Jesus Christ Superstar - Avondale Theatre Company (2012)
Музыка
Performed by the Avondale Theatre Company the weekend of July 19-21, 2012. This original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice's rock opera was put together in only three weeks of building and rehearsals at Avondale High School in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The band was prerecorded in the three months preceding. The entire cast and crew was made up of current high school students, alumni going all the way back to the class of 1989, younger kids from elementary and middle schools, and two teachers. My primary responsibility was the music arrangement, vocal direction, and video effects editing... I also (reluctantly) played Jesus because I was the only one in the company who was vocally comfortable with the part.
This is dedicated in memory of Rick Shelley (Pontius Pilate) who sadly passed away only five weeks after this performance.

I discovered your Tommy yesterday, and I discovered your Superstar today. You guys do such incredible work! I love the all-ages casting. The kids bring so much life into this show (and Tommy). You had my jaw on the floor when the concerned woman in the crowd began to sing Heaven on their Minds. Brilliant choice! It's nice to see some of the same faces from Tommy in this show too. And you can be as humble as you like, but you're not only a monster on the guitar, but you've got the presence to play a lead, and a very rare voice that's worthy of this part. How do you do shows like this in a community theater company??? Some of the commenters find productions like this and seem upset because it's not quite Broadway, but I hope you take that as praise, because what I think they're saying is that, even as community theater, you guys get close. They wouldn't say those things if they didn't believe you could do it, but don't change a thing, Avondale. Shows like this are personal, not profitable, and I love them! (By next week I'll probably be watching some of your shows that are less than a decade old!) I just noticed the gold records - Tommy 2009, The Radio Hour 1940 - nice touch :-)
Absolutely love this characterization of Judas. Seeing her flinch away from Caiphus at 1:22:20 breaks my heart, it reinforces the idea that she too is a victim. There were so many creative little quirks, I especially liked the mock tabloids projected during the Trial Before Pilate. Those much have taken so long to put together! Thank you for your fresh and innovative take on one of my favorite musicals ^^
I liked the idea of Pilate relaying his dream to a psychiatrist. Sorry to hear about him, he gives a great performance.
I saw the original London West End production and plenty more since. This production can hold its head high amongst them all. Well Done.
I love this version yall did of Could we start again!!! i havent seen many productions give jesus and judas lines and i loved that u did!!!

Thank you! Those added verses come from the 20th anniversary London production. The original recording has a very cheesy "90s pop" sound. It also doesn't attribute the last verse to Judas - that was our interpretation. That version also has the big "Superstar" theme grand finale which we used. I wrote a new vocal arrangement to add all the harmonies.
Wonderful production. Could We Start Again was amazing; simply beautiful. Pilate and Herod's solos were superb!! Loved having a female Judas, as it gives some additional meaning to some lyrics; is there a love triangle between Jesus, Mary and Judas? That's one interpretation. I greatly loved the setting for the piece. ❤❤ God bless!!

Thanks David. We never explicitly present a triangle but it can certainly be interpreted thus, especially since Judas kissed Jesus on the lips rather than the cheek.
This was impressive in so many ways: - creative staging underlying the traditional vocals, in particular the trial - your performance as Jesus is sublime; I’ve been listening to a bunch of different versions of Gethsemane and I’d love to hear you get a chance to do it with professional sound - I thought Judas is a fantastic actor and I loved the casting - giving female performers meaty roles I loved Can We Start Again. Is that an original arrangement? I went from “what the f-“ to “holy crap”.

Thanks so much, Todd! I'm so woefully out of practice these days that I couldn't hit those Gethsemane notes anymore!! As far as "Could We Start Again" --- those extra verses by Jesus and Judas came from the 1992 London 20th Anniversary recording, but that version is REALLY cheesy. I reworked the orchestrations and vocal arrangements on my own. I'm really glad you enjoyed our interpretation!
This is just fabulous!! Thank you so much for posting!
Just watched it an hour ago, and I loved it! The whole thing -- cast, staging, etc. -- just blew me away. I went into it thinking, "Huh. This will be interesting, if nothing else." And it was interesting... and a whole lot more. I especially like the metaphors and creative interpretations that were used -- particularly the decision to portray Jesus as a rock star; a "superstar", if you will.

Using John Lennon to be John the Baptist was absolute genius. I may steal that.

Excellent version!!! I’ve been watching various stagings this week. Yours is a great adaptation. You have great talent and a great voice. I see you were responsible for a lot of stuff for this. Well, you did a fantastic job! I will check out your other videos too. Congrats on a great great job!!!
All I have to say is WOW!! My favorite stage performance!! I would rather watch this than any other. Great job. What happened to the cast? Hopefully I will see them on Broadway!!

Thanks so much, Jason! Not a professional cast, just a bunch of well-coached school alumni!
I'm a JCSS snob, I've seen upwards 50 different productions. This was quite different in interesting places, most of them well done. I still think the version with Tim Minchin, Ben Forster and Mel C is the best.

@@SameerBarua I have a question...how were they going to kill Jesus since the shooting was not intentional of Pilate. I know crucifixion but it didn't seem like he was going to die by crucifixion.
@SameerBarua
4 жыл бұрын
@@calamari.jaksun8914 - the concept for our show was that the Jesus-obsessed fan was going to kill Pilate but that Jesus selflessly sacrifices himself by taking the bullet for Pilate. Instead of a literal crucifixion, it's all a metaphor for the biblical story to fit into our modern rock and roll concept.

Sameer, you rock bro. I love the nods to Pete Townshend you gave here in the intro on guitar. You hit it out of the park here (as you did on Tommy in 2009). Plus the vocal range required here is tough. Well done.
Gosh am I grateful KZread suggested this. Excellent in every way. The staging, the actors and costumes. Innovative and engaging. Marvelous 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Awesome...Jesus looks looks Kevin Prince Boateng, but he sings these difficult parts real good. I like Pilate and Simon Zealotes, but to be honest Judas has a good technic but no feeling. "Then we are decided" is one of my favourite scenes (Quick Caiaphas, go call the roman guard! ... using her mobile phone is great ) Also the "pilate´song" is amazing idea.
Why is Judas wearing a rosary?
Putting Autism Speaks in the lepers scene.....VERY nice...... I assume it was a dig at them?

I never even noticed that until now! No idea if our propmaster meant it as a dig or not.
This is very much modern. In that play Jesus Christ is portrayed as a rockstar, rather than a preacher. Well if I direct the play I will rather stick to the biblical theme rather than modernising it. But that play has full of artistic license.

You might have missed Judas's lyric (sung to Jesus): "If you'd come today/ You would have reached the whole nation/ Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication."
Looks great but can’t get to play. Keeps freezing :o(
It was interesting... But maybe it was "too special" . I feel it have nothing to do with the source material and the reinterpretation does not work, at least for me. But you took the risk and thats a thing.
Judas looks like a girl trying to play a Male Judas.
correct me if I'm wrong but is there something important missing? where is the cross and the crucifixion and where are the 39 whipsticks for which I remember and I have just seen who he was beaten with a whip. next time follow the event

Sameer Barua If humanity is judged on its KZread comments, we’re in trouble. My family and I loved this. We’re a musicals kind of family and have a decent idea what it takes to make something like this show happen. So again, well done, tricky metaphors and all.
They missed the point of the whole opera, changing characters to fit some message not in the original, It was Judas the apostle not Judas the concept
@SameerBarua

This show is not meant to be a literal biblical retelling, it's an avenue to retell the story creatively with different lenses.
No, she's not Judah.....
INTERESTING TRANSGENDER CASTING OF A WOMAN AS JUDAS!
Vocal and intrumental part are okay but this "Jesus" guitar man is ridiculous... I'm aware this is a modern version, however the director should have dressed the actor more adequately and removed the guitar!
The performance has many cool concepts, like Pilate's dream with a therapist, but I could not watch it entirely. It is just too heterosexual for me. Hard to enjoy.
A woman should not play Judas. What's next is a woman playing Jesus? I like traditional casting. When men play Men and women playing women

pretty good instrumentals however the leads, Jesus and Judas were not up the to task to be charitable. Also the sound mixer for this show really did a poor job of balancing the vocals with the music plus leaving such a dry signal throughout didn't do the performers any favors, it accentuated their flaws unfortunately.
