Water well Technician here... the reason you were short cycling that jet pump with the check valve is because the pump itself needs back pressure to the pressure switch from the tank to keep the switch in the open or closed position depending on the requirements of the system. It also leads me to believe there is a small amount of air inside the pump itself still or pipe work.. especially if it would continue to short cycle being isolated behind valves.. air can compress and water will not..

I'm having the same issues. I installed a check valve where his was, in between the pressure tank and the pump. So I should just remove the check valve? Should I put it somewhere else in my plumbing or just leave it out? I have the same pump and a 20 gallon pressure tank.

Hey man you saved me so much work with this video. I am Abel Barnes of Barnes family homestead in Tawas City Michigan. My water pump fried last night so I shot up to tractor supply and grabbed a new one before they closed. Got it all hooked up and was pumping just fine till it hit shut off pressure and started cycling. Mind you this was at 2:30 in the morning and boy did I feel defeated. After an hour of research on you tube and other sites I came across your video. I also had a cv between the pressure tank and pump. I'm a God fearing man and something set right in my spirit about you and your video. So today I removed the cv and replaced it with a coupler for ease of disassembly in the future. Just got done waiting for everything to set up and sure enough it is fixed. Made so much sense to me that the check valve wouldn't allow the tank pressure to keep the pressure switch held once it closed to stop back pressure. Thank you so much!! Your video has been a literal God send!! Bless you!!

One thing I just learned about and just replaced on my pump was the pressure switch from a standard to an M4 which is a low pressure cut off. They look essentially the same except their is a little metal bar that sticks out. When you prime the pump you have to hold this switch down until the PSI exceeds 10 I think, then it will hold its own. If the PSI ever drops below 10 it will cut off and wont turn back on until you hold the lever again. I bought it because my pump is only used for the landscape and 3 weeks ago it ran dry and ran so long that it melted all of the PVC parts attached and warped all the non metal parts inside. They are check insurance I think the one I got was $32

The middle cv was not allowing enough pressure to keep the cv on the left closed all the way. The water would leak back in to the holding tank causing the pump to come back on. My two cents👍

well that kind of check valve has a spring inside it to keep it closed. It only opens when the pressure on the inflow side or the suction on the outflow side has a pressure differential of somewhere between 1 and 5 PSI. So if the pressure is equal it will normall be closed. The pressure has to overcome the power of the spring. That being said one thing I thought about it that since that check valve is upside down (I know they can be vertical or horizontal but I dont think the vertical and be upside down). The weight of the water above it might have been enough to hold it open. Along with the middle check valve the back pressure from the tank was prevented from getting to the 1st check valve. So it's possible the weight of the water held open the first check valve just enough and allowed water to slowly flow backwards at such a slow rate that is did not cause the check valve to actually close. By removing the middle one the pressure tank was now free to apply anough pressure backwards to overcome the weight of the water before the 1st check valve. Conversly I think if you ran a loop up, through a check valve, then down to the pump that might have also fixed the issue, as there would then no longer be the weight of the water pressure down on the check valve inlet side.

Problem is that you can't have a check valve between the pump and the pressure tank . It gives the pressure switch false reading . When the check valve cuts off it tells the the pressure switch that no pressure so it turns on and the moment the check valve opens up and the pressure switch reads the pressure tanks pressure it cuts off . It will keep doing that till you remove the check valve from the middle .

It's due to where the pressure switch is and the pressure tank. You can't have a check valve in between as the pipe won't keep constant pressure, especially at that short of distance. If your pressure switch was after the check valve you'd be ok. I have a similar system with the check valve in-between pump and tank but the pressure switch is attached to the tank. The pressure between the pump and the check valve is often 0 in-between cycles. After the pressure tank, the pressure tank is pushing the water through the check valve. Look at in ground well pump systems for examples of this setup. And I've found plumbers are not always "well" trained..... (pun intended) and you need someone who works on wells.

This is my take on your problem… The pressure switch is on your pump not at the tank tee. So because the switch is dependant on the system pressure. The check valve in question was preventing the pump switch from doing its job because there was no possible back pressure from the pressure tank to allow it to monitor pressure properly. This affecting cut in /cut out pressures The best way to prove my theory is to turn off that valve you put in the check valves place. Your pump will cycle on and off again. Viola! Problem explained.

You can't compress water, but you can compress air. When your water is pressurised, it's actually a rubber balloon in your water tank that has compressed air in it which pushes against the water to pressurise it. You can't have check valve between the pump and the water tank.

Thanks for the video I ran into the same issue with the same set up with the backflow valve. The well technician had the answer it's the back flow pressure that kept the pump from short cycling. The pump switch stop cycling after i removed the backflow valve. Don't put a back flow valve between the Tank and pump!!!

I'm a late comer to this video. And this is a long winded reply. A number of commenter said similar things in different ways so my input may be restating some of what has already been said. I think you would've seen different results if your pressure switch had been located on the p-tank tee rather than on the pump, mainly because of the difference in water volume between the 2 locations. And here's why. Cvs act to seperate various "chambers" in a flow system. They're designed to keep the pressure of a downstream chamber from overwhelming and backflowing in to an upstream chamber. Cvs are actuated by pressure differential. Higher upstream pressure opens the valve, higher downstream pressure closes the valve. The spring and/or weight of the cv gate creates an intentional imbalance to close the valve when pressure on both side of the valve are equal, thus preventing backflow. Upstream pressure has to be high enough to overcome residual downstream pressure plus the pressure required to open the valve. For example, lets say your pressure tank has 50psi and your checkvalve requires 5psi to open. Your pump has to produce more than 55psi to even begin to create flow. If the pressure switch on your pump is set to cut off at 60psi, the pressure tank's reaction to new inflow could be enough to close the cv, which causes a sudden increase in pressure in the chamber where the pressure switch is located. The slim margin between pressure switch cut off and pressure required to create flow, combined with the low volume of the pressure switch's chamber triggers the short cycling sequence. By removing the cv between the p-tank and pump, you've combined the water volume of the p-tank with the water in the pump's chamber, where the pressure switch is located, so no more ping pong effect between the two.

The first check valve is fine, so is the last , the middle check valve was the problem for sure, it takes pressure to push open the valve, as soon as the pump makes pressure to open it , it is met with the pressure after the valve and spikes the pump pressure backwards to the pump, as soon as this is equalised the valve shuts, the pump will then try to bring pressure back up opening the valve again, again two different pressures meeting and trying to work against each other back and forth, the drop from the pump is when its met with higher pressure from the tank pushing back on it, once equalised the pump will bring the tank back up to pressure ready for it to repeat over and over, its all just a balance of pressures either side of the check valve

Thanks for the post - once I moved the check valve to the suction line everything was solved. I am presuming this works because the pressure from the pump cycling off against the elastic bladder of the pressure tank causes an auto-triggering scenario. The balloon retracting fluctuates the pressure sensor back to the switch, which triggers the pump to send more water and over and over it goes. Once the check valve is behind the pump, the pressure fluctuation is dampened, eliminating the auto-triggering. The plumbers also told me to find a leak. Thanks again!

The pump has a low pressure inlet side and a high pressure outlet side. By having a check valve on both sides, you are essentially are locking the high pressure in the outlet side. The internals of the pump are not perfectly sealed and over a short time, the high pressure would leak through to the low side and equalize the pressure in the high side and low side, dropping the high side pressure enough to cause the pressure switch to kick the pump on. This is not caused by a leaking check valve, just equalizing the pressure from the high side to the low side.

When the pump is on even though it seems like it's full of water it's really not. As soon as you turn it off a little bit of water can go back into the pump. Because you have such a short piece of pipe there's no buffer for that to happen. So it's going to keep short cycling. Once you open it up to the pressurized tank now you have a great buffer zone for that to happen and not be an issue.

The system only requires 1 check valve. The check should be put before the tank and after the pump to stop back pressure. The way you explained it was soon as both check vlaves shut your system ie the pipe work between the pump and tank because check vales do not create a very tight seal the pressure in your pipe work will reduce another words it would slowly drain back into your well. So by just having a check valve at your tank before your pressure switch, you find it works perfectly.

A check valve after the pump will keep the pump from seeing the pressure in the tank, and if the check valve before the pump is the slightest bit leaky, the pump would see its pressure draining away quickly and turning on, then immediately stopping because the tank is already full.

The only checkfile needed on that system is the one immediately after the well or water source. It would be there to protect the water source from contamination or back flow. Everything after that would just be ball valves that could be shut off for servicing. Those pumps turn on when water flow is detected. But they require Back pressure at the same time. I mean the check valve right after the pump eliminated that. And the pump would start short cycling. By removing the check valve the pressure tank Is giving the pump back pressure. The check valve on the main line should be removed and replaced with a ball valve so you have an accurate reading. And if the pump starts short cycling you will know there is a leak in the main line or at the house.

My pressure system was identical to yours. I had two check valves same as your system. One check valve before the pump and one check valve after the pump and before the pressure tank. My pump would turn off when it reached 50 psi and then after few minutes the pressure would drop and turn the pump on for 1 or 2 seconds then then turn the pump off. I removed the check valve located betweem the pump and the pressure tank and the cyclying on off stopped. I am guessing the location of the pressure switch (located with the pump) it part of the problem. If the switch was located beyond the second check valve instead of between them it would not give a false reading. In other words, the switch needs to measure the pressure at the tank and not the pump. However, i cannot explain why the pressure at the pump would be different with or without a check valve after the pump.

The pump control switch should be on the manifold on the tank outlet, not on the pump side of your system. The pressure between the pump inlet check valve and the outlet check valve will drop due to pressure loss through the pump inlet/suction check valve. With the pump control switch mounted on the pressure tank outlet (where it should be) would have allowed for your three check valves and proper pump management.

Imagining the system, I would compare the action going on to the scavenging that occurs most-pronounced within a 2-cycle engine while running. The scavenging causes air to move into the combustion chamber from the intake side, while both intake and exhaust ports are exposed to the same air stream at the same time, and it does not blow exhaust backwards into the intake side. In the engine model, the air leaving the combustion chamber first through the exhaust port has velocity it gains when leaving due to the initial pressure. A flow of mass, be it air or water, also has kinetic inertia while moving. When the electrical energy in the pump motor is cut, the flow has to expend its kinetic energy into the system before coming to a rest. The flow continues into the reservoir before stopping. If the one-way valve is ahead of the motor, the scavenging effect places the pump on the low-pressure side of the energy flow after the water inertia comes to a rest. The "reflected" pressure wave hits the one-way valve, the valve closes, ahead of the valve is pressure, behind the valve is a moment of vacuum (or let's call it simply a lower state of energy rather than reaching vacuum), and as the entire flow comes to a halt the rear one-way valve then also closes, and what you are left with is some value of pressure not entirely influenced by holding-tank pressure but by intake flow and motor inertia. So you're left with the pump being in a trapped region of pressure that is lower than the holding tank. When the one-way is placed behind the pump only, the pump remains in a region which is not cut off from the holding tank, so when the pump motor is cut the reflected pressure wave travels back past the pump, hits the one-way behind the pump, the valve closes and the pump remains in the region where full-pressure exists, and the pump continues to see that region of pressure. Now you can hopefully try to explain this to plumbers. :)

The check valve between the pump and pressure tank won't allow your pressure switch know when to kick on because the low water pressure is not dropping before that check valve. The one after the pressure tank just keeps your system from draining when you open your system for repair. Make sense?

I think the water has to push the check valvues springs open. Some of the pressue is being used to keep the springs open, Also when I had a 5 micron filter before the motor, mine cycled as well. My setup was one check value and filters after the pressure tank. I use a sand filter to filter the water a bit before the motor and to keep the pressure consistent.

Having check valves orientated vertically isn't the problem, but it is if they're upside down, i.e. normal flow direction is downwards and reverse flow would be upwards. Unless the valve clapper is spring loaded shut, gravity will hold it open for small flow rates. A colleague engineer of mine used to say, "where possible, design things to use Gravity; it's cheap and reliable!" Gravity is working against your first check valve.

Hummm. Interesting! Dynamic Pump Pressure? My theory. It looks like while the pump is running the pump output pressure (apparent pressure) is active and when the pump is in a resting state the pressure drops to true pressure? By taking the check valve out of the equation the pressure tank keeps the pressure at apparent pressure? have you ever noticed when the pump turns off the pressure gauge drops a couple pounds? (It would be interesting to see what the pressure drop was with the check valve in the line. just curious.)

Looks like you have a check vlv leaking by. You need a gauge in all of three sections to really see what’s happening. Also you want to work with the pressure switch in small adjustments sounds like it’s set too high and you should have a low pressure adjustment. I only have one check vlv in my system and that’s just so the water can’t go back down the well. If you have a local pump supply like Essco that works with water wells they will help(hopefully). They were the ones that help me set up my system.

I did the same thing. If you think about it, building pressure to correct amount at the pressure tank builds it the whole way to the pump while the valve is open, once pump shuts off, your valve closes, and all the water behind the check valve is suddenly lower than the side the tank is on. So it kicks on, valve opens, pump is at cut off pressure, valve closes, pump back on. This all happens rapidly. Can't put the check valve between pump and pressure tank.

The pressure in your system is maintained by the compressed air in the tank. Air is much more compressible than the water. The middle cv isolated your pressure switch on the pump from the air bladder (pressure maintainer).

Check valves require a pressure differential to work. When the pressure is higher on the supply side it will allow flow, when the pressure is higher on the check side,(when you turn the pump off)it will not allow flow. If you have multiple check valves in line, - lets say 10 of ‘em from a pump to a water hose - if you open the water hose they will all allow flow. Once you close the hose, you have created a change in pressure differential - but only on the last check valve in line. Check valves are not like ball valves, they are not an on or off, if the pressure differential becomes equal on both sides it WILL allow flow (a leak) in the wrong direction…. You should also check into a company called “cycle stop valves” i just installed one myself on my well system.

The check valve restricts the back pressure from the bladder, therefore you don't have the proper signal to keep the switch open. But, when the pump cycles on, the check valve opens and all the pressures are now equal.
