I thinkkkk it could be to do with her artistry score? It was extremely high! Well deserved, she performed fantastically, but you could argue that floor then becomes more about dance than gymnastics.

Because this quad has shifted to emphasize more on dance and artistry. You won't scream for "overscoring" when she scored 14 with a 5.5D routine in Tokyo, only when she upgrades to one of the most difficult routine in this event final.

I think her leaps are the area where she most outshines Jordan and Jade. That straddle full turn perfectly stuck in the corner was great and her ring is fully executed. I would love to see the actual execution deductions. Her last pass landing was low with a big hop back and should have gotten quite a bit taken off.

She only scored 0.166 higher in execution. She had 0.2 difficulty on Jordan. Her floor is specifically designed for this code and has no built in composition artistry deductions. Being an amazing performer isn't the same thing as having a strategically designed routine for this COP. GB have a bug advantage in having Nicole as she composed all their floors and beams strategically. Nobody is doing that for the US. Jordan was excellent but it was an adapted NCAA routine so as good as she can perform and execute, she's going to be at a disadvantage unless USA get someone to live and breathe the artistry deductions. The USA programme let's the girls down in that respect, so that gives GB an advantage. 0.166 in execution isn't ridiculous as Jess had cleaner jumps and gets no artistry deductions more or less. It did seem like a big gap but less so when you take away the difficulty and only looking at 0.166 difference in scoring.

@@hydrosphere8447 hmm very true. When you break it down like that, that makes sense. I definitely don’t disagree with anything you said. I guess it gets a little confusing to people because like you said, Jordan’s routine is a hyped up NCAA routine but she performs it so well and had pretty good execution. It’ll be interesting to see what USA does in these next few years leading up to the Olympics.

  • @hydrosphere8447

@@a.mikhailov1928 definitively. I think the US will come back with more of a focus on the specific code for artistry, rather than just aiming for more artistic routines than previously, but I'd be surprised if they give it the focus GB does. It's also confusing as USA are so good at tumbling specifically and that's always the primary focus they put into routines. The jumps seem lower priority to them and its so much easier to spot issues with the tumbling than it is with leaps and definitely vs the super specific artistry deductions. Anyone with 4 tumbles to reach their difficulty is also at a disadvantage with more tumbles to deduct but also becomes harder to avoid artistry deductions for the fluency of the routine and for starting or finishing too close to acro. There's just less time to get those requirements in as there are deductions if it feels like the dance is just in between the tumbles rather than one big story. I really loved watching Jordan though. I think she was exceptional and such a great sportsman. She's just not set up for success quite as much so on par performances will always put her at a disadvantage for both artistry and difficulty.

As someone with no knowledge of gymnastics, I just asked on a forum how many points can be deducted for artistry under the current scoring guidelines. It's up to 1.2 points off the E score for artistry. That's why Jess won - under the old points system the result would be different, but with artistry being really valued now, Jess winning makes complete sense. Her landings might not have been as good, but she's not losing anything on artistry.

gotta question. when we talk artistry. I get Jessica used more classical dance. Jordan used more hip hop and drumline dance style. Both of them executed their artisty well. So if you are saying the judges deducted Jordan for that then the Judges need to educated themselves on dance and dance style because the younger gymnast are coming and these new dance styles are what they know. So the continued deduction and ignorance of judges for the old guard will have to stop.

@@juha962 It’s Jade and her father who protested I think for her L turn in order for Jade to have 0.100 points more which would put her above Jordan and in the first place at that point. The judges disagreed and in addition noticed in the slow motion that one of her other dance elements should have been downgraded as well. In appeals, execution score can’t change against the gymnast, but D-score can actually change if they find a mistake they hadn’t noticed in real time. So, Jade remained in second place behind Jordan but lost 0.100 points which put her in tie with Rebecca and since both had the same D-score and E-score well they tied in second place. Then Jessica came and pushed them all one place further as she took first place, Jordan 2nd, Jade and Rebecca third

Except artistry has to be personalised, because no two gymnasts move the same way, or two pieces of music are the same. How Jordan dances is different from Jess, Jess from Rebecca etc. I actually think that if more routines used choreography that was considerate of their gymnasts style, it could be amazing. Just think about Rebecca's floor dancing section with flexed feet, it suits her and it's fun to watch. Increasing artistry should improve routines and avoid what's happened in vault where everyone literally does the same thing to try and win because there is no incentive to try and be more creative

I am really pleased with the emphasis on artistry in this cycle. There is already a separate sport of tumbling for gymnasts that don't excel in dance elements but hopefully this will signal a return to high class total performances that have gradually phased out over the last few years apart from occasional exceptions. I think people are starting to understand finally that artistry doesn't mean waving the arms around or facial expressions but complete body engagement including the core as well as a fluid performance where the dance and tumbling are not disconnected elements. Beam and floor were starting to get a bit boring in recent years but hopefully this signals a change. Jordan Chiles was deservedly better than Carey today but even her dance to me is NCAA not elite. I am guessing she also received deductions for lack of leg and core elements in dance. If Saraiva or Andrade had been on top form/present today, they would have beaten Jess as they also have the full package but with higher difficulty.

There is this whole thing called dancing that you can watch if you are most interested in artistry and expression. Having a little bit of deduction for subpar artistry is okay I guess, but having 1.2 potential points of artistry deduction to where it is almost *more* important than the tumbling is a disservice to everyone. Go watch the Tokyo floor finals. Other than Jade (I loved that routine of Jade's, but I'm aware that most people don't), every other routine is beautiful in artistry and expression, they didn't need an absurd code to make that happen. A gorgeous, expressive, charismatic routine like Jordan's should not be getting more artistry dedcutions than Jess Gadarova's! For the record, I love both gymnasts, and my issue is with the code, not the gymnasts.

The problem is artistry is incredibly subjective. To me, Jordan’s choreo displayed just as much artistry. However, the judges panel doesn’t seem to value contemporary dance as they do more classical styles. This to me presents a very clear and significant problem. How can you fairly score routines on artistry when two equally exciting and engaging floor routines are valued completely differently? The sport should be encouraging diversity in artistry if they’re going to be scoring artistry to begin with. It’s honestly troubling to see urban/contemporary choreo like Jordan’s so underscored. It’s not fair.

My two cents. Two of her three tumbling passes she stumbled and were not good. But she ends up with a gold medal? Why is hip hop dance like Jordan did undervalued vs classic ballet moves? There needs to be a conversation about this with judges and gymnastics federations around the world. If they want this to become rhythmic gymnastics 2.0 then they should announce it. Sports like gymnastics and figure skating can risk becoming too subjective when athletes make obvious mistakes and win when other athletes with different styles, body types and cleaner passes lose. Likely people will have the same opinion, and scream for "overscoring" for the rest of the quad lol..... Judges are hammering poor dance elements and artistry, while Jessica performed these dance elements so well not to mention her artistry.

Urazova received a high E score in 2021. She lost on difficulty. She had a 5.3 D score vs. Wong’s 5.7, Melknikova’s 5.6, and Murakami’s 5.8. Gadirova had a 6.0 D score, the highest of the competition. Neither Carey nor Andrade received the 6.1 D score that they received on their previous routines this worlds. Now, I personally think that you could make a case for Urazova deserving an E score at least four tenths higher than Wong’s, but with her D score, the best that she could hope for was bronze. Incidentally, Urazova’s 8.4 E score was 0.2 higher than Gadirova’s 8.2.

People upset at the score, clearly don’t understand how gymnastics judging works under the new Code of Points. It’s not just about ‘steps on landings’, it’s about the artistry requirements, which Jess G excels at compared to other finalists (except Andrade, but she didn’t have a great routine today). 11 fully-qualified FIG judges, who judge elite gymnastics for a living, sat on that panel (none from GB, BTW), including 6 looking at E score alone. Are you seriously suggesting they’re all wrong in their application of the Code, and you’re right?! Give your head a wobble. USA has been using their POWER AND TUMBLING as a way to skate by. Not this code, not today! Murdered. lol I live.

it is simple... GB wanted the gold medal, as Japan last year with Melnikova... Melnikova was robbed with at least 0.3 points least in DV... a shame...

I don’t think this is overscored. She had one of the more difficult routines with two H tumbling passes and the final one with the added connection is quite difficult too, not to mention she didn’t cowboy her legs at all in the double tuck which makes the skill considerably less ugly. Her leaps were executed beautifully and so was her choreography and this CoP has an emphasis on artistry. The only main deductions were her form on the first two tumbles

About the Chiles routine, very charismatic, but... it was more about the charisma than the choreography. Still, the Gadirova routine doesn't deserve such a high score. The biggest controversy here for many is between Gadirova and Chile, but I think Rebeca deserves the gold medal, and it's not because I'm Brazilian. (And i re-watched Rebecca routine, she really don't deserve to win. Sorry for this noise). Maybe Jessica herself, but not with her over-inflated score.

Rebeca got rightfully deducted for falling out of her Memmel and plus her landings were not as solid. So yes, you are saying Rebeca deserved the gold because you're Brazilian. Don't lie to yourself.
