro didn’t hit the ropes, that didn’t cause the neck injury. Ray clearly states," he was going to get in the 619 position but for some reason, he bumped & went out to the floor. During that bump you can clearly see the back of Perry’s neck hit the ring. That impact broke his neck but he seemed ok & apparently got back in the ring for the 619. He then had the heart attack & died.

Guerrero vs Mysterio at Halloween Havoc 97 is a MUST WATCH for any wrestling fan.

I enjoyed watching this biography. It got pretty heavy when they began to focus on Eddie Guerrero though. Such a sad moment!

Without the mask, Rey wasn't very Mysterio.

I supplied a ton of TJ footage from 95-2005 which they didn't use.. Some really great stuff

I'm amazed that out of all the people who came over from WCW during the WWE buyout--who knew that Rey Mysterio would be the ONE who would have the longest career and outlast all the others in WWE? He's like the kid voted least likely to succeed in high school--and then you see him years later, and he's more successful than all the others!

As Nate says, he had youth on his side. But his incredible moveset hot him over and the mask made him a merch monster. Come to think of it, the WCW had some epic careers in WWE. Obviously Eddie would have been a lot longer, if not for his untimely demise. Chris Benoit...yeah, we understand what happened there. But Chris Jericho, Booker T, Eric Bischoff, Chavo Guerrero, Shane Helms all had great careers when they made the jump. And that's not even taking into account that Stone Cold, Undertaker, Big Show were WCW guys before

@@HkFinn83 sure there's a ton of options in NYC, but if we're just talking the quality of your average mom and pop that sells it by the slice then there's good pizza places and bad ones just like anywhere else. I had Lombardi's in NYC which is more traditional style pizza and thought it was great: it's a world class restaurant. Then later I had like a $2 slice of NY style pizza and thought it was mediocre and greasy. It's even worse the further upstate you go. I went to a college like 2 hours from NYC and the NY style pizza up there was very hit or miss.

having moved from the East Coast to the West, I can confirm. that when it comes to pizza, bagels, breakfast, even sandwiches, nothing even comes close to NJ/NYC.

I knew Rey Mysterio jr was special and unique the first time I saw him wrestle in ecw in 97. He was doing things that were breath taking and he could work. He could tell a story in the ring with other wrestlers even with the mask on.

Yall gotta check the youtube channel Markyd123. He covered Rey's ECW run. His matches against psicosis were great. That channel is heeeeavily underrated. One of the best wrestling channels out there. He mostly covers short or "irrelevant" runs like Scott Hall on TNA and things like that. Gold channel.

This A&E Biography was great. It was good to hear from Rey’s parents, uncle and wife. I liked it when Angie was talking about how tough her pregnancy with Alliyah and Rey cut her off and told her to be honest and tell the truth about him being a dick towards her. That was real.

Lmao. I Love Jim's insight on the wrestling business. But I also tune in because his colorful vocabulary of word play has me dying laughing!

Can we all acknowledge Brian's heat with the bullshit pizza chain, Godfather's pizza..geez😳

This was one of the better ones for sure, to be a fair, Cruiserweights was a WCW term from 96-ish Easy E was there i'm pretty sure he did his part. When WWF/E did them it was Light Heaveyweights, in Japan they use the term Junior Heavyweight.

All Bishoff had to do was look at Rey unmasked in the locker room and he should have been able to tell that it was a bad idea to unmask him. Edit: also, I'm not aware that WCW ever sold replica masks. They could have made a mint on Mysterio, Juventud Guerrera, Psicosis and etc. replica lucha masks.

Wcw making him take his mask off, that still to this day bothers me. Stupid stupid stupid.

I get Rey not wanting to unmask but to flatout say no one wanted it; Rey was still very over with the fans and had a good run afterwards, Juveteud Gurerra got really over after WCW unmasked him too.

I remember back when I booked, the promoter derided this guy named Keith Haught after telling me his height and weight. I rattled off a list of guys who were the same height and weight he'd be stupid to reject only for him to tell me they all carried more "gracefully" than he did. This isn't to say anything bad about Haught, having seen him for myself now I still would have used him based on how he wrestled, but rejected him if his appearance was all I had to go on too. Numbers don't lie, but sometimes they don't tell the whole story.

This brings up a good point about Big E. When he ever returns he should never take a 619 just as a precaution.

Mick Foley is the wrestling equivalent of snoop Dogg. It was once dangerous and alluring , then became cartoony and annoying

Rey Mysterious is the ONLY little guy in wrestling who I've seen beat a big guy and make me believe it and not call bullshit

Because unlike today Rey actually wrestled like a small guy fighting a big guy. He would always use the psychology of using his quickness to tire the big guy out.

Speaking to drawing to the area you live in. When I was on the navajo reservation our heroes who would win at our shows were "The Warrior Twins" tag team and "Muttonman" our champion. I don't remember any crazy flips or anything the warrior twins worked alot like LOD, quick beat em up and go. Great stuff!

ECW had financial problems but every major star to ever worked did loved it for creative freedom. Why would Paul tell Men who wrestled each other and have great chemistry what to do??

People always bring up Rey when other small wrestlers get made fun of from indy marks. The issue is Rey wasn't doing power moves to bigger people. I do disagree you can put flip flop on Rey since he was from Lucha. Rey wasn't doing Canadian Destroyers on guys 250 pounds bigger. Lastly Marko stunt is way smaller than Rey.

Yeah those so-called ropes can hurt you so bad so quickly and so easily. Respect that ring or it will take you under. Enzo is lucky to be alive. They just straight up stop that match and didn't even try to keep kayfabe going. I've got that DVD. He knocked himself silly.

The booking of Rey Mysterio during that run as champion was atrocious. At the time Rey was probably the worst booked world champion in history. As Ole would say, "you've moved up the ladder without doing anything" though.

@@MichaelSmith-fq6hz all I remember from that period was constantly being pissed that every match was a big guy holding Rey's body weight and then throwing themselves to give the impression he was "reversing" their moves...... Watching Big Show and Mark Henry pretend they couldn't just swat him away was the worst. Besides a horrible title run Eddie's death also opened up the door for sympathy hiring Vicki and that whole Edge/Vicki cringe shit.

Godfather's Pizza was my go-to in Kansas City, MO; the most delicious pizza I've had and I'm from the NYC/NJ areas. Godfather's Pizza was something else.

In my opinion the guys neck snapped when rey hit him with a shoot dropkick as the guy was looking back at him after botchung the first setup of the 619 . Then they proceeded to do 2 more 619s over top of him as he lay dead. Then to add insult to death konnan gave him the Mexican version of the claw when he was already gone

Well, I still think Dominik can do it. I know it's optimistic. But.. he still has plenty of time to get the number of matches under his belt. And to maybe build up the physique. Not to mention he's been trained by Rey Mysterio. Right now he may not look like much. But I feel the potential is there. And he just needs about ten years to get into his own. If he goes to the gym he might even become a "bigger" wrestler than his dad was. And a different type of wrestler. And with Rey's training he could potentially do both. All I'm saying is: he just started. And there is still time.

My favourite wrestler, the guy that got me into wrestling. Just love him!

My first Rey Mysterio Jr viewing was on ECW in 1994. Konnan vs Sandman in 1995.

I am surprised I didn't get into Lucha when I was a kid since it was on TV in NYC, I think the first time I saw AAA and CMLL was in 99 or 00 on Galavision.
