    @@raysalmon6566 St AronRa has not mastered the art of bullshit, like yours, but he may be suffering the lingering smell on his boots from his theist days. The god virus certainly damages the brain, as you are our star witness. AronRa has recovered from that affliction and developed immunity to that disgusting disease, and is providing inoculations like this video. Top marks go to you as you are indeed the master of the text GishGallop - SalmonSpuriousSplice, (slimy like oily fish fillets) using you plagiarising stock of other people's words in a database so it saves resorting to thinking. You know, the theist way. It is interesting to see you lurking in these deep waters and out of your depth because theists like Matt Powell have their comments blocked because they are afraid their gullible victims might become informed. Honest practitioners like St AronRa, are not scared of letting you minnows enter these holy waters. Imagine how your JC could empower you to challenge the Saturdayists, Jumping Jehorses Witlesses, Utah Morons, Catholics, Christadelphians, and even the World Wide Church of Dog; they are splintering again. I suggest you swim over to the other X'tians (you have a thousand flavors to choose from) and put them back on track to mend the errors of their evil ways. Maybe you can be the Ninevah talking fish and take loaves to them too. They will welcome your wisdom when you provide them with the reason why your gods of confusion can't get their act together. Your contribution here is a waste of time, except for something amusing to while away the time. You JC sent you on a fool's errand here.

I have gone back and revisited the Bible to make sure. But once you "see" the glaring reality and contradictions, they can't be unseen. If we had a handful of people who honestly believed in a mythology sect and petitioned to have it known they could get similar benefits as regular religions. Although being it is unlikely to see honest worshipping of known mythology they might be slightly more scrutinized than the more recent additions.

    I visited Jerusalem and the Sea of Galilee last year (before the latest round of fighting started). I learned that when the Roman emperor Constantine converted to Christianity in the early 4th century CE, his wife went to see the places where those Gospel stories allegedly took place. However, this was three full centuries after the events allegedly occurred. Her hosts simply showed her what she wished to see, and told her what she wished to hear (she was the Empress of Rome, no less). By this point, there was simply no way of knowing whether these were the actual locations or not. After all, memories can fade after such a great length of time. The Romans kept no known records of all this. During my visit, I saw some of these same locations. It was quite moving to actually see where these events supposedly took place, but our local guide made it clear that there's no historical corroboration to verify the events depicted in the Gospels.

    Jesus as written in the Bible is completely fictional. Every good lie has a kernel of truth to it, so I would guess there was a real person or persons that Paul spun his new religion around. I don't think Paul even needed a real person nor do I belief Paul spun a new religion. I think he interacted with a religious movement that already existed quite some time. The step from a mythical trancedent Jesus to the real person Jesus is not made by Paul but by the Gospel writers who came after him. That's to say if Paul himself was a real person. The more I read about the lower the probability he was a real person gets. All that can be said is that at least 7 epistles had one source. For now I assume the Epistles and the Gospels are the residu of a much intenser and wider theological dialog that went on in those days.

    Could authors have written the gospels without needing an historical kernel? I think examination of the canonical New Testament, Josephus and other related texts points to Yes. Fictional characters have fictional family members. James the “brother”’of Jesus is the strongest indication of historicity, and even that is indeterminate evidence. I think it’s entirely plausible that the Jesus myth is entirely fabricated.

  • @dan4lau

    @dan4lau

    Even more though, fictional characters have *real* family members. Ragnar Lothbrock had several 'sons' who are very definitely reckoned to have been real Norse war leaders, but Ragnar himself is regarded by most scholars as fictional. So... outlandish and unlikely as it might be, it is even possible that James the brother of Jesus was real, but Jesus wasn't. Our supposed two early Anglo-Saxon kings are now reckoned originally to have been gods. So that happens too. Men become gods and gods become men. Quite a few historicists seem to portray the view that Jesus was entirely mythical as a wild and crazy conspiracy theory... I really don't think it is. It's an entirely plausible scenario, and at the moment I think the most likely one.

    when there was a kernel of believe and myth it was enough to spin a historical person from it. It did not need that many generations of people to tell each other about what they believed Jesus had done where and when before someone gathers it all and construct a solid "true" story about it as if it all really happened. just wondering how long it takes before people start claiming Harry Potter really existed. Quite a few fans have already figured out the dates of his life all on their own from a minimum of clues in the books or have made up theories that he is real and the author is a reporter who disguised his lifestory in a fantasy book. Ergo when enough people want to believe a certain figure is real, that figure eventualy becomes real.

    I kind of disagree with Bart about it being the same when trying to show historicity ...that showing that more recent figures like Trump, Elvis, Lincoln, etc.., is the same as showing Jesus was historical. We have videos and/or pics of more modern figures, not so with the older figures. All we really have is what was written or passed down in stories, or artists conceptions of them. Yes, I don't think Bart was claiming we should reach the same conclusions with the same level of confidence about all historical figures ever. Some of the stories are true, some of them aren't, he was just saying the tools for figuring out which is which are always the same. If we have photos of Trump, Elvis, Lincoln etc. then that ticks certain boxes that will never be ticked for ancient historical figures. But there are still tools to help decipher ancient history, or as much as is possible with the obvious limitations.

No resurrection has ever literally happened like the one in the Bible. No one can walk to heaven as heaven is outer space and you can’t walk at escape velocity. Ehrman misses the point completely if he is trying to figure out which parts of the Gospel are historical and what was legend after the fact. This approach ignores the very probable scenario that the entire thing is aa fiction. First question should be is the Gospel in any way historical? Aside from the gospels mentioning some places (although getting the details wildly wrong) that existed and the mention of Pilate, there really is no evidence that anything in the gospels actually happened and much evidence that it is a fictional story. One of the reasons Ehrman comes across as unjustifiably arrogant is that he merely asserts historicity and insults those who disagree with him. If there is evidence Bart, what is it?

    I can tell you haven't spent much time studying any of this. There are a lot of things scholars look at in ancient Christianity, including how and why various Christian tribes (like the Ebionites and the Nazarenes) sprung up so early in 1st century Palestine (at a time when it would've been harder to make it all up from scratch, given Jesus' contemporaries were still around) and how they were so very Jewish and at odds with the predominant form of Christianity that spread through Rome and Greece. Also, it's not fair to look at the Bible as a book of stories that are either fake or real. Most of the New Testament consists of letters that Paul wrote to his congregations. And although Paul never met Jesus (or claim to), the way he was forced to defend himself to his congregations vis-à-vis the Jewish Christians who (even by Paul's account) knew Jesus first-hand, is pretty good evidence that all the bickering back then was over a real religious leader named Jesus. What I suggest to you is, if you're interested in why most secular scholars believe Jesus of Christianity was a real person, get some books and read them, and check out some lectures too.

There is a gap of almost 200 years between the Book of the Maccabees written and the first Christian writings. For as much as I know nothing much is recorded about what happened in two centuries. It could be likely that various tribes of what we now would call Christian started to form in those two centuries. And with having 10 Jews living in Diaspora since the Maccabees to 1 Jew in Judea, the probability that those various tribes started in the Diaspora is 10 to 1.

    @@kamion53 Jewish Christian tribes were written about by Justin Martyr just a hundred years after Jesus' death, so they were already well established earlier. In any case, my point is that there is no logical reason to think that Jesus (the man) was made up from scratch. Because we know he had devout Jewish followers and a brother who were radically at odds with Paul (in terms of message), and all this noise is happening in the 50s and 60s, shortly after Jesus' death. Imagine seeing a bunch of people arguing about what a guy said and then deducting that the guy never existed. Makes no sense. The simplest explanation is that there was a real Jewish cult leader named Jesus who garnered a small following and then, after being crucified, that following solidified and grew. Paul was clearly trying to rebrand something that was already well established.

  • @kamion53

    @kamion53

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@dookdawg214 Brace yourself this response is long ( and hopefully not too winding) The simplest explanation is that there was a real Jewish cult leader named Jesus is indeed the simplest explanation, but just because it is simple it doesn’t mean it is the only possible explanation. Although one has to give an explanation with making the fewest assumptions possible. This explanation I will call the Jesus Model in contrast to the Diaspora Model. I don’t think I make many assumptions stating there was Messianic movement among the Jews in Diaspora, Jews that settled in the Greek cities in the centuries before Christ. Or maybe better: before Pontius Pilate was governor in Judaea (27-37 AD) as Pilate is the only historically confirmed figure in the story. The Jesus Model indicated a movement in the isolation of Judaea, where the core of the Jews was pretty much against Hellinistic influences. Where in the Diaspora Model we have to take in account that the Jewish communities were exposed to Hellinistic influences and had to adapt to those. A group of immigrants can go different ways, one way is to petrify in believe, the other way is to adapt to the new environment. Both happened and it is easier to maintain the old ways when one is in bigger groups (for instance Alexandria) in most Greek cities the population of Jews was however was small. The change a gosher butcher set up shop is much smaller then in a city like Alexandria. So the Jews in for instance Corinth had to adapt. Over time there were far more Jews living outside Judea then inside Judea, spread over a far larger area those communities stayed relatively small compared to their Greek neighbors. I think it is wrong to make the assumption that after the Maccabees the Jews sat on their hands saying: “So now all we have to do is waiting for the Messiah to come, it may take 200 years, but who is making notes anyway.” The Dead Sea scrolls show that there was a lot of theological activity, at least in Judaea, but also in Alexandria and possible in other Greek cities. Believes change over time, they changed from the pre-Babylonic times to the post-Babylonic times and most likely changed in the Hellinistic times. And changes have much more chance to happen under a population of 10 million then under a population of 1 million (as seemed to have been the number of Jews outside Judaea versus the number of Jews inside Judaea.) The more exposure to other idea’s the more profound the change could have been. What profoundly changed was the transition from a cult that served and saved the community by rites, to a cult that provided personal and eternal saving. Savior cults were all around and at some stage the Messiah (the Anointed who would come to liberate the community) got equated with the Savior of the personal soul). In a later stage the third most common male name got attached to the Messiah or Christ. When and why that happened I don’t know, but it was at least before Paul wrote his first Epistle. Reading the Epistles without the foreknowledge we almost all got from the Gospels, one however would not conclude Paul is referring to a man that actually lived. When teaching Christianity early at school, they start with the juicy stuff from the Gospels and not with the boring letters from Paul, in spite of the fact the Epistle predated the Gospels. Assuming that Paul’s mentioning of Jesus was added later while copying his letters holds no ground, it is written in such way that the receivers of his letters knew exactly what he talking about. Paul writes his letters about two decades after Pilate ruled Judaea, to communities that were larger than one man and a horses head. And there the numbers don’t add up. Would these be communities as a result from an extending group of followers of one man, at that time there would be not enough followers to write to. The extending of a new religion is fairly well documented in the cases of the Mormon church or more recent Moon church. They both promise a Salvation like early Christianity and it showed that the grew with about 40% per decade. There is no reason to assume early Christianity had a different growing rate. When one starts with 12 disciples there would be only 35 Christians to read a letter from Paul. The 3000 converts at Pentecost in Acts 2:41 is just mythical writing, would 3000 the starting number with the same growth rate the number of Christians at the time of Constantine would be 7 times to total population of the Roman Empire. So both assumptions have a very low rare of probability. It is more likely a Christian community addressed by Paul was about 35 persons, being about 5 to 7 households. Yet in Philippians 1:1 Paul addressed bishops and deacons, which implies hierarchy and you don’t have much hierarchy with no numbers. So the number of Christians in the Greek communities must have been higher, how high is difficult to tell, but I don’t think it went beyond 200 people pro community. And that is the estimated number of Christian being 0,0023 % of the population of the Roman Empire at 50 A.D. neatly divided over the 7 communities the authentic Epistles of Paul were send to. With the growing rate of 40 % per decade that number can only be reach when those communities started years before Pilate ruled in Judaea. I cannot say what the number of a community is where the state of knowing each other personally changes to still having a sense of community without knowing the majority of members personally any more, but I am convinced it is larger than a few households. Would have been just a few households, they the community could have settled their internal differences on their own. With a growing congregation settling differences required meditation from outside the group, but by a mediator the whole group can trust. And that was what I think Paul was doing in his Epistles.

I'm not disputing his knowledge, I am questioning his logic. There are times when he appears to be using the bible as his claim that Jesus was real. This is not a good argument as Harry Potter could be claimed to be real in the same sense. I know he cites non-canonical sources as well but is there any reason to believe that these portray a real person? He is quick to shut down any other line of reasoning which is not a good trait in someone who is trying to justify anything with minimal historical evidence. Aron, I always love watching your videos mainly because you are taking a purely scientific approach and questioning everything possible, whilst providing factual evidence of your claims but Dr Ehrman appears to have gone passed the questioning stage and believing his own hype. I'm sure many will disagree with me. Happily I live in a country when free speech is still allowed.

    From the perspective of a historian someone who disnisses"the bible" as a source kinda doesn't get it. The new testament contains multiple sources that don't lose value simply by virtue of their compilation into a religious anthology. As such they need to be examined within the context of the time they were written etc... The question being asked is what are the origins of Christianity. And the one thing that just about all the early sources agree on is that there was a Jesus. Were there no Jesus one would hope to be able to find evidence of multiple stories about a specific apocalyptic prophet converging over time. There is none. We enter the 1st century with no Jesus and by the second half of the century there's a widespread following. The most parsimonious explanation is that he existed. Combine that with the fact that ascribing divine attribute to living people was a thing that was done all the time and it turns out there's nothing special about it

If that is the case and you take them at their word (for debate purposes only because the first question/problem that they throw out is, "Well, what bible are YOU using?" in an attempt to demonstrate that you're not using the "right" bible). The KJV has appendixes that accompany them that explains it (let's face it, not a lot of people speak 17th century English...lol)! These Appendixes are from The Companion Bible, which is a King James Version Bible. The great thing about this KJV bible is that it has a companion column running alongside the Holy Scriptures. This "companion column" is not a commentary on the Scriptures. Instead, this column contains critical, explanatory and suggestive notes. Hope this helps...
