Jiang Zemin lectures Hong Kong reporters at press conference in 2000
In this rare footage that has gone viral in the wake of his death, former Chinese president Jiang Zemin criticises Hong Kong journalists at a press conference in 2000 after he heard a question that he did not like.
Jiang was pressed on whether Beijing had endorsed a second term for Hong Kong's chief executive Tung Chee-hwa.

I watched his interview with Mike Wallace, and that guy was obviously way worse with his defamatory comments and questions, so it doesn't make sense that Jiang is praising how much better he was as a journalist for these younger people to learn from.

To understand the context of Jiang's behavior and reaction in this clip, the Hong Kong Press, is a pro-democracy press that believes in transparency and openly criticizes political leaders without hesitation, something Jiang and the Communist Leaders are certainly not used to, and thus he was very caught off guard by the reporter's questions. But his attitude comes off as patriarchal, and very stereotypically confucian, in that elder men are right, everyone else is wrong. The people of Hong Kong do not, have not, and will never share the same ideological beliefs as the Communist Party of China. They are a unique people to their unique culture and special view of the world that will never conform to that of the Communist Party.

This clip whent completly over your head, as he said to simple, naive. the reported asked a dumb trick question, she was trying toget him to say imperially appointing" (using language from Imperial China) the (elected) Chief Executive of HK. Instead of just asking the logical question , that is if he suported him or not. And Jiang , correctly , critizided this low form of journalism, just take a look around you and its pretty clear this low brow journalism is all we have today. Also the people of hong kong did not exist as diferent 150 years ago, they arent unique or have any unique world view, the were deliberatly prepared by the british to hate china. Take a look at Macau across the bay, its integrating just fine because the Portuguese didnt impose their culture there just mixed it with the locals.

not really diverse opinions lol if you listened to his response the journalist was asking low-quality leading questions and trying to get him to say he was "imperially appointing" (using language from Imperial China) the (elected) Chief Executive of HK... sure an autocrat but admittedly he probably had good reason to be distraught and I'd say he probs handled it better than Trump or the like would've (straight up calling people bad journalists, etc.)
