Problem is Xi passed a new law which granted him almost absolute power. He is gonna be in power for a very long time just like Putin, almost until the end of his life. Very sad. The people of China desperately wanted a new leader who might be just like XI predecessor, someone more open minded. China has a such a good potential, it’s crazy how large part of the population lives in poverty.

I was living in HK during President Hu’s tenure and I’ll say that he never forced HK into whatever it is right now. I always have respect for him. It’s quite a shock for me to see what has become of him. He looks like he aged 20 years in the past 5 years

Just like there may be some similarities between the concepts of "saving face" and "guanxi" between Chinese and other cultures, nevertheless, they are pivotal concepts in that particular culture. Yes, power relations have always existed among humans but Hu wasn't exactly clubbed over the head; he was treated as though he had no status and the public should be made aware that he was shown to be discarded as though his presence was beyond meaningless. This is fairly mild as far as The Purge goes, but it's very specific power play in a country that has its own power plays stretching back thousands of years to the Warring States period and Qin Shihuang. Not everyone would choose to display their contempt for a previous ruler in quite this way. Just saying.

Well western media was the one who shot the footage, they could NOT have controlled what they did with it. At least not fast enough to prevent it from going viral. I don't think this is a factor, more like they planned for it to happen.

The open minded faction you are talking about are the more liberal minded elements of the CCP, who also have strong inclinations towards the US. Xi is purging the ranks of the pro US elements and establishing a goverment for a ramp up in the confrontation with America. Xi represents the more nationalistic elements of the CCP who are wanting to step up their game in the international arena beginning with Taiwan. The US has never seen anything as what is starting to come its way.

I always remembered Hu Jintao with jet black (probably dyed) hair and glasses. He looked different here - didn't recognize him at first. Of course, it is 10 years since he was President.

There is a saying in Chinese called "kill the chicken to warn the monkey (殺雞儆猴)", which means punish one person as a warning to others. Hu is generally considered as a "dove" in China, (especially on the Taiwan issue) , so now you should know the Xi's message to the world.

Thanks thats interesting. If the message is "going to be tougher on taiwan issue" well good luck with that. Didn't fear him before and never will. In modern warfare it's near to impossible to invade another country and win. Ukraine had fairly small amount of time to prepare for Russia. Taiwan on the other hand has been preparing for years.

Which is something that went missing in bbc's reporting of this event. Also, Xi announced within the same meeting that it is necessary to build up the military faster and to speed up Taiwan reunification. He wouldn't have been there to begin with if he was so sick. The fact that none even looked up at him when he was being escorted out proves nothing was wrong with him. They knew what was going on ahead of time.
