Jesse Lingard + Maya Jama | Talking mental health for Heads Up
Спорт
Watch as Jesse Lingard and Maya Jama sit down for a candid, honest and open conversation on mental health. Manchester United and England midfielder, Jesse talks about the pressure to perform and how a simple conversation felt like a weight lifting when his mum had depression and he had to step up and support his family. TV and radio broadcaster Maya Jama talks through a spiral of events from her youth and how she experiences and manages her anxiety.
Heads Up is a season-long campaign, harnessing the power and influence of football to change the conversation on mental health. Through the Heads Up #SoundOfSupport series, we will keep breaking the silence around mental health - showing that talking about how we feel and what we’re going through is more important than ever - and encouraging everyone everywhere to make their support heard by those who need it.

Ben Hardcastle did you watch the video? He has the responsibility of his sister to look after, his dying mother, growing apart from his teammates like Rashford and more, and struggling with anxiety. I think football comes before video games and all that but he should still try and do the things he enjoys
Lingard looks like a nice guy, hopefully the situation with his family is all good now👍

Depression nearly ruined my life and my family’s life it doesn’t discriminate, doesn’t care who it affects and family members that pick up the pieces and step up it does affect them ! Jesse never once complained , gave out etc... he took the abuse and bullying he was experiencing stepped up for his siblings and mam and just said nothing . I've seen Jesse getting ripped into via social media quite a lot in recent months. I think it's quite unfair on him considering his personal difficulties he's spoke about and potentially more that he may not have publicly. You can never know for sure what a person is going through, something to keep in mind.

lmao he's a professional footballer, who's on £100,000 + per week, it comes with the territory that you will be scrutinised if you do not play well which has been the case for him for over a year, now he's trying to play the mental health card. If he couldn't hack the criticism he should of got himself a normal job. Not sure why people play the pity party for him or any celebs when in reality, if you were struggling and asked them for money they wouldn't care.
Hope all is good and getting better , my son looks up to you as a inspiration , your a fantastic player and I take my hat off to you for talking about this out in the open your the man can’t wait to see you back playing for England with some more dance moves once you’ve scored come on 👍👍👍👍 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴

Being an Arsenal supporter you could say one had a certain dislike towards Jesse Lingard "solely from a footballing rivalry perspective" I must say, as he's bantered my beloved Arsenal FC so many times over the years lol, but in this interview, he came across as a true stand-up guy. But real talk, what I will say is, I obviously don't know him personally but in this interview, we get to see/hear him open up about the struggles he's been facing in his private life, which would clearly explain his dip in form on the pitch in recent times. There is this argument that many, aim towards the rich & famous, which is "what does he/she have to be stressed, depressed or have anxiety about" "they've got all that money & live lavish lives" and that may indeed be the case for most celebs, in that "they do have lots of money & live fanciful lives" but that does not take away from the fact that they are human & are also susceptible to the same pressures & challenges that life may bring your way, such as tragedy, loss, grief, drug/alcohol addiction of a loved one or in some cases, the celebrity themself? We have also to mention the stigma attached to "mental health" especially from a "man's" perspective, as men are "not meant to feel any emotion or show weakness, of any sort, which forces us to bottle things up & it's this suppressed emotion that can lead to all sorts if unaddressed!!! So I've had my own issues with mental health & As a man of West African descent, God forbid you to show weakness or emotion as this is simply "not done" in my culture... But with that said though, attitudes are definitely changing with the generational change & there is a lot more awareness about mental health these days "more than there ever before" which is definitely a positive thing. It is also great that those in the public eye, like "Jesse & Maya" along with the many other celebs who have been coming out to vocalise their own struggles recently, so more power to that movement for sure!!! And like Maya, I'm also one for the positivity quotes, just like the "John Lennon" one she quoted at the end. “We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
Here after he scored two against Leicester
As a United fan I feel guilty now slagging Jesse off for not performing, he's genuinely a lovely lad who is going through alot, just because he's a pro footballer we expect him to perform regardless, hope him and his family are in a better place now, he's a United lad through and through, he needs to start a fresh career maybe in another club so he can play first team football, no matter what he does I wish him the best.

All due respect to Jesse Lingard. Good guy. Mental health is a very important issue but it can never be used to justify lacklustre performances at the highest level for which you are paid weekly what many people want be getting in their lifetime. Shit happens with everyone. Still can't imagine as an attacking midfielder going a full calendar year without scoring a single PL goal.Nothing against Lingard but I want Manchester United to compete at the highest level for which they need high quality players.Hope United finally sells him.
