Thanks for the review, awesome piece. Looks well made. I’m a fan of the Bowie. I grew up on a Case V44 Raider back in the 60’-70’s. That thing was our house go to knife for my brother and I. The things we put that knife through, and it held up fine.

🙂 I've got an old (maybe 30-40 years) Bowie made in Sollingen. I got it from an uncle (he bought it when he was young) and it's not as big as this one, has a strangely short but heavy handle and the blade is maybe 3.5mm thick and has a hollow grind. I have used it extensively for something the inventors would have never imagined i guess. Last time i used it, i took it with me to work and in a quiet moment i cut some huge packaging into small pieces. (i had 12 big Servers delivered, and the carboard and the foam inside the packaging would otherwise just take up way too much space. The Blade is easily large enough for that, and thanks to the hollow grind it was better at cutting that foam than thicker knives and those with full flat grind or convex. The foam squishes a bit and sticks to flat surfaces better or follows the curve on convex edges while being split apart. On that occasion i took a whole bag of "cutting implements" with me for that fun. An Esse 6, Glock FM78, Fällkniven S1, Jäkaripuuko (14cm blade length) and a Kabar USMC. Those blades with a non smooth change between bevel and flat of the blade did better with the foam. As did those with no agressive blade coating. (The coating of the FM78 wears off way easier than that of the ESEE, but it also doesn't make the foam stick as much. With the carboard there was little difference. But i did notice that if there's no guard on the knife (out of these, the FM78 , the Kabar and the Bowie have a guard) it's better to wear gloves to not get cut or skin "sanded off" on the back of the thumb and index finger over time. (it was a lot of cardboard ... ;-) )

All I've read is that it was a 12 inch full tang with an integral finger guard, single piece manufactured stag handle with mosaic pins and red liners, clip point, composite blade with 3v spine and M390 edge, compound grind throughout the length for different purposes. The sheath was leather with a kydex core. Had multiple mounting options. I don't know if that's accurate. Just what folks have said.

They are from a company in Spain from a company called "Muela" I bought said knife set back in 1991, from a knife shop in West Yellowstone, Montana. The big knife measures 12.5 inches long, and is marked "ALCE" with the outline of a stags head in the C. I bought this combo because it had the big knife and a small companion knife, all using the same sheath. And thats all I know. I'm hoping you can help me?

G'day Aaron, the ol' 119 has always been the Bowie style representative in my inventory, ...... albeit on a much smaller scale ; ) However, I reckon Joker has done it again, I do dig N695 and 90, especially for the dough and this one is something I could use quite happily as a primary blade on the trail. I'm trying not to get caught up by the looks of it, ........ but yeah gotta admit, ..... I do fancy it !!! Bit of a shame the antler scales ............ have shrunk ; ) and I'd prefer a lower ride on the belt loop. Btw; the sheath on my Bravo 1.5 has a cutout to capture the same sort of retention strap. I've heard some say its not lined up well enough to be effective, but mine has been working properly as designed. All in all, I'm see'n a new grail knife on the horizon. Cheers Duke. P.S. also btw; is that a Jose Sabater design ?

It likely looked like an 18th century French butcher knife, which was a coffin handle, guard-less knife with somewhat of a leaf-shaped blade; a far cry from how it was portrayed in 20th century media, which used mid-late 19th century designs (the notorious guard+clip point), like the Wade&Butcher bowie. The original bowie probably looked something like the Bark River Rogue bowie.

Hi there, A good looking knife to be sure. However - I don't see anything there that my Cold Steel Trail Master (San Mai III version) doesn't offer. In particular, I have found that those types of handles become very slippery when wet (I have owned one). Although I rather favour a sabre grind, I have come to really like my full convex ground Trail Master. The Trail Master has come a very long way over the decades and still features on almost every Top Five Large Knives list. The formula is just so good that it has shown very few changes over this period, other than some grind choices, and use of different steels (eg San Mai III). I discount the sheath issue because I tend to have custom sheaths made for my favourite knives. [ Mine was made by Rob Evans in Wales, UK, and shipped directly to me.] Even after quite heavy usage over a period, the edge is still just as sharp and certainly not needing any more than a light stropping. Therefore sharpening "in the field" is never an issue. Cheers mate!

I know its not the subject of this video but since it was featured, i emailed Giant Mouse if they would ever make the GMF4 in different steel variations and i was told they would bring it up at the next team meeting. I'd urge everyone else to email Giant Mouse as well to ask if they will ever make a GMF4 in Elmax or 3V or Vanadis 4E in the future.

Beautiful knife but I'll keep my Cold Steel Trail Master. Because of the knife's size I don't hang it from my belt so I don't mind it's nylon sheath. My Trail Master is on display in my living room when not in use.

It’d be great if they improved the handle and sheaths on the TM. At that price too, a knife like that deserves better handle/sheath materials than the ones they use for their budget lines.

The anesthetics of Bowie knives just don't appeal to me. That said, Joker seems to have given their version really good blade geometry which is far more important than how a knife looks. I'm kind of surprised you didn't throw an Essee Junglas into the comparison mix. Like you, still digging my Lionsteel M7. I like how you mix it up with your reviews and give us a look at a broad spectrum of knives. That keeps it interesting.

The Joker Bowie is a good-looking knife but for the price I'd take a Bear and Sons 9" Bowie in Sanvik 12C27M. It won't have the same edge retention but would be twice as tough and more stainless. Also, it's a US made blade, half the price, that looks damn good.

How does it compare to the trailmaster?

  • @certamen832

    @certamen832

The currently made trailmasters have either better blade geometry (convex) and same steel (san mai iii, very similar), or same blade geometry but better steel (3v). The handles and sheaths on the trailmasters are crappy plastic/nylon; and they’re more expensive depending on where you live.

N695 is 440C, it is brittle. 4116 is basically 12C27M, it is tougher than CPM-3V(but with lower strength and abrasion resistance). The issue with many 4116 is that they get cheap HT, for reference of a well done 4116, think of buck 420HC. 4116 is better for a large hard-use knife than 440C

  • @michaelwaldeck7081

A lot of people would argue against this. I have owned a joker 4116 and it was ok. I’ve been testing my knives on pine kindling and 440c is competitive against the other steels. However one dc53 is great and the other dc53 is crap. Heat treatment here or one is not dc53…. Possible. I think the Bowie knife is over priced and there are better options for that price.

  • @Laurarium

@@michaelwaldeck7081 It is material fact that 440C is much loweer in toughness than 12C27M.

I mean, I would actually prefer a carbon steel. I like the way they come out after years of use, especially since those patinated blades have an insane amount of stain resistance. Sure it takes a few years to get to that point but damn does it look pretty

There's just something that draws the eye to a Bowie knife, but only if it's attached to a board or hanging on a wall. Using one is awkward and unwieldy compared to other fixed blade designs.
