I knew it was his own choice to leave! As a hardcore Halstead fan who watched PD since day 1, I'm very happy that he made this decision! I wanted him to be a lead on his own show for yrs now. Because he is too talented to be wasted& sorry but the showrunners and PD writers totally wasted Jay's potential (almost all characters got f up, let's be honest) and have been ruining the show for a long time now. In season 6 when we still had mostly old, original writers, it was clear Jay and Hank were on the trajectory to become closer and that is what should've been! I so wanted to see Jay&Hank working closer as cops, and Halstead becoming more like Hank and becoming Hank's right hand. On a personal level, I wanted them both as surrogate father and son, since it would make perfect sense: Hank lost his son& Jay lost his father, and they both loved Erin, so they actually have many important things in common. Not to mention, the drama of the relationship between Hank&Jay starting from butting heads over methods and Erin in s1, to fully trusting each other and being a family, would be simply the most interesting and fascinating storyline on this show. And watching the early seasons you could actually tell that if Bush didn't leave, this was the original plan - to make the three of them one family one day, and Hank fully supporting Erin and Jay in the end. Also, the exciting possibilities of this dynamic between Hank/Erin/Jay on the job and in private life were endless. Too bad it all got ruined. But the whole tone of the show changed most drastically in season 7 when new writers&producers came fully on board, and the show became darker than ever. Jay mostly lost his great sarcastic sense of humor, there were no more group scenes at Molly's, and no more group interactions in general; also the writers proved they are incapable of writing good romance on the show. Hailey and Jay were great as partners and with their no-consumed platonic love before they romantically got together. After they got together, the writers of course had to write cliche drama for nothing. But the show could still be great if they wrote more mature romantic relationships and better storylines for characters in general, especially Jay, who had great potential. For example, they should've brought back Mouse and talked more abt Jay's army's past, not in just one episode. And again, more group interactions as in the old times. The wonderful balance that this show once had, between lighter scenes/humor and darker criminal cases, was simply lost from season 7 on. And it's a shame because PD was the best when it was balanced. The best seasons will always be 1-6, plus the Infection crossover at the start of season 7, after that, it all went downhill. Characters weren't acting like themselves, didn't evolve, or often even reversed, and the writers mostly separated them during later seasons, making this stupid one-character arc per episode thing, that completely ruined the family vibe within the Unit. Not involving the whole group on some level in each episode like in the past, was a very bad change. Anyway, for all these reasons, I stopped watching PD, but mainly because Jesse left altho the irony is I'm not mad he left, exactly for these same reasons. His potential was simply wasted and I know we will see him soon on some other great show, hopefully as the lead as well. Jesse said in this article interview with Variety that he dreams of being on Yellowstone and that would be honestly perfect. But even more perfect would be if Taylor Sheridan create some next great show with Jesse as a lead. Jesse has a perfect talent and looks to be on some cowboy/western show! Make it happen, TV people!

THIS! What I loved from the earlier seasons was that even with the cast being the double as it is now, they all got in, the main story, the patrol officers story, everyone was involved. Now every episode is promoted as “Upton’s episode” “Burgess episode” “Atwater episode” like c’mon!

Halstead is my favorite character from Chicago PD and I love learning more about Jesse.

He will make an exemplary Husband to his celestially designed wife with that triad of optimism, equanimity, and compassion💘. I bet he can compose a libretto and play the piano, he also seems to be an attentive listener and a very learned, studious individual; intellectually knife sharpened, he can accomplish anything he inputs his ambitious, intense focus upon. love this man so much i will support him in whatever he chooses to do any direction he goes in but I will forever miss him as Jay Halstead in Chicago PD he was an iconic character and part of one of the most iconic relationships in all tv history (if you don't agree with me argue with the wall) but only true fans know what really happened but im so glad he got the opportunity to direct and doing something he loves to do Jesse i am forever filled with gratitude of how much you have changed my life i always used to watch you on PD whenever i was having a terrible day or going through a bad time and it cheered me up every time forever a fan of yours and forever a jay halstead fan just wish we had more closure with him and Hailey and Upstead but i forever love you and will forever support you in everything you do in the future i cant wait to see you thrive and be so successful

haha, I remember him in Brady Bunch movies& with the Olsen twins! Jesse is incredibly talented and hot, and I'm so happy he wants to be brave and go after his dreams, be a lead! He said in the written interview he loves Taylor Sheridan and Yellowstone, and honestly, Jesse as a lead in a cowboy/western/crime type of show would be a dream!
