Jesse Knutson: how do you set a steering damper?

home.php#!/da... How do you determine the correct adjustment for a steering damper? It all depends on the use of the bike - city, street, track, race etc!

Hi Dave. I have a 790 Duke and an evo tech radiator guard. When installing the guard evo tech advises to adjust the steering damper (linear type that connects to the fork and chasis) because when turning the steering all the way to the left (full lock) the rod on the steering damper touches the radiator guard. I'm not sure how to adjust the damper as evo tech doesn't explain how to do it. Would you have any idea? Have looked all over the internet but can't find any info or videos especially on the 790 Duke.

No isn’t, you need to buy and install a kit that makes it proper this cause they’re afraid some user will mess with that and kill himself, so the oem isn’t settable to a “hard” level. I had a zx6r ‘11 bought new and did the operation in a ohlins center

I'm going to be going into racing this season after doing two seasons of track days. I'm thinking of picking up an ohlins linear damper for my 09 R6 I just picked up. Do you think getting one is a top priority? It is quite a bumpy track.

  • @catalystreactionsbw

If you feel you need it, then you need to have it otherwise you are letting a distraction creep in. You can set it up on a looser setting to make sure that you are not working to fight the damper on turn in so start all the way off and then add clicks to see when you feel your forearms working. Then back it off a couple of clicks.

@@catalystreactionsbw Thanks for the reply. I'll see how it goes my first weekend and I'll make a decision on what I might need to do for suspension work. I'm a light guy at 115lbs without gear so I'd definitely need to get new springs for my weight front and rear.

@@DTrask be careful on that assumption as ability can often exceed weight so using a zip tie on the forks and shock can show you where you really are verses where you think you need to be. Discovery verses projection - much more fun to discover!

@@catalystreactionsbw I guess I totally overlooked that considering when I was tracking my 750, my front forks were about 2 or 3 cm from bottoming out with the zip tie on and I still had a decent amount of adjustment. I never used a zip tie on the rear though.

@@catalystreactionsbw On my second open practice I was being very light on my handlebars under acceleration on one of the slight right turns where the woops section of the track put my bike into a horrible tank slapper that put me off the track. I managed to keep it up but for the remainder of the day I was very tight on my handlebars to stop it from going into a headshake and I could only accelerate 25% on that section to prevent it from doing it again. I'm certain my rear shock isn't adjusted properly because it's quite rough but I think my front is very close to perfect. I have 3/8 of an inch left of travel before bottoming out and the front feels planted over bumps in the turns. I think the rear is a problem but it's hard to pin point exactly what I'm feeling since I haven't messed with stuff yet. I did have a bit of abnormal tire wear on the rear and it looked like hot tear but that was only towards the end of the second day when track temps were 75F and I was getting quicker. I ended up only being 2 seconds a lap slower on my best lap and 3 seconds slower average than the all the top guys who have raced for years. Overall it was a blast and it just makes me want to sort out my bike to see what I can really accomplish. Too bad you are 30 hours away and the closest I can get is Brainerd International Raceway.

Had my front end trip tree and everything checked up front it all checked out. I make sure to keep my body weight off my hands. I’m taking every precaution to not get into a slapper. I just need to have my damper checked/serviced esc
