Gen Alphas, before the rise of ai voices, people used to do impressions of the Presidents voices and make music videos out of them, primarily during elections. And most of them weren’t technically videos, they were what we call, Flash Animations, basically an entire animation running in Adobe flash player. Political satire was very different back then, no gaming videos, or anything involving Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and only a bit of stuff involving Obama. Instead, we had these kinds of videos.

I was just thinking the same thing. In reality, when we were living in 2005, we definitely didn’t necessarily think of them as simple times, but I remember life being a hell of a lot more tolerable back then as compared today. Everything is so damn inflammatory and disastrous right now. Again, mid-2000s were not without problems, but much better than today.

When this was suggested to me on the front page today, I had never heard of JibJab before. Update: I gave their other Year in Review videos a watch, and this one is more decent than their later ones.

I've spent the last 17 years trying to figure out what this darned tune is called, and I don't want anyone else to be bothered as much or for as long as I was. It's "Turkey in the Straw." The song's been around since the 1820s, with various lyrics.

A lot of it is due to us being strong militarily and economically. Though the end of ww2 is what really put us in this position since we were the only power, aside from the ussr, that came out better than we started. Then we got paranoid about communism taking over the world so we set out trying to curb it. Whether we were right or wrong to do this is up for debate, but now we're trying to clean up the mess the cold war left with terrorism, N. Korea, Iran, etc. Imo if we were to step down as "world police" it'd be much worse. The balance of power would dramatically shift towards China and Russia and they arent exactly known for having the best of intentions, the US isn't either, but I'd say we're still slightly better

Its amazing that I was only 3 years old when all this was happening. Yet it all seems so surreal like something that happened in the distant past

Its been 15 years folks! A decade and a half has passed, where does the time go?

You know, you may hate or love George W Bush, but we can agree on one thing. He tried his best. He gave it all he had. He may have ended his last term badly, yet he tried. I admire his as a person and a president for that.

Yeah... not the shenanigans around Iraq though. The administration manipulated information, downplayed certain sources and exaggerated others to get the public on side for an ultimately unjustified invasion which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. Pretty hard to forgive the administration for that one, and ultimately, the buck stops at the president's desk.

In its day, this was a parody criticism of Bush adm. After 5 years, it looks like a true heart tribute to a man that had to face such a troubled time. "Cause every problem in the world lands right here on my desk...It's hard to rule the free world but I'm doing the best I can..." Some of us miss you, Mr. President. Because change...we can't.

No year is objectively "good" or "bad." It depends a lot on each individual's life experiences. Besides, all these havoc we worry about from year-to-year seems to be forgotten a few years later

Watching this now and the sentiment that some things change and others stay the same never fails.

Starts off as 'Auld Lang Syne' and turns into 'Turkey in the Straw'

The contrast between this and "second term" is striking. Its sad when this cartoon saw the housing bubble for what is was but when it did pop everyone looked around like, "Wha happened?"

@@air2091 It was my great-grandmother, but people all over the world were sadden with John Paul II passing away. There was a huge international reaction to his death. A few months back, I came across Peter Jennings' final broadcast (the night before John Paul II died) and he noted that 50% of the world never knew another pope in order to give people an idea of how long John Paul II was the pope. I was among that 50%.

We're all hoping 2021 brings brighter days. This year has sucked. It seems like everyone is going through something regardless if it has any connections with the coronavirus or the protests. I lost my uncle the day after Easter and lost my longtime next door neighbor the day after my birthday.
