Jetstar Airlines | Tokyo to Osaka | $90 Roundtrip | Is it worth it?

I flew on Jetstar Airlines from Tokyo to Osaka roundtrip for $90. Including train travel from Namba Station to Kansai Airport and bus travel from Narita Airport to Shibuya, I show you whether it's worth it to take the flight between Osaka and Tokyo or if it is better to take the Bullet Train aka Shinkansen instead.

This video just highlighted why the Shinkansen is so expensive compared to flying and is still worth it. The minimum flight distance for me would have to be at least 5 hours by Shinkansen. Anything closer than that, Shinkansen all the way.

So glad finding your video. I am going in and out from Kansai airport (Osaka). I plan going to Tokyo first for 5 days, and rest of my holidays, I will spend in Osaka. I am glad finding this video, because I am considering fly to Tokyo directly using domestic flight from Osaka after I arrive at KIX. Because I worry if I using JR rail pass, I (and my kids) can't get place to sit for 2.5 hours (or has separate seat with my kids) at JR since I just have regular JR pass one, not green car.

Very helpful video Paolo! I am debating b/w train vs. plane, from Tokyo to Osaka one-way, and has been leaning toward flying for budget reason. Looks like the problem may be where airports are located, and fortunately there are multiple airports. So instead of flying Tokyo Narita to Osaka Kansai, would you recommend Tokyo Haneda to Osaka Itami? The former though 3x cheaper than bullet train takes very long travel time, while the latter is 2x cheaper but should take less time. Have you tried flying b/w HND to ITM? Hope to get your insights.

Yay RailPass! Once you do a few shinkansen trips it’s all free travel. Did the train from Shin Okubo to Osaka to KIX for the flight home. Travelling by train and Shinkansen was great even with wife+2 kids and a bunch of suitcases. The 3 yr old travelled free. Best thing was all the food and shopping on the way home and the wide Shinkansen seats totally beat airplane narrow seats and luggage hassles. Train all the way! Oh...but red eye flight home to HNL. loooong day 😅

Had you used time as the main metric, you probably should have looked at going from ITM to HND. Thinking about it, for both Osaka airports, you either have 1 long train (KIX) or transfer twice (ITM) to get to Namba (or even Umeda/(shin)Osaka) - both will cost around 40 minutes

on my trip i stuck with planes since trains are new to me. so in that sense it was less stressful, but next time i will try the trains. the planes are more prone to delays and it feels like there's a lot of time just waiting in the airport and the plane whether you are departing or exiting. at least with the train option i'm moving around which as a tourist lets me see more of the city. Regardless, great video.

The travel time between Narita Airport and Shibuya Station via the Keisei Skyliner and JR Yamanote Line with a transfer at Nippori Station is approximately 1 hour 23 minutes versus the approximately 2 hours 10 minutes that it took to get between Narita Airport and Shibuya Station via the bus and Tokyo Subway. It would have only taken you 5 hours 50 minutes instead of 6 hours 35 minutes if you had taken the Keisei Skyliner from Narita Airport to Nippori Station and the JR Yamanote Line from Nippori Station to Shibuya Station in the counterclockwise direction.

とてもおもしろいビデオです。The half-Filipino that I am will always opt for a buffer time; the half-Japanese will optimize time to close to exact. I prefer the former. As for traveling Tokyo-Osaka-Tokyo, which I have done countless times, I really prefer taking the shinkansen. With sufficient buffer time, the shinkansen is less stressful. No much (if any) security checks at train stations compared to the airport. Besides, the 2.5 hours inside the shinkansen is more comfortable than the cramped space inside the plane. I can do more work, and can be more relaxed. My two-cents worth. ご苦労様でした.

I've considered doing Tokyo-Osaka with the Shinkansen during my holiday last year. Without the JR Pass, the shinkansen was a relatively expensive option. But then after a quick search online for airfares, the obvious choice was clearly flying. There are a lot of other things that might go into consideration for other people: timings, comfort, connections, want to experience the Shinkansen ride which is beautiful. But on a budget, yeah, sometimes flights are even cheaper than a night coach fare.
