Thank you so much Jim and Brian. Today would have been my father’s 86th birthday. My father lived in New York in the late 1950s. When as a kid I begged him to take me to wrestling in Orlando, the name of the building (Eddie Graham Sports Stadium) led him to tell me stories about going to matches at Madison Square Garden. He vividly remembered seeing Eddie (and Jerry) Graham but he told me his favorite was Antonino Rocca. To run into this on what would have been his birthday feels a little special!

If memory serves the Eddie Graham Sports Stadium in Orlando was once named The Sportatorium. Meaning that David, Kerry, and Kevin Von Erich; The Fabulous Freebirds; Blackjack Mulligan; and Gary Hart among others appeared in both legendary Pro Wrestling Arenas by that name. More amazingly, there are now darn few Pro Wrestlers or for that matter Fans still around even retired who can remember when Eddie and Jerry Graham squared off against Antonino Rocca at MSG. Especially with the recent departures of Harley Race and Pat Patterson and Pampero Firpo.😔B.W.

I am kinda surprised too that not many know of him. I remember buying this WWE Encyclopedia a few years ago, where there is information about any Wrestler that ever wrestled in the WWE until that point (including a few pages here and there about WCW, ECW, AWA and other territories) and Antoino Rocca actually had a whole page just for himself. Normally, these big pages where for those true top stars in wrestling. So, even the WWE apparently knows that Rocca was a big deal. :P

Rocca was a former circus acrobat in Argentina before coming to the US and entering pro wrestling, extremely agile in his prime, he was a revolutionary in his time, one of the first to fly around the ring and use the ropes, before Rocca most wrestlers stayed planted on their feet and barely touched the ring ropes. Rocca's style could be described as proto-lucha libre, very quick and agile and unconventional, he was also credited as the man who created the dropkick, truthfully his dropkick wasn't all that great but he was the first to use it in front of a major audience so when he did it people went nuts. It was said Lou Thesz hated Rocca, the old Shooter vs Performer thing, but few could argue his impact in wrestling history. Outside wrestling Rocca was one of the first wrestlers to get into music, putting out a record in 1963 titled In This Corner, mostly Argentinian Salsa, and appeared on the cover of the Superman No. 155 (August 1962) wrestling Superman.

Really interested in hearing your thoughts on STING showing up on AEW! I'm confused on how to feel. Sting is one of my favorites growing up. I can not blame him for taking Kahn's money, which i am sure he got plenty of. However disappointed to see him as part of that product.

I remember Rocca as a guy, barefoot, with gigantic thighs, who used to jump up, wrap his legs around a guy’s head, and somersault him to the canvas.

I wrestled Rocca for a nine month angle through 57-58 before his run at MSG. The crowd loved him. But accidentally ruined the match so he refused to ever work with me again. Sadly, it was on celluloid film and is no longer with us. A good man, a cheapskate but a very good hand. (I had diarrhea the last match we had and i got dookie all over him. We finished the match to his credit though. I still see him from time to time and he is akways cordial. I shouldn't of have those enchiladas!!!!

On the Documentary Andre Larger Than Life another wrestler said people who tried to keep up with Andre went to the hospital. Just the size of Andre tells you nobody could hang with him.
